Membrane processes are able to separate liquid mixtures as well as mixtures of gases or vapours according to the sizes, solubilities, rates of diffusion or charges of the components. A separation is also possible using membranes in which the transport is coupled to a specific chemical reaction between the permeand and the membrane (facilitated or carrier mediated transport). This paper discusses aspects related to carrier‐mediated separation processes such as the transport mechanisms, the choice of appropriate carriers, the incorporation of carriers in the polymeric membrane material, the coating of porous support membranes with thin selective layers of the carrier‐polymer and, finally, the choice of appropriate parameters for the separation process. The separation of gas mixtures by carrier‐membranes appears very promising from a technical point of view. Experimental membrane samples often show excellent separation factors, but they have not met the permeability requirements for an economic use so far. 相似文献

Diesel particulate filters (DPF) are indispensable parts of modern automotive exhaust gas aftertreatment systems due to the stringent emissions legislation. For a fuel-efficient control strategy, it would be beneficial to determine directly and in-operation their actual trapped soot mass. Two novel approaches—based on the electrical conductivity of trapped soot particles—emerged recently. By measuring the electrical resistance between different single walls inside the filter, the soot load is determined with local resolution. The microwave-based technique is a contactless approach that gives an integral value depending on the soot mass in the DPF. We present investigations on loading and regeneration of DPFs in a dynamometer test bench applying both methods. The results are compared with each other and correlated with the differential pressure and the soot mass. Especially the microwave-based technique has a potential for serial application. 相似文献

Soot is a climate forcer and a dangerous air pollutant that has been increasingly regulated. In aviation, regulatory measurements of soot mass concentration in the exhaust of aircraft turbine engines are to be based on measurements of black carbon (BC) calibrated to elemental carbon (EC) content of diffusion flame soot. The calibration soot must currently meet only one criterion: minimum EC to total carbon (TC) ratio of 0.8. However, not including soot properties other than the EC/TC ratio may potentially lead to discrepancies between different BC measurements. We studied the response of two instruments, the AVL Micro-Soot Sensor (MSS) and the Artium Laser-Induced Incandescence 300 (LII), to soot from two miniature combustion aerosol standard (mini-CAST) burners. By changing the air-fuel ratio, premixing nitrogen into the fuel, and using a catalytic stripper to remove volatile compounds, we produced a wide range of particle morphologies and EC contents. As the EC content decreased, both the instruments underreported the EC mass, but the LII diverged more severely. Upon closer investigation of eight conditions with EC/TC > 0.8, the LII underreporting was found independent of primary particle size, but increased with decreasing geometric mean diameter of the soot agglomerates. As the geometric mean diameter decreased from 160 nm to 50 nm, the differences between the LII and MSS increased from 15% to 50%. The results suggest that in addition to EC content, calibration procedures for the regulatory BC measurements may need to take particle size distributions into account.

Waxes are important as building material and for the chemical communication of the honeybee Apis mellifera carnica. In this study chemometric tools were established for classifying the different waxes inside the hive. By using gas chromatography in combination with mass spectrometry, components of different types of waxes were analyzed. By considering different substance classes of waxes, discriminant function analyses revealed distinct subtypes of comb waxes and of cuticular waxes. It is shown that the aging of comb wax is in part a spontaneous physicochemical process due to differential volatilities of compound classes with different chain length ranges. On the other hand it is directly influenced by the bees by adding lipolytic enzymes to the comb wax. The data suggest that the varying cuticular wax and comb wax compositions could serve as cues for bees to recognize castes, sexes, or comb age. 相似文献

Macroporous, monosized poly(meta‐divinylbenzene) and poly(para‐divinylbenzene) beads have been prepared by the two‐step activated swelling method with toluene or 2‐ethylhexanoic acid as pore‐forming agents. The type of divinylbenzene isomer as well as the type of porogen has a large effect on both physical and chemical properties of the monodisperse beads. Large pores are obtained with 2‐ethylhexanoic acid as porogen while beads prepared in the presence of toluene consist of only small pores and exhibit a shrinking behavior upon drying. The beads have considerable amounts of residual vinyl groups at the end of polymerization, as determined by bromination and Fourier transform IR analysis. With the aim of establishing a versatile and easy synthesis of branched saccharides for biological applications, we used molecular-dynamics simulations to model Lewis(y) to two classes of di- or triantennary saccharide mimetics. One set of mimetics was based on 1,3,5-tris(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexane (TMC) as the core, the other on furan, and both were derivatised with galactose and/or fucose. The TMC-based saccharides were biotinylated, while the furan disaccharides were treated with maleimide-activated biotin in a Diels-Alder fashion to yield oxazatricyclodecanes (OTDs). These were then assayed as cell-surface labels in human colon (SW480 and CaCo-2), liver (PLC), Glia (U333 CG 343) and ovary (SKOV-3) tumour cell lines. Discrete staining patterns were observed in all cells, usually at one or two poles of the cells, particularly with the asymmetric 3-beta-L-fucopyranosyloxymethyl-4-beta-D-galactopyranosyloxymethyl-OTD. Normal SV40-transformed fibroblasts (SV80) showed no staining. Adhesion of the highly metastatic mouse melanoma line B16 F10 to fibronectin was inhibited by 80 % by the TMC-digalactoside and by 30 % by 3,4-bis-(beta-D-galactopyranosyloxymethyl)furan. None of the saccharide mimetics inhibited the adhesion of the less metastatic B16 F1 line. Migration of B16 F10 cells through Matrigel was greatly inhibited by the TMC-digalactoside and weakly inhibited by the TMC-trigalactoside. The saccharide mimetics that had shown the best structural agreements with the terminal saccharides of Lewis(y) in the molecular dynamics simulation were also the most biologically potent compounds; this underlines the predictive nature of molecular dynamics simulations. The use of the non-saccharide cores enabled us to adapt spacer lengths and terminal saccharides to optimise the structures to bind more avidly to cell-surface lectins. 相似文献

CNT based elastomer‐hybrid‐nanocomposites prepared by melt mixing have been investigated showing promising results in technologically relevant electrical, mechanical, and fracture‐mechanical properties. It is demonstrated that the incorporation of CNT in silica‐filled natural rubber results in a good dispersion of the CNT. The materials show an enhanced mechanical stiffness and tensile strength, an increased modulus, and a high electrical conductivity with quite low amounts of CNT, though the tear resistance under dynamical loading is slightly reduced. Using DMA and dielectric spectra, a better understanding of the conduction mechanism, the polymer/tube interaction, and the filler networking in CNT nanocomposites is achieved.

A planar anode‐supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been tested to investigate gas tightness of the electrolyte and the applied seals. Gas leaks reduce the efficiency of the SOFC and it is thus important to determine and minimise them. Probe gases (He and Ar) and a Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer were used to detect both internal (through electrolyte) and external (through seals) gas leaks. The internal gas leak through the electrolyte was quantified under different conditions, as was the external leak from the surroundings to the anode. The internal gas leak did not depend on the pressure difference between the anode and the cathode gas compartment, and can thus be described as diffusion driven. External leaks between the surroundings and the anode, but not the cathode gas compartment was observed. They were influenced by the pressure difference and are thus driven by both concentration and pressure gradients. The measured gas leaks deduced from the probe gas experiments and the total leak calculated from the deviation between the Emf defined by the gases and the cell OCV (which contains all gas leaks as well as effects of electronic leaks) were compared. Good agreement between the two measures was observed. 相似文献
