The Internet technology known as the World Wide Web is rapidly emerging as the most powerful medium of mass communication this century and it can be harnessed to dispense global, cost-effective, high-quality, multimedia patient education material. This paper reviews how the Internet has progressed from delivering simple static, text-based material to sophisticated interactive Web sites based on CGI Technology. Interactive Web sites can be used to deliver health assessment questionnaires and Web-based decision-support systems can give patients advice on the emergency management of acute medical problems. The advantages and drawbacks of this new technology, including information regulation and quality are discussed. The role of the Hospital Intranet as a patient education resource is described. The paper concludes by illustrating how patients can appreciate the 3-D structure of bones and organs using virtual reality in a VRML Web environment. 相似文献

Reversible phosphorylation on tyrosine residues is an extremely rapid and powerful posttranslational modification that is used in signalling pathways for the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. Over the past several years an impressive number of receptor-like protein tyrosine phosphatase (RPTPase) family members have been identified by molecular cloning, and undoubtedly many more will follow. A model is proposed for infiltration combustion, which incorporates the reaction kinetics more fully. Calculations have been performed on a multicomponent system with complicated kinetics, which show that the kinetic parameters have a marked effect on the basic working ones. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the field trials for oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder was to select valid diagnostic thresholds for these disorders and to compare the psychometric properties of DSM-IV criteria for oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder with previous DSM diagnostic formulations. METHOD: Structured diagnostic interviews, standardized clinician's validation diagnoses, and multiple measures of impairment were obtained for 440 clinic-referred children and adolescents aged 4-17 years. RESULTS: A diagnostic threshold of four symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder optimized identification of impaired children, improved agreement somewhat with the clinician's validation diagnosis, and had somewhat better test-retest agreement than DSM-III-R. In the case of conduct disorder, the optimal time window for ascertainment of symptoms was clarified. A diagnostic threshold of three symptoms of conduct disorder maximized accurate identification of impaired children and agreement with the clinician's validation diagnosis and resulted in slightly better test-retest agreement than DSM-III-R. Compared with the DSM-III-R definition, the DSM-IV definition of oppositional defiant disorder was somewhat more prevalent, but the prevalence of conduct disorder was essentially unchanged. CONCLUSIONS: DSM-IV definitions of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder are somewhat better than DSM-III-R definitions in terms of internal consistency and test-retest agreement, and the validity of the DSM-IV definition of oppositional defiant disorder is slightly better than that of DSM-III-R. 相似文献

Several special stability controls, including fast turbine valving are in service at AEP's Rockport generating plant to enhance the plant's transient and voltage stability performance. An account of how these supplementary controls evolved over time to meet changing system needs is provided. An overview of field tests, maintenance practices and operating history of the fast turbine valving equipment is presented. Finally, one of the successful Rockport fast valving events is analyzed in detail, with respect to valve stroke characteristics and electrical response of the Rockport units. Eighteen-month-old children were tested for mirror self-recognition using the classic rouge test or an alternative procedure, for social contingency awareness by being closely imitated for a long time, and for the capacity for communication by synchronic imitation. The classic mirror rouge test was shown to produce false negatives. Most recognizers and nonrecognizers became aware of being imitated and imitated the activity of a model, but only recognizers engaged in sustained synchronic imitation of the model. The results support our hypothesis that self-recognition and spontaneous perspective-taking develop in close synchrony because both require a capacity for secondary representation. A number of studies have localized CGRP to nerves in the cornea and iris, and it is thought that CGRP, along with other neuropeptides, is involved in pain sensation. It is also possible that CGRP could mediate trophic influences between nerve endings and corneal epithelium. This investigation utilized an in vitro rabbit corneal whole mount preparation to study the effect of topical 2.5 microM CGRP application on epithelial wound healing rates of 5 mm diameter epithelial wounds. CGRP (2.5 microM) was applied topically to 5 mm epithelial wounds at 0, 4, 16, 20, 24, 28, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 64, 68, and 72 hours after wounding and healing was visualized with fluorescein. CGRP was found to increase the epithelial wound healing rate by 25%, from 51 +/- 3 microns/hr for the control corneas, to 64 +/- 2 microns/hr for CGRP-treated corneas (mean +/- standard error, n = 10). Histological examination of the corneas following healing showed that the epithelium of the CGRP-treated corneas healed in a similar manner as in the control corneas. These findings may have clinical utility for the understanding and treatment of corneal and other epithelial wounds. 相似文献

Abstract—The plane-strain initiation and growth fracture toughnesses of powder-metallurgy-processed, SiC particulate-reinforced 2009 plate were measured at temperatures from 25°C to 316°C. Initiation toughness from electrical potential monitoring ( K JICi ) is 18 MPa°m at 25°C, and is nearly constant to 220°C before decreasing sharply to 6 MPa°m at 316°C. Growth toughness, given by the tearing modulus ( T R ), is less than 3 from 25°C to 125°C, and increases dramatically above 200°C. The magnitude and temperature dependence of initiation toughness depend on detection of the critical fracture event. Standard measures of toughness K IC and K JIC exceed K JICi and increase to a plateau with increasing temperature. The fracture mode for the composite is microvoid nucleation, growth and coalescence at all temperatures. Void nucleation is associated with SiC; such particles both crack and create stress and plastic strain concentrations that rupture the interface or adjacent matrix, particularly at corners. Matrix plasticity and cavitation increase with increasing temperature. Void growth is regular at all temperatures, but limited by adjacent SiC particles. Both K JICi and T R are governed by the temperature-dependent crack-tip plastic stress and strain fields, and the intrinsic damage resistance of the composite microstructure. 相似文献

A technology for increasing both the two-terminal gate-drain breakdown and subsequently the three-terminal-off-state breakdown of AlInAs/GaInAs high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) to record values without substantial impact on other parameters is presented. The breakdown in these structures is dependent on the multiplication of electrons injected from the source (channel current) and the gate (gate leakage) into the channel. In addition, holes are generated by high fields at the drain and are injected back into the gate and source electrodes. These phenomena can be suppressed by increasing the gate barrier height and alleviating the fields at the drain. Both have been achieved by incorporating a p+-2DEG junction as the gate that modulates the 2DEG gas and by utilizing selective regrowth of the source and drain regions by MOCVD. Interest in measuring the quality of life (QL) in relation to health care has increased enormously in recent years. This is also true for end-stage renal failure where it is important not only to provide a better survival but also the quality of that survival. The aim of this study was to assess the relative influence of different kinds of treatment on end-stage renal disease after the patients' evaluation of their overall QL. We studied 167 patients receiving conservative treatment (45), haemodialysis (44), haemodialysis and erythropoieth (36), and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (42). The patients completed an original questionnaire consisting of 37 questions divided in five groups and generating 15 QL variables: personal data (name, gender, age, basic kidney disease); sociodemographic data influenced by the illness (family history, working ability, employment status); general health characteristics (fatigue, appetite, wound healing, sleep, resistance to cold); aspects of private life that are mostly influenced by the disease (social interaction, traveling, mood, sports, sexual life), and patients subjective assessment of their condition (self care and happiness). Patients on haemodialysis showed lower levels of QL than that on peritoneal dialysis related to fatigue (p < 0.01), working ability (p < 0.05), wound healing (p < 0.05), and appetite (p < 0.01) compared to the conservative treatment. Peritoneal dialysis had also a statistically significant positive influence on fatigue (p < 0.05) compared to conservative treatment. However, erythropoletin treatment showed better results with regard to traveling (p < 0.05), resistance to cold (p < 0.01), self care (p < 0.05) and mood (p < 0.05) compared to peritoneal dialysis, and working ability (p < 0.05), fatigue (p < 0.05) and mood (p < 0.05) compared to conservative treatment and haemodialysis. 相似文献
