Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in a husband and wife

A 53-year-old man died of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) after a 1.5-year clinical course. Four and a half years later, his then 55-year-old widow died from CJD after a 1-month illness. Both patients had typical clinical and neuropathologic features of the disease, and pathognomonic proteinase-resistant amyloid protein ("prion" protein, or PrP) was present in both brains. Neither patient had a family history of neurologic disease, and molecular genetic analysis of their PrP genes was normal. No medical, surgical, or dietary antecedent of CJD was identified; therefore, we are left with the unanswerable alternatives of human-to-human transmission or the chance occurrence of sporadic CJD in a husband and wife.     

Isolation of a novel mycobacterium from an adolescent with cervical lymphadenitis

A slow-growing mycobacterium was isolated from a cervical lymph node of an adolescent male. This isolate produced small, smooth, scotochromogenic colonies after 6 weeks of incubation at 25 degrees C and 30 degrees C (but not at 37 degrees C or 43 degrees C). The results of 16S-rRNA gene sequencing and high-performance liquid chromatography suggest that this isolate belongs to a hitherto unrecognised pathogenic species.     

TiO2 coating of high surface area silica gel by chemical vapor deposition of TiCl4 in a fluidized-bed reactor

TiO2 was deposited on high surface area porous silica gel (400 m2g(-1)) in a fluidized bed reactor. Chemical vapor deposition was employed for the coating under vacuum conditions with TiCl4 as precursor. Nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy were applied to characterize the obtained TiO2-SiO2 composites with different Ti loadings up to 5 wt%. Only a slight decrease in the specific surface area was detected at low Ti loadings. At a Ti loading of 2 wt%, TiO2 was found to be highly dispersed on the SiO2 surface likely in form of a thin film. At higher Ti loadings, two weak reflections corresponding to anatase TiO2 were observed in the diffraction patterns indicating the presence of crystalline bulk TiO2. High resolution XPS clearly distinguished two types of Ti species, i.e., Ti-O-Si at the interface and Ti-O-Ti in bulk TiO2. The presence of polymeric TiOx species at low Ti loadings was confirmed by a blue shift in the UV-vis spectra as compared to bulk TiO2. All these results point to a strong interaction between the TiO2 deposit and the porous SiO2 substrate especially at low Ti loadings.     

Clinical effects of supplemental enteral nutrition solution in severe polytrauma

A clinical, bacteriological, serological and patho-anatomical study was carried out on 12 goats surviving the acute stage of contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP), experimentally produced with Mycoplasma capricolum ssp. capripneumoniae (M. capripneumoniae), with the major aims of investigating the chronic stage of the disease and elucidating the possibility of a carrier state beyond the acute fulminant phase. The goats were killed 9, 16, 82 or 126 days after the onset of acute clinical signs. On day 9, clinical signs included low grade fever and persistent coughing. Thereafter, only intermittent coughing was recorded. Serum titres of complement-fixing antibodies to M. capripneumoniae were high at the period of fever but dropped thereafter. Post-mortem examination showed acute fibrinous pleuropneumonia on days 9 and 16, and chronic pleuropneumonia on days 82 and 126, including sequester formations in goats killed on day 126. Mycoplasma capripneumoniae was isolated on days 9 and 16 but not on later occasions. The study showed that goats recovered from acute CCPP may have lesions for a long time thereafter but provide no evidence of a carrier state among long-term survivors.

A brief history of behavioral medicine and aging is followed by a series of perspectives that help to understand how age is used as a variable in this research, the relative importance of age to declines in cognitive functioning, and the impact of behavioral risk indicators on healthy survival. Also discussed are potential problems in age-related research, ways to improve the knowledge base in behavioral medicine and aging, and thoughts about future challenges to enhance work in behavioral medicine and aging. The effect of multiple yeasts co-inoculations on Sauvignon Blanc wine aroma composition,sensory properties and consumer preference

Consumer acceptance testing has been only recently applied in wine research, to assess wine sensory attributes that affect hedonic liking. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Saccharomyces yeast co-inoculations on wine volatile composition and sensory profiles, and to determine if differences were sufficient enough to affect consumer acceptance. Fermentations were conducted using two- and three-yeast co-inoculations, and single strains. Yeast inocula differed substantially in volatile thiols and other flavour compounds, and in their sensory properties. Wines from four yeast inocula which showed large sensory differences were subjected to consumer testing by 120 consumers, with differences in overall liking found. Four clusters of consumers were identified, with one group strongly preferring the two-yeast co-inoculated wine with an intermediate sensory profile, while another group favoured the wine made using the three-yeast co-inoculation. This study has demonstrated that the yeast inoculum used to conduct fermentation affects consumer acceptance.     

Videoendoscopic swallowing study for diagnosis of Zenker''s diverticuli

Eight nonhaemophilic patients with factor VIII (FVIII) inhibitors were reported. There was no difference in sex distribution. Median age at diagnosis was 62 years (ranging from 14 to 73 years). No associated disorders were revealed and all the patients were presented with severe muscular or arthral bleeding. Inhibitor titre was measured by the Bethesda method, which were 6.4, 126.0, 155.0, 4.8, 56.0, 13.5, 35.0 and 150.0 BU mL-1, respectively, at diagnosis. FVIII:C levels were less than 1 U dL-1 in seven patients and less than 2 U dL-1 in one patient. The median vWF:Ag level was 210% (ranging from 80% to 340%). All the patients had good response to activated prothrombin complex concentrates for acute bleeding episodes and prednisone for inhibitor elimination. Inhibitors completely eliminated in seven patients within a follow-up duration over 1 year, and one patient died of intracranial haemorrhage when her inhibitor titre decreased to 4.5 BU mL-1 and FVIII:C increased to 21 U dL-1.     

Renal and cardiac complications of drug abuse

The case is presented of a young man who, after prolonged intravenous narcotic administration, developed subacute bacterial endocarditis involving the aortic valve, and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. After treatment of and recovery from renal failure, persistent proteinuria was shown to be caused by focal glomerulosclerosis. The association of these lesions with "mainlining" is reviewed.
