Human gamma-interferon expression in the mammary gland of transgenic mice

Transgenic mice carrying a hybrid gene consisting of ovine beta-lactoglobulin gene sequences and human gamma-interferon (hIFN-g) cDNA were produced. hIFN-g expression in the mammary gland of two lactating transgenic founder females was found. The concentration of active hIFN-g in the milk was estimated as being ca. 1800 IU/ml. The hIFN-g ability to express in the mammary gland was found in the progeny of transgenic founder male.     

The course and outcome of viral hepatitis B in drug-addicted patients

In this paper, characterization is given of clinical and biochemical features of VH B course against the background of narcomania. Recordable in such patient populations are high percentage of delta hepatitis (14.2%), unusual severity of the intoxication syndrome, protracted course with exacerbations (12.2%) and recurrences (8%), outcome being a chronic hepatitis (14.2%), slower normalization of biochemical indicators, persistently low ratio of AIAT activity in diluted and whole blood sera. The persistence of viral markers in drug addicts discharged from the hospital (68%) is fraught with danger of spreading viral hepatitis of prophylactic measures are not strictly observed.     

Prophylactic effect of enteral feeding preparations during the chemotherapy of oncology patients

Altogether 124 patients were followed up for disseminated breast cancer (82) and hematosarcoma (42). The patients were divided into two groups: the main group was given 500 ml of 20% protein or low-lactose enteral feeding in addition to the hospital diet; the control group received only the hospital diet. Chemotherapy lasted 3 weeks. The patients on chemotherapy received enteral feeding every day throughout the entire treatment period. In the course of treatment, the patients were examined for blood characteristics, size of the tumor and affected lymph nodes, body weight, major metabolism, protein metabolism, vitamin metabolism, osmotic and peroxide resistance of red cells, and liver function. The research program covered more than 150 characteristics. The data obtained were processed by computer. It has been disclosed that inclusion of protein and low-lactose enteral feeding into the diet of cancer patients improves the alimentary status, decreases the leukopenia and thrombocytopenia incidence. It is advisable that specialized milk concentrates (enteral feeding) should be included into the diet of cancer patients as a necessary component of a complex of therapeutic measures used during chemotherapy.     

Synthesis of phosphorus-, zinc-, and chlorine-containing poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Phosphorus-, zinc-, and chlorine-containing oligomer was used as a comonomer including ionic bonds in its molecules in the synthesis of poly(ethylene terephthalate). Phosphorus-, zinc-, and chlorine-containing poly(ethylene terephthalate) including ionic bonds in its main polymer chain was synthesized. With a content of 0.6% P and 1.25% Zn and 0.1% Cl, the resin has the following characteristics: η_rel = 1.407; COOH 39.90 mg equiv KOH/g 10^?6; and mp 255.8°C. Steel 15KhGNMFA for Large Parts of Hydraulic Presses

New steel of grade 15KhGNMFA is suggested for heavy-duty parts of powerful hydraulic presses. Full-scale testing of the steel has shown that preforms fabricated from it have high strength and ductility characteristics, and the level of their impact toughness substantially exceeds that of steel 25GS used earlier for such parts.     

Investigation of the heat treatment processes of resin-bonded refractories in an atmosphere consisting of the products of sublimation and decomposition of the binder

Conclusions Heat treatment of the resin-bonded refractories in an atmosphere consisting of the products of sublimation and decomposition of the binder leads to a significant improvement in the properties of the specimens (in particular, in the coked condition). The increase in the content of the residual carbon, the mechanical strength of the specimens, and their hydration resistance are determined by the heat treatment temperature. The highest levels of the physical and the technological properties are obtained after heat treating the specimens in the 400–600°C range. In this case, the most significant effect is observed in the lime-periclase refractories and the minimum effect is obtained in the resin-periclase refractories.The increased hydration resistance of the resin-bonded refractories containing free calcium oxide (the lime-periclase and the periclase-lime refractories) owes mainly to fixing up of CaO during the heat treatment process and to the formation of the protective calcium carbonate films at the surface of the fired dolomite grains.Translated from Ogneupory, No. 2, pp. 10–13, February, 1992.     

A Study of Effective Thermal Conduction in Lightweight Foam Corundum Refractories

Thermal conduction of lightweight foam corundum refractories is studied by a hot-wire method. Empirical relations for the thermal conductivity as a function of temperature (20 – 1100°C) and porosity (79 – 93%) are derived. The thermal conductivity at higher temperature is less dependent on porosity because of the increased role of radiation in the heat conduction process.
