Robust modeling of RC structures with an “event-by-event” strategy

The sequentially linear analysis is a robust alternative to nonlinear finite element analysis of structures when bifurcation, snap-back or divergence problems arise. The load–displacement response is captured by a series of linear analyses as a sequence of ‘events’. Every ‘event’ is a scaled critical state corresponding to the reaching of some peak of some saw-tooth for some softening element. Now, the approach is extended with a rippled saw-tooth curve which applies to any stress–strain diagram, including compression nonlinearity and yielding of reinforcement. Several RC structural examples demonstrate that both sharp snap-backs as well as ductile failures can be handled correctly.     

The Fight against the Influenza A Virus H1N1: Synthesis,Molecular Modeling,and Biological Evaluation of Benzofurazan Derivatives as Viral RNA Polymerase Inhibitors

The influenza RNA polymerase complex, which consists of the three subunits PA, PB1, and PB2, is a promising target for the development of new antiviral drugs. A large library of benzofurazan compounds was synthesized and assayed against influenza virus A/WSN/33 (H1N1). Most of the new derivatives were found to act by inhibiting the viral RNA polymerase complex through disruption of the complex formed between subunits PA and PB1. Docking studies were also performed to elucidate the binding mode of benzofurazans within the PB1 binding site in PA and to identify amino acids involved in their mechanism of action. The predicted binding pose is fully consistent with the biological data and lays the foundation for the rational development of more effective PA–PB1 inhibitors.     

Improving satellite services with cooperative communications

This paper proposes new transmission schemes for the delivery of satellite services. In the proposed scenarios, mobile terminals are allowed to forward the signal received from the satellite. This scheme provides spatial diversity just like MIMO transmission schemes. Moreover, the coverage area is extended because masked terminals have an additional opportunity to get the service from neighboring terminals. We use the paradigm of cooperative communications to compare the advantages and limitations of several scenarios in hybrid terrestrial/satellite systems. In particular, we study the following basic transmission scheme: in a first time slot, the satellite sends its signal and, in a second time slot, mobile terrestrial terminals are relaying the satellite signal. An analysis framework is proposed and applied to this cooperation scenario at the destination terminal. The framework is modeling the cooperation process and clearly separates the control part from the data user part. Cooperation and cooperator modeling

In this text, we argue that user modeling and system modeling should be taken into account at the same time to allow cooperativity: they are two sides of a same interaction. We focus on interlocutor modeling (the human-human homonym of user modeling) and develop three situations where interlocutor modeling is crucial: when there is a need of transforming the beliefs of the cooperator (when there is a knowledge gap or a resistance), when the interpretation of the cooperator's communication act is ambiguous and relies on implicit meaning, and when there is a specific need need of anticipating the other's understanding (in risky or irreversible situations).     

Anodic synthesis of sulfur-bridged polyaniline coatings onto Fe sheets

Sulfur-bridged polyaniline coatings are obtained onto Fe anodes by electrolyzing a basic solution of one aniline and ammonium sulfide. Their sulfur content ranges from 7% to 17%, depending on the substituents on aniline. Variously substituted anilines may be polymerized in this way and coating pollution by azobenzene formed in a side reaction is almost completely avoided. Sulfur probably enters the polymer chains through a free radical mechanism. HS^? intermediates being formed by both homogeneous and anodic oxidation of HS^? anions. Coatings from N-allylaniline, being thermally curable, show satisfactory physical properties.     

Differential effects of the N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist DL-2-amino-5-phosphonovalerate on acquisition of fear of auditory and contextual cues.

Intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist {dl}-2-amino-5-phosphonovalerate (APV) before tone-shock pairings caused a dose-dependent suppression of acquisition of fear of contextual cues associated with shock in 3 experiments involving 110 rats. Acquisition of fear of the tone was not impaired. Exp 2 showed that the fear of the tone was associative and that this tone-shock association was less affected by APV than was a context-shock association. Rats receiving APV before context-shock pairings showed an equivalent loss of fear regardless of whether testing occurred 1 or 28 days after training. It appears that icv administration of APV blocks acquisition of context conditioning by affecting NMDA receptors in the hippocampus. Activity at these receptors at the time of acquisition seems critical for later expression of both intermediate (1 day to 2 wks) and remote (4 wks) fear memories.
