The majority of microfluidic devices used for cell culture, including Organ-on-a-Chips (Organ Chips), are fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer because it is flexible, optically clear, and easy to mold. However, PDMS possesses significant challenges for high volume manufacturing and its tendency to absorb small hydrophobic compounds limits its usefulness as a material in devices used for drug evaluation studies. Here, we demonstrate that a subset of optically clear, elastomeric, styrenic block copolymers based on styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene exhibit reduced absorption of small hydrophobic molecules and drug compounds compared to PDMS and that they can be fabricated into microfluidic devices with fine features and the flexibility required for Organ Chips using mass production techniques of injection molding and extrusion.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a novel Route Maintenance scheme for IEEE 802.11 wireless mesh networks. Despite lack of mobility and energy constraints, reactive routing protocols such as AODV and DSR suffer from frequent route breakages in 802.11 based infrastructure wireless mesh networks. In these networks, if any intermediate node fails to successfully transmit a packet to the next hop node after a certain number of retransmissions, the link layer reports a transmission problem to the network layer. Reactive routing protocols systematically consider this as a link breakage (and therefore a route breakage). Transmission failures can be caused by a number of factors e.g. interference or noise and can be transient in nature. Frequent route breakages result in significant performance degradation. The proposed mechanism considers multiple factors to differentiate between links with transient transmission problems from those links which have permanent transmission problems and takes a coherent decision on link breakage. The proposed mechanism is implemented in AODV for single-radio single-channel mesh network and an extension is incorporated in multi-radio multi-channel scenarios. Simulation results show substantial performance improvement compared to classical AODV and local route repair schemes.  相似文献

Ant colonies, and more generally social insect societies, are distributed systems that, in spite of the simplicity of their individuals, present a highly structured social organization. As a result of this organization, ant colonies can accomplish complex tasks that in some cases far exceed the individual capacities of a single ant. The study of ant colonies behavior and of their self-organizing capacities is interesting for computer scientists because it provides models of distributed organization which are useful to solve difficult optimization and distributed control problems. In this paper we overview some models derived from the observation of real ants, emphasizing the role played by stigmergy as distributed communication paradigm, and we show how these models have inspired a number of novel algorithms for the solution of distributed optimization and distributed control problems.  相似文献

Corals, like many other coelenterates, contain fluorescent pigments that show considerable homology with the well known green fluorescent protein of the jellyfish Aequoria. In corals, unlike jellyfish, multiple proteins are present and the range of excitations and emissions suggest the possibility of energy transfer. The occurrence of F?rster resonant energy transfer (FRET) between fluorescent proteins in corals has already been reported and time-resolved spectra have shown the effect on fluorescent lifetime, but without any spatial resolution. Lifetime confocal microscopy offers lower time resolution but excellent spatial resolution. Lifetimes of the isolated A. millepora pigments amilFP490, amilFP504, and amilFP593 (names indicate emission peaks) were 2.8, 2.9, and 2.9 ns, respectively. In the coral sample, imaging the entire emission spectrum from 420 nm, the mean lifetime was reduced to 1.5 ns, implying that FRET was occurring. Looking just at the fluorescence from FRET donors the lifetime was even shorter, at 1.3 ns, supporting this interpretation. In contrast, no reduction in lifetime is seen in the coral Euphyllia ancora, where the pigment distribution also suggests that the pigments are unlikely to be involved in photoprotection. This study set out to determine the extent of FRET between pigments in two corals, Acropora millepora and Euphyllia, ancora which differ in the arrangement of their pigments and hence possibly in pigment function.  相似文献

This paper describes a parameterized distributed algorithm applicable to any directed graph topology. The function parameter of our algorithm is instantiated to produce distributed algorithms for both fundamental and high level applications, such as shortest path calculus and depth-first-search tree construction. Due to fault resilience properties of our algorithm, the resulting protocols are self-stabilizing at no additional cost. Self-stabilizing protocols can resist transient failures and guarantee system recovery in a finite time. Since the condition on the function parameter (being a strictly idempotent r-operator) permits a broad range of applications to be implemented, the solution presented in our paper can be useful for a large class of distributed systems. The character of transient electric fields induced in spherical homogeneous tissue models of man and animals by incident electromagnetic fields similar to that originating from lightning and EMP generators has been theoretically determined. The magnitude of the induced fields is found to be approximately proportional to the time rate of change of the incident field and independent of the pulsewidth. It was also found that maximum EMP induced field in spherical shaped bodies is nearly proportional to the radius of the body. Therefore, for EMP safety standards, more consideration should be given to the time rate of change of the incident field rather than to the pulsewidth, and when laboratory animal data are used as a guide they should be extrapolated to account for body size.  相似文献
