Visual functions after photorefractive keratectomy

1. 45 myopes (-3.0 to -6.0 D) were examined before and 1 and 6 months after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Visual acuity (VA) was tested using Snellen and logMAR charts. Contrast sensitivity (CS) was measured using a computerized system. 2. Preoperative best corrected VA (BCVA) in myopes was significantly lower in comparison with a control group using logMAR charts only. A reduction of BCVA by both methods at 1. month and its return after 6 months nearly to original values was noted. 3. Significantly lower values of CS were found in patients before PRK compared to the control group. After 1 and 6 months stayed the values on preoperative level.     

Different immunological mechanisms contribute to cartilage destruction in antigen-induced arthritis

Antigen-induced arthritis in guinea pigs was used as a model to investigate the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for cartilage destruction in chronic joint inflammation. The activation of macrophages, their effects on cartilage metabolism, and the development of autoimmunity to cartilage constituents were studied during the progression of arthritis. The results show that in arthritic animals the macrophages are systemically activated, with a peak in the early phase of inflammation. Interleukin 1, produced by the activated cells, suppresses the proteoglycan synthesis in cartilage explants and cultured chondrocytes and increases the proliferation of the cells in vitro. During the progression of arthritis humoral and cell-mediated immune responses to collagen type II and cartilage proteoglycans occur correlating with the severity of arthritis. It is concluded that different immunological mechanisms may be involved in cartilage destruction during antigen-induced arthritis. Mediator-induced metabolic reactions dominate in the early phase, whereas autoimmunity to cartilage might play an essential role in later phases of arthritis.

Quantitative determination of non-defect unstable structures in PVC through selective nucleophilic substitution with C6H5SNa

Summary The nucleophilic substitution with C₆H₅SNa, at -30°C, is compared for five PVC samples with various contents of isotactic triads. The conversion curves consist of a very fast stage followed by a steady one. All the samples are found to behave in the same way except for the content of the structures involved in the fast period. This content is estimated by extrapolating the straight lines of the steady stages to zero time. The obtained values are found to be a linear function of the content of isotactic triads. The results, together with some earlier ones, allow for the content of the labile non-defect structures in PVC to be determined.     

Modified determination of 2-thiobarbituric acid value in fats and oils

Several methods for the determination of TBA-value were compared with a new direct modification (omitting the previous distillation), using 1-butanol as the sole solvent. The absorbance is measured at 530 nm after heating to 95 degrees C for 120 min, and cooling. The effect of variables was tested by the Youdens ruggedness test (reaction time, temperature, cooling, concentration of sample, thiobarbituric acid, water, heavy metals, antioxidants, chelating agents, bubbling with oxygen or nitrogen). The Lambert-Beers law is valid in the absorbance range between 0.05 and 0.8. The repeatability is better than that of the Dzikowskis procedure and comparable with those of more complicated distillation methods. The standard deviation is in a linear relation with the absorbance (range 0.1-1.0). The method was found satisfactory for evaluating lard, cooking fat, soybean, sunflower, and rapeseed oils in the stage of beginning rancidity.
