ANALYSIS OF BATCH DRYING DATA USING SAS

An analysis technique is described which uses the nonlinear curve fitting capabilities of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) to analyze batch drying data. The technique does not require any apriori assumptions about whether a constant rate period exists. Rather, the only assumptions necessary are the possible forms of the equations which can be used to describe the drying phenomenon. The program will then determine, based upon statistical techniques, where each equation should be used during the drying process in order to best describe the overall drying process. Two examples are given; the first analyzes the drying of. sand, a material having a constant rate period; the second analyzes the data describing the drying of French fried potato pieces.     

Hemodynamics, metabolism and function of the perfused pancreas under normal temperature]

The canine pancreas-duodenum has been perfused for 3 h with a membrane oxygenator, a pulsatile pump and a heat exchanger at a temperature of 37 degrees C. Among the criteria used in this study, the insulin output into the venous blood in response to glucose administration, as well as pancreas secretion after secretion stimulation were those found to be the most reliable indicators as to the viability of the pancreas. This is further supported by an average oxygen consumption of 0,77 ml O2/100 g at a constant flow of 80 ml/min and a perfusion pressure of 75 mm Hg. The pressure/flow relationship as for any other perfused organ was a safe indicator as to the viability of the perfused pancreas. The functional viability correlated with our anatomical findings.     

Factor structure of the WISC-R for a clinic-referred population and specific subgroups.

Compared the factor structure of the WISC-R for a clinic-referred population of 594 2nd–6th graders and specific subgroups (emotionally handicapped, learning disabled and slow learner combined, and no significant problem) with that obtained by A. S. Kaufman on the WISC-R (1975) standardization sample. Similar factor-analytic procedures were used, and 3 factors were extracted from each group. The 1st 2 factors, Verbal Comprehension and Perceptual Organization, which were identified on the standardization sample, were consistently in evidence. However, Factor 3 was much less stable, and the conclusion was drawn that there may be some genuine differences between normal and clinical populations on that factor. Stimulation of gastric acid secretion by dimaprit in unanesthetized rats

In unanesthetized rats, dimaprit and histamine given by intravenous infusion were about equipotent in stimulating gastric acid secretion. The maximal rate of acid secretion in response to dimaprit was significantly greater than to histamine but not significantly different from the response to pentagastrin.     

A manual procedure for designing mailman-routes

This article describes a manual routing procedure for Denmark's Directorate of Posts and Telegraphs and shows its application to the mailman (delivery carrier) routing problem. The proposed procedure is designed to minimize total transportation time on a route, subject to the restrictions: (1) maximum allowable route size, (2) type of customers (business versus residential), (3) transportation available for the mailman, (4) traffic patterns, and (5) characteristics of the delivery points. In addition, the proposed method explicitly considers the regulations of customer service, working hours, traffic, etc.     

Empirical modeling of systematic spectrophotometric errors

Spectrophotometers, as electro-mechanical-optical devices, perform at a finite level of accuracy. This accuracy is limited by such factors as monochromator design, detector linearity, and cost. Generally, both the diagnosis and correction of spectrophotometric errors require a number of calibrated standard reference materials and considerable effort and commitment on the part of the user. A technique using multiple linear regression has been developed, based on the measurement of several suitably chosen standard reference materials, to both diagnose and correct systematic spectrophotometric errors, including photometric zero errors photometric linear and nonlinear scale errors, wavelength linear and nonlinear scale errors, and bandwidth errors. The use of a single chromatic ceramic tile to correct systematic errors improved the colorimetric accuracy of a set of chromatic and neutral tiles by a factor of two for a typical industrial-oriented spectrophotometer. Greater improvement can be achieved by increasing the number of tiles and performing a separate regression at each measured wavelength., These techniques have been extremely useful in improving inter-instrument agreement for instruments with similar geometry.
