Seismic retrofitting of nonductile beam-column sub-assemblage using FRP wrapping and steel plate jacketing

The paper discusses the aspects of repair and retrofitting technique adopted for a damaged reinforced concrete beam-column joint specimen under cyclic loading. A specimen designed based on Indian Standard specifications with consideration of seismic load but without adopting ductile detailing (NonDuctile) was investigated under reverse cyclic loading. Then, the damaged nonductile specimen was repaired with epoxy mortar and grouted using low viscous polymer, and retrofitted using fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) wrapping in beam and column components and steel plate jacketing in joint region. The experimental results showed that the retrofitted specimen not only regained its original strength and stiffness but also has overcome the deficiencies of nonductile detailing. The present study shows that a proper repair and adequate retrofitting technique can be used for strengthening and improvement of damaged regions in reinforced concrete structures.     

The Integrated Power Switch

Utilizing a signal from transistor transistor logic (TTL) circuits, the integrated power switch (IPS) can control 40 kW. Protection against overload conditions enables the use of transistors which have ideal switching characteristics. Each half-section of the IPS is electrically isolated from the signal input using optical couplers. Discrete component assemblies, printed-circuit boards, thick-film or medium-scale integrated substrates each have been utilized. The forced-air-cooled heat sink was designed for maximum cooling. Two types of IPS's were initially constructed: 500 V/60 A, and 100 V/200 A, with additional availability of 500 V/100 A devices in small quantity. Its capability to work from continuous operation to 10 kHz makes the IPS universally applicable to most power-conversion applications with-in its current and voltage limitation.     

Mutational analysis of the Drosophila sister-chromatid cohesion protein ORD and its role in the maintenance of centromeric cohesion

The ord gene is required for proper segregation of all chromosomes in both male and female Drosophila meiosis. Here we describe the isolation of a null ord allele and examine the consequences of ablating ord function. Cytologically, meiotic sister-chromatid cohesion is severely disrupted in flies lacking ORD protein. Moreover, the frequency of missegregation in genetic tests is consistent with random segregation of chromosomes through both meiotic divisions, suggesting that sister cohesion may be completely abolished. However, only a slight decrease in viability is observed for ord null flies, indicating that ORD function is not essential for cohesion during somatic mitosis. In addition, we do not observe perturbation of germ-line mitotic divisions in flies lacking ORD activity. Our analysis of weaker ord alleles suggests that ORD is required for proper centromeric cohesion after arm cohesion is released at the metaphase I/anaphase I transition. Finally, although meiotic cohesion is abolished in the ord null fly, chromosome loss is not appreciable. Therefore, ORD activity appears to promote centromeric cohesion during meiosis II but is not essential for kinetochore function during anaphase.     

Enhancement of optical processes in coupled plasmonic nanocavities [Invited

We present detailed experimental and numerical investigations of resonances in deep nanogroove gratings in metallic substrates. These plasmonic nanocavity gratings feature enhanced fields within the grooves that enable a large enhancement of linear and nonlinear optical processes. This enhancement relies on both localized and propagating surface plasmons on the nanopatterned surface. We show that the efficiency of optical processes such as Raman scattering and four-wave mixing is dramatically enhanced by plasmonic nanocavity gratings.     

Local damage to reinforced concrete structures caused by impact of aircraft engine missiles Part 1. Test program, method and results

Structural damage induced by an aircraft crashing into a reinforced concrete structure includes local damage caused by the deformable engines, and global damage caused by the entire aircraft. Local damage to the target may consist of spalling of concrete from its front face together with missile penetration into it, scabbing of concrete from its rear face, and perforation of missile through it. Until now, local damage to concrete structures has been mainly evaluated by rigid missile impact tests. Past research work regarding local damage caused by impact of deformable missiles has been limited. This paper presents the results of a series of impact tests of small-, intermediate-, and full-scale engine models into reinforced concrete panels. The purpose of the tests was to determine the local damage to a reinforced concrete structure caused by the impact of a deformable aircraft engine.     

On a fast, robust estimator of the mode: Comparisons to other robust estimators with applications

Advances in computing power enable more widespread use of the mode, which is a natural measure of central tendency since it is not influenced by the tails in the distribution. The properties of the half-sample mode, which is a simple and fast estimator of the mode of a continuous distribution, are studied. The half-sample mode is less sensitive to outliers than most other estimators of location, including many other low-bias estimators of the mode. Its breakdown point is one half, equal to that of the median. However, because of its finite rejection point, the half-sample mode is much less sensitive to outliers that are all either greater or less than the other values of the sample. This is confirmed by applying the mode estimator and the median to samples drawn from normal, lognormal, and Pareto distributions contaminated by outliers. It is also shown that the half-sample mode, in combination with a robust scale estimator, is a highly robust starting point for iterative robust location estimators such as Huber's M-estimator. The half-sample mode can easily be generalized to modal intervals containing more or less than half of the sample. An application of such an estimator to the finding of collision points in high-energy proton–proton interactions is presented.     

A 12-year study (1975-1986) of mortality in methadone-maintenance patients: selected demographic characteristics and drug-use patterns of AIDS and non-AIDS-related deaths

This paper describes changes in demographic characteristics and drug use patterns of persons who died while enrolled in a New York City methadone-maintenance program during the years preceding and subsequent to the AIDS epidemic. Persons dying from AIDS were more likely to be younger, Hispanic, and male than those dying from other causes. Drug use increased during the 12-year study period, and the spread of the HIV infection among drug users may be reflected in an increased use of injectable drugs.     

Autologous versus allogeneic T cell-stimulated IL-6 production by dermal fibroblasts

T cells adhere to human dermal fibroblasts (HDF). This cellular interaction leads to a pronounced secretion of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 via a juxtacrine stimulation induced by HDF-associated IL-1. Upon stimulation, fibroblasts express various surface proteins such as MCH-I molecules, which may interact with corresponding receptors on T cells. The present study was conducted to further investigate the mechanism of this complex interaction with regard to the secretion of IL-6 in cocultures of T cells and HDF. IL-6 was time- and dose-dependently upregulated in such cocultures. Spatial separation of the cells by microporous membranes resulted in a 90% reduction of IL-6 secretion, but when cells had limited cell contact IL-6 secretion was increased again. Allogeneic cocultures of T cells and HDF showed increased capacity of IL-6 stimulation as compared to autologous cultures. Our results suggest that MHC-I/T cell receptor interaction modulates IL-6 secretion in allogeneic and autologous cocultures.
