Summary Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and 10 unsaturated fatty acid fractions and ethyl esters of unsaturated fatty acid fractions prepared from fish oils were tested on their inhibitory activity againstCandida albicans. Oxidation of highly unsaturated fractions from fish oil and ethyl esters of unsaturated fatty acid fractions of menhaden, pilchard, and cod liver oils increases their antifungal activity. Saturated and unsaturated quaternaries were tested for their antifungal activity. Hexadecyltriethylammonium bromide and hexadecylpyridinium bromide showed the highest activity againstCandida albicans, Aspergillus niger, andRhyzopus nigricans. Any lengthening of the carbon chain more than C16 weakened the activity of both saturated triethylammonium bromide and pyridinium bromide. An increase of unsaturation enhanced it. The antifungal activity of quaternaries prepared from fish oils was about 4,000 times stronger than that of oxidized highly unsaturated fatty acid fractions prepared from fish oils. The decisive factor in the highly inhibitory activity of quaternaries against fungi might depend on their positively charged portion since the surface of microorganisms is, as a rule, negatively charged. Silver iodide hydrosols prepared in statu nascendi exhibit some specific effects that cannot be explained on the basis of the existing models of silver iodide hydrosols. These effects are acceleration of a heterogeneous exchange process caused by coagulation of the system, and different aggregation number obtained in the same system applying two different exchange methods. In order to explain these effects, a comparison has been made of the differences between the data calculated on the basis of the existing model of silver iodide hydrosols and the values determined by radiometric, optic, and sedimentation analysis. The previous assumption on the existence of a new structural form of silver iodide, characteristic of stable silver iodide hydrosols, has been confirmed. This new structural form of silver iodide transforms into known hexagonal and cubic modifications during the aggregation of primary particles of silver iodide to secondary ones. The properties of the new structural form of silver iodide are predicted.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a new tolerance-based Branch and Bound algorithm for solving NP-hard problems. In particular, we consider the asymmetric traveling salesman problem (ATSP), an NP-hard problem with large practical relevance. The main algorithmic contribution is our lower bounding strategy that uses the expected costs of including arcs in the solution to the assignment problem relaxation of the ATSP, the so-called lower tolerance values. The computation of the lower bound requires the calculation of a large set of lower tolerances. We apply and adapt a finding from [23] that makes it possible to compute all lower tolerance values efficiently. Computational results show that our Branch and Bound algorithm exhibits very good performance in comparison with state-of-the-art algorithms, in particular for difficult clustered ATSP instances.  相似文献

In a mobile computing environment, database servers disseminate information to multiple mobile clients via wireless channels. Due to the low bandwidth and low reliability of wireless channels, it is important for a mobile client to cache its frequently accessed database items into its local storage. This improves performance of database queries and improves availability of database items for query processing during disconnection. In this paper, we investigate issues on caching granularity, coherence strategy, and replacement policy of caching mechanisms for a mobile environment utilizing point-to-point communication paradigm.We first illustrate that page-based caching is not suitable in the mobile context due to the lack of locality among database items. We propose three different levels of caching granularity: attribute caching, object caching, and hybrid caching, a hybrid approach of attribute and object caching. Next, we show that existing coherence strategies are inappropriate due to frequent disconnection in a mobile environment, and propose a cache coherence strategy, based on the update patterns of database items. Via a detail simulation model, we examine the performance of various levels of caching granularity with our cache coherence strategy. We observe, in general, that hybrid caching could achieve a better performance. Finally, we propose several cache replacement policies that can adapt to the access patterns of database items. For each given caching granularity, we discover that our replacement policies outperform conventional ones in most situations.  相似文献

The goal of the study was to characterize H2 production in an integrated process utilizing potato homogenate (PH) for dark, fermentative H2 production followed by H2 photoproduction using purple non-sulfur bacteria. Emphasis was placed on (a) examining potato fermentation effluent (FE) as substrate for H2 photoproduction, (b) estimating the yield and efficiency of both processes, and (c) elucidating the physiological factors influencing the integrated system as a whole. In the dark stage maximal production of gas (11.5 L L−1 of the culture) and VFA (350 mM) were observed with a PH concentration of 400 g L−1 of medium, but higher yields (0.05 L g−1 PH; 1.9 mmol g−1 PH) were obtained at PH concentrations of 50–100 g L−1. H2 photoproduction by purple bacteria was inhibited at high FE content. Upon suitable dilution, adequate illumination, and supplementation with Fe/Mg/phosphate nutrients, H2 photoproduction reached 40 L L−1 of non-diluted FE, with a total H2 yield of 5.6 mol mol−1 glucose equivalent for the two-stage integrated process.  相似文献

Nine species of marine fish, including teleost fishes, sharks, and stingrays, and two species of marine mammals (dolphins) collected from Florida coastal waters were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to evaluate biomagnification factors (BMF) of these contaminants in a coastal foodweb. In addition, bottlenose dolphins and bull sharks collected from the Florida coast during the 1990s and the 2000s were analyzed for evaluation of temporal trends in PBDE and PCB levels in coastal ecosystems. Mean concentrations of PBDEs in muscle tissues of teleost fishes ranged from 8.0 ng/g, lipid wt (in silver perch), to 88 ng/g, lipid wt (in hardhead catfish), with an overall mean concentration of 43 +/- 30 ng/g, lipid wt. Mean concentrations of PBDEs in muscle of sharks ranged from 37.8 ng/g, lipid wt, in spiny dogfish to 1630 ng/g, lipid wt, in bull sharks. Mean concentrations of PBDEs in the blubber of bottlenose dolphins and striped dolphins were 1190 +/- 1580 and 660 ng/g, lipid wt, respectively. Tetra-BDE 47 (2,2',4,4'-) was the major congener detected in teleost fishes and dolphin samples, followed by BDE-99, BDE-153, BDE-100, and BDE-154. In contrast, BDE-209 was the most abundant congener in sharks. Concentrations of PBDEs and PCBs in dolphins and sharks were 1-2 orders of magnitude greater than those in lower trophic-level fish species, indicating biomagnification of both of these contaminants in the marine foodweb. Based on the analysis of sharks and dolphins collected over a 10-year period, an exponential increase in the concentrations of PBDEs and PCBs has occurred in these marine predators. The doubling time of PBDE and PCB concentrations was estimated to be 2-3 years for bull sharks and 3-4 years for bottlenose dolphin.  相似文献

We analyze the first wall blanket W/EUROFER configuration for DEMO under steady-state normal operation and off-normal conditions, such as vertical displacement events (VDE) and runaway electrons (RE). The main issue is to find the optimal thickness of the W armor which will prevent tungsten surface from evaporation and melting and, on the other hand, will keep EUROFER below the critical thermal stresses. Under steady-state operation heat transfer into the coolant must remain below the critical heat flux (CHF) to avoid the possible severe degradation of the coolant heat removal capability. From the plasma side it is particularly demanding to keep the bulk plasma contamination during the reactor long operational discharges below the fatal level. The possible damage of the FW materials due to the plasma sputtering erosion is estimated. The minimum thickness of the tungsten amour about 3 mm for W/EUROFER sandwich structure will keep the maximum EUROFER temperature below the critical limit for EUROFER steel under steady-state operation and ITER like cooling conditions.  相似文献
