A 280-day tolerance-efficacy study with mibolerone for suppression of estrus in the cat

Mibolerone, a synthetic anabolic steroid, prevented estrus in domesticated cats when orally given a daily dose of 50 microng over a 180-day period. Doses of 20 microng daily and 50 microng given once a week failed to prevent estrus. Treatment with the 50-microng dose each day for 6 months had no apparent effects on subsequent estrus, mating, queening, or litter size. Kittens born to queens which had been treated did not have obvious developmental defects. Systemic metabolic changes produced by treatment were detected only in thyroid function, as revealed in dose- and time-related changes in serum cholesterol concentrations, thyroid gland weights, and thyroid histology. Clinical evidence of thyroid dysfunction was not apparent during the 6 months of treatment. Clinical and microscopic evidence of slight masculinization was apparent in cats after 3 months of treatment with 20 or 50 microng per day. Masculinizing changes consisted of thickening of the cervical dermis and clitoral hypertrophy. Behavioral changes were not observed. The apparent mechanism of action of mibolerone in the cat is the suppression of the release of pituitary luteinizing hormone.     

Morphine suppression of ethanol withdrawal in mice

The acute administration of morphine, alcohol or dopamine results in a pronounced suppression of the convulsions produced by alcohol in mice. The suppressive action of morphine on alcohol withdrawal in the mouse apparently is not a product of morphine intoxication, but rather to some other specific interaction between alcohol and morphine in the central nervous system. The conclusion suggest that dopamine may play a significant role as a modulator in convulsions produced during alcohol withdrawal.

The Blalock-Taussig operation: the procedure of choice in the hypoxic infant with tetralogy of Fallot

An experimental model is presented enabling an analysis of the healing process of completely cut and re-sutured free segments of rabbit flexor tendons, kept avascular in a synovial milieu and completely isolated from adhesion formation. Under these conditions the cut tendons heal within a few weeks. It can be shown that this healing process is a result of intrinsic tendon cell activity only.

Diagnosis of death in comatose patients under resuscitation treatment: a critical review of the Harvard report

In this Article, which draws primarily on continental West European views on death and dying, the author contends that the Harvard criteria for irreversible coma (1968) are not reliable for diagnosing death in comatose patients under resuscitation treatment. The Article suggests that use of the Harvard Criteria to diagnose death leaves such patients legally unprotected against surgical assaults such as organ removal and biomedical experiments while they still may be living and capable of perception, possibly including the perception of pain and the spoken word. An alternative to the Harvard Criteria--angiography--is offered, and several additional issues related to the definition and diagnosis of death are discussed. Finally, the author suggests that even prior to death, termination of resuscitation treatment of irreversibly comatose patients, though followed by death, should be lawful.     

Comparison of experimental and theoretical results for high frequency bubble propagation under T-bar tracks

Observational results for bubble motion at high frequencies in field-accessed devices have been reported in the literature. The predictions of a model for bubble propagation under T-bar tracks are compared with these results for a frequency of 100 kHz, initially at midrange values of drive and bias fields. This comparison is helpful in refining certain features of the model so as to bring its assumptions nearer to the physical situation. The matching between predicted and observed results for the variation of bubble position with drive field angle is now much improved. The refined model is then used to calculate results at other values of drive and bias fields for which experimental data is available. The agreement between theory and practice is shown to be quite close except when the bias field is high.
