It is common knowledge that the engineering properties of clays are greatly influenced by the type of pore fluids. However, the impact of the pore fluids on the geotechnical properties of the samples is even more dependent on the type of mineral and interlayer ions. Completely different behaviours could be observed with identical pore fluids but different clay minerals and vice versa. The liquid limit, plastic limit and undrained shear strength were determined for two types of smectites with different interlayer cations, namely Ca and Na-smectite. The pore fluids were varied by using different dielectric constants (ε) and electrolyte concentrations (n0). The results show that the two kinds of soils respond in a similar way but with a different magnitude depending on the ion occupation. 相似文献

Abstract Light travelling in an isotropic medium of refractive index n and incident on a uniaxial crystal whose optic axis is parallel to the surface and to the plane of incidence is reflected without a change of polarization when n = N g = (N o N e)1/2, where N o and N e are the crystal's ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices. This is true for all incident polarization states and at all angles of incidence and can be used to design a new polarization-independent beam splitter. For a positive uniaxial crystal (N e > N o), total internal reflection occurs at and above a critical angle equal to arcsin (N o/N e)1/2, so that the incident light beam is deflected without attenuation or change of polarization. When n = N g the reflectance at normal incidence for unpolarized or circularly polarized incident light is a minimum: R 0min = (Na - Ng)/(Na + Ng), where N a = ½(N o + N e). This suggests a liquid immersion method in which n and R 0min determine N g and N a, hence N o and N e of the crystal. 相似文献

The use of fluorinated quinolones for prophylaxis of infections in neutropenic cancer patients has led to a reduction of infections with gram-negative enteric bacilli, but there is concern about the emergence of antibiotic-resistant entero-bacterial infections and a rise of gram-positive bacteremias. Due to these concerns, in mid-1995 the use of prophylactic norfloxacin was discontinued in our unit. In order to evaluate the impact of this measure on the infectious morbidity in our unit, 91 severe neutropenic episodes in 58 patients with hematologic malignancies who did not receive norfloxacin prophylaxis (NO group) were closely matched to 91 episodes in 60 patients who received norfloxacin prophylaxis (NORFLO group). There were no differences in the incidence of febrile neutropenia, fever of unknown origin or bacteremia during the first febrile episode. There was a trend for a higher rate of coagulase-negative staphylococcal bacteremia in the NORFLO group (5 vs. 11 cases in the NO and NORFLO groups, respectively, p = NS). Enterobacterial bloodstream infections were more frequent in the NO group (13 vs. 2 cases, respectively, p = 0.01), especially Escherichia coli (9 vs. 1 case, respectively, p = 0.01). Twelve of 13 enterobacterial isolates in the NO group were sensitive to the fluoroquinolones vs. 0/2 in the NORFLO group (p = 0.07). We conclude that the abrupt discontinuation of norfloxacin prophylaxis in our ward led to a rapid increase in the rate of fluoroquinolone-susceptible enterobacterial infections, with a scarce impact on infectious morbidity. This suggests that the selection of resistant flora in an inpatient ward by prophylactic antimicrobials may be reversible following the discontinuation of the prophylactic agent(s). 相似文献

Recent data indicate that the cell surface glycoprotein CD5 functions as a negative regulator of T cell receptor (TCR)-mediated signaling. In this study, we examined the regulation of CD5 surface expression during normal thymocyte ontogeny and in mice with developmental and/or signal transduction defects. The results demonstrate that low level expression of CD5 on CD4(-)CD8(-) (double negative, DN) thymocytes is independent of TCR gene rearrangement; however, induction of CD5 surface expression on DN thymocytes requires engagement of the pre-TCR and is dependent upon the activity of p56(lck). At the CD4(+)CD8(+) (double positive, DP) stage, intermediate CD5 levels are maintained by low affinity TCR-major histocompatibility complex (MHC) interactions, and CD5 surface expression is proportional to both the surface level and signaling capacity of the TCR. High-level expression of CD5 on DP and CD4(+) or CD8(+) (single positive, SP) thymocytes is induced by engagement of the alpha/beta-TCR by (positively or negatively) selecting ligands. Significantly, CD5 surface expression on mature SP thymocytes and T cells was found to directly parallel the avidity or signaling intensity of the positively selecting TCR-MHC-ligand interaction. Taken together, these observations suggest that the developmental regulation of CD5 in response to TCR signaling and TCR avidity represents a mechanism for fine tuning of the TCR signaling response. 相似文献

Binary mixtures of methanol- water and ethanol-water at their supercritical conditions have been investigated for their ability to desulfurize Midwestern bituminous coals.The reduction of pyritic, sulfatic, and organic sulfur have been as high as 60%, 97 percnt;, and 28 percnt; respectively (based on a Btu basis). The experiments have been carried out utilizing statistical experimental designs and response surface methodology. The discerning characteristics as well as optimal process conditions have been identified. Critical comparisons with respect to the coal desulfurization efficiency between the alcohol blends have been made from a process engineering point of view. It was found that methanol-water supercritical mixture is effective in desulfurization of all forms of sulfur in coal, while the enthanol-water supercritical mixture is efficient for removing only inorganic forms of sulfur from coal. 相似文献

In vitro analyses of basement membrane invasiveness employing Matrigel (a murine tumor extract rich in basement membrane components) have been performed on human breast cancer model systems. Constitutive invasiveness of different human breast cancer (HBC) cell lines has been examined as well as regulation by steroid hormones, growth factors, and oncogenes. Carcinoma cells exhibiting a mesenchymal-like phenotype (vimentin expression, lack of cell border associated uvomorulin) show dramatically increased motility, invasiveness, and metastatic potential in nude mice. These findings support the hypothesis that epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT)-like events may be instrumental in the metastatic progression of human breast cancer. The MCF-7 subline MCF-7ADR appears to have undergone such a transition. The importance of such a transition may be reflected in the emergence of vimentin expression as an indicator of poor prognosis in HBC. Matrix degradation and laminin recognition are highlighted as potential targets for antimetastatic therapy, and analyses of laminin attachment and the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family in HBC cell lines are summarized. Matrigel-based assays have proved useful in the study of the molecular mechanisms of basement membrane invasiveness, their regulation in HBC cells, and their potential as targets for antimetastatic therapy. 相似文献

Conditions for the production of near-circular polarization states of the evanescent field present in the rarer medium in total internal reflection of incident monochromatic p-polarized light at a dielectric-dielectric planar interface are determined. Such conditions are satisfied if high-index (>3.2) transparent prism materials (e.g., GaP and Ge) are used at angles of incidence well above the critical angle but sufficiently below grazing incidence. Furthermore, elliptical polarization of incident light with nonzero p and s components can be tailored to cause circular polarization of the resultant tangential electric field in the plane of the interface or circular polarization of the transverse electric field in a plane normal to the direction of propagation of the evanescent wave. Such polarization control of the evanescent field is significant, e.g., in the fluorescent excitation of molecules adsorbed at solid-liquid and solid-gas interfaces by total internal reflection. 相似文献

Ellipsometry and reflection polarimetry are almost synonymous. Therefore it is not surprising that ellipsometry and polarimetry share a common history which is that of optical polarization. The discoveries in the late 1600s by Bartholinus and Huyghens of double refraction by Iceland spar and the unusual properties of the twin beams thus generated presented insurmountable difficulties for the entrenched corpuscular-ray theory of Newton and caused research on polarization to remain stagnant in the 1700s. Major breakthroughs came in the early 1800s when Malus discovered polarization of light by reflection and his cosine-squared law and Fresnel and Arago enunciated their laws of interference of polarized light that helped establish the transverse vector nature of luminous vibrations. Important further research immediately followed on optical rotatory power by Arago, Biot, and Pasteur that ushered fundamental and practical applications of polarimetry in chemistry and biology. Fresnel deserves to be recognized as a founder of ellipsometry by virtue of his laws of reflection of polarized light at interfaces between dissimilar media and his identification and production of circular and elliptical polarization. The later part of the 19th century witnessed significant discoveries of magneto-optic and electro-optic effects by Faraday, Kerr, and Pockels that greatly enriched polarization optics and physics. The 1896 discovery of the Zeeman effect launched the exciting field of solar polarimetry. The 1864 crown achievement of Maxwell's electromagnetic (EM) theory provided a unified framework for the analysis of polarization phenomena across the entire EM spectrum. 相似文献

In this paper, wind data obtained from the Egyptian Meteorological Authority are used to assess monthly and annual wind power and wind energy. The study is based on data from 15 anemometer meteorological stations, distributed all over Egypt and covering a period ranging from 1973 to 1994. For these stations the wind data are summarized. The wind energy potential at the 25 m height was obtained by extrapolation of data at 10 m using a power-law expression. The result presents the mean wind energy density estimates and potential for application in Egypt. The analysis showed that along Red Sea coasts, the annual wind energy flux is found to be high, which indicates that these coastal stations are possible locations for wind energy utilization. On both the Mediterranean coast and in the interior parts of Egypt, some stations are of low available wind energy, while others are found to be rather high. Also, the two Weibull distribution parameters have been estimated from the wind speed data for some meteorological stations and the wind power density is calculated using the values of these parameters. 相似文献
