Nonpigmented fixed drug eruption from pseudoephedrine

The biotransformation of oxazepam by Bifidobacterium bifidum was studied. The major metabolite was purified by chromatographic methods and found to be desmethyldiazepam using NMR, IR and other physicochemical data.     

Synthesis of heterocyclic metal complexes and their evaluation as marine antifoulants

4-Amino-3-thio-1,24-triazolidine (L₁) and 4-amino-5-thio-1,3,4-thiadiazole (L_II) as well as their metal complexes of the general formulae ML_I·2H₂O and ML_IICl (M; Pb(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II)) were prepared. With Sn(II), we obtained Sn(L_I)₂·2H₂O and SnL_IICl, respectively. The structures of the compounds were identified through elemental analysis, and IR and UV spectra measurements, in addition to thermal analysis in case of the metal complexes. The antifouling properties of the compounds were tested by their incorporation into paint formulations which were applied to PVC substrates and tested in water from Alexandria western harbour. When the compounds were added at 17·5% by volume, the coated panels were fouled after 3 months of immersion. The addition of 6·7% by volume of tributyltin oxide to 15·8% of the prepared compounds in one formulation elevated the paint efficiency and prevented fouling for 11 months. Paint containing solely tributyltin oxide at the same concentration was inactive against algae.     

Peer consultation groups for psychologists in private practice: A national survey.

We report the results of the first national survey of psychologists in private practice regarding their participation in peer consultation groups. The sample (71% return) was drawn from 800 randomly selected psychologists listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. We found that 23% of the sample currently belonged to peer consultation groups, and 24% had belonged in the past. Of those not currently in groups, 61% expressed the desire to belong if one were available. There were virtually no significant demographic differences between current members and nonmembers. We examined the following group characteristics: formation, length of existence, size, membership, leadership, theoretical orientation, range of experience, time and place, content, and group process. Groups tended to be small, informal, and leaderless; however, we found great variation among groups on all dimensions. Findings also showed a high degree of satisfaction with membership. Two hundred and fifteen patients with pulmonary involvement of lobar (regional, segmental) extent were examined. The examination procedure included clinical and laboratory tests, X-ray tomographic study, and computed tomography, bronchoscopy with biopsy, cyto- and histological studies. The nosological diagnosis was established in 96.5% of cases. Differential diagnosis was found to be difficult in 3.5% of cases.     

Voluntary head stabilization in space during oscillatory trunk movements in the frontal plane performed in weightlessness

The ability voluntarily to stabilize the head in space during lateral rhythmic oscillations (0.59+/-0.09 Hz) of the trunk has been investigated during microgravity (microG) and normal gravity (nG) conditions (parabolic flights). Five healthy young subjects, who gave informed consent, were examined. The movements were performed with eyes open or eyes closed, during phases of either microG or nG. The main result was that head orientation with respect to vertical may be stabilized about the roll axis under microG with, as well as without vision, despite the reduction in vestibular afferent and muscle proprioceptive inputs. Moreover, the absence of head stabilization about the yaw axis confirms that the degrees of freedom of the neck can be independently controlled, as was previously reported. These results seem to indicate that voluntary head stabilization does not depend crucially upon static vestibular afferents. Head stabilization in space may in fact be organized on the basis of either dynamic vestibular afferents or a short-term memorized postural body schema.     

Histochemical evaluation of placental dipeptidyl peptidase IV (CD26) in pre-eclampsia: enzyme activity in villous trophoblast indicates an enhanced likelihood of gestational hypertensive disorders

Nitric oxide (NO) acts as a modulator of neuronal transmission in mature neuronal systems, including the retina. Recently, NO has also been suggested to have a trophic function during development. We examined immunocytochemically the distribution of NO-producing cells in developing and transplanted rabbit retinas. An antibody detecting the neuronal isoform of its biosynthetic enzyme, nitric oxide synthase (NOS), was used on normal developing retinas [starting at embryonic day (E) 15] and on rabbit retinal transplants after various survival times (1-139 days after surgery). Weakly stained cell bodies were first observed in the proximal margin of the neuroblastic layer at E 29. Stained processes projecting towards a developing inner plexiform layer were also visible at this time point. Immunoreactive cells were located at later stages in the innermost part of the inner nuclear layer and in the ganglion cell layer, and are likely to correspond mainly to amacrine cells. NOS-labelled cells were also found in retinal transplants. The first NOS-labelled cells appeared, as in normal developing retinas, in ages corresponding to E 29 and were still detected in transplants corresponding to postnatal day 123. NOS-labelled cells were seen in areas between rosettes, where amacrine cells are located. NOS-labelled processes were at times seen to project for long distances, forming very distinct plexuses. NOS-containing amacrine cells thus appear both in the transplants and in developing retinas in the embryonic stages, long before synaptic function involving these cells can be expected, suggesting a role for NO not only in neuromodulation but also in retinal development.     

Densification involved in the UV-based photosensitivity of silicaglasses and optical fibers

A comprehensive survey of photosensitivity in silica glasses and optical fiber is reviewed. Recent work on understanding the mechanisms contributing to germanium or aluminum doped fiber photosensitivity is discussed within the framework of photoelastic densification models     

Screening mixtures for biological activity by NMR

Development of the new drugs often involves the screening of compound libraries for biological activity. Currently, the biologically active component can only be identified if either a pure compound is being tested or if the components of a mixture are spatially separated, for example, on beads. Here, we present an NMR technique based on the transferred nuclear Overhauser effect (transfer NOE) that allows identification and structural characterization of biologically active molecules from a mixture. As an example we demonstrate that from mixtures of oligosaccharides only alpha-L-Fuc-(1-->6)-beta-D-GlcNAc-OMe binds to Aleuria aurantia agglutinin. The sign of transferred NOEs is opposite to NOEs of small molecules that do not bind to the protein and, thus, an unequivocal identification of molecules with binding activity is possible. Normally, the selection of bound ligands is further facilitated in that the absolute intensity of transfer NOEs is much greater than that of NOEs of non-binding molecules. In addition, transfer NOEs provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the ligands in the bound state. Therefore, measuring transfer NOEs of mixtures of small molecules in the presence of large molecules, like proteins, should significantly enhance the options for screening mixtures of compounds for biological activity.     

Role of the hemobiologist in the detection and prevention of post-transfusional hepatitis

To prevent post-transfusional hepatitis B and C, two epidemiologic studies were performed. The first, based on the frequencies distribution of hepatitis B virus serological markers versus sex and classes of age, has permitted the assessment of the profile of the infection in a population composed of 573 north vietnamese blood donors. There is no significant difference between men and women frequencies of HBs antigen (11.5%), anti-HBs antibody (70.2%) and anti-HBc antibody alone (3.8%), but a significant difference of no-marker frequencies: 7.8% and 17.9% in men and women respectively (X2 = 9.11; p = 0.010). The percentage of no-marker decreases when the mean age of each class increases. The second, using the increase of the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) activity as an indirect marker of non-A, non-B hepatitis for determining in a population of more than 25,000 parisian blood donors, the percentage of donors eliminated. They are between 0.70 and 0.76 in women and 2.26 and 2.46 in men. These investigations can be applied to prevent the hepatitis B transmission in a population of 102 south vietnamese women in age to procreate or to determine the percentage of blood donors eliminated (3.12%) in a population of 2,950 Parisians composed in majority (50.9%) of new donors. The hemobiologist will have an important role to elaborate strategies for orientation of blood gifts with hepatitis B and C virus markers.
