Approximately 9 months after a legal therapeutic abortion, 188 Canadian women were interviewed. One half were single and the rest were married, separated or divorced. They were matched closely for a number of demographic variables with control women who had not had abortions. Neurotic disturbance in several areas of personality functioning was assessed from questionnaire responses. Out of 27 psychological scales, differences between the abortion and control groups were found on only 3: in general, women who had had abortions were more rebellious than control women, abortion tended to be associated with somewhat greater depression in married women, and single women who had had abortions scored higher on the shallow-affect scale. However, all the personality scores were well within the normal range. Perceived social support was strongly associated with favourable psychological reactions after abortion. Use of contraceptives improved greatly after the abortion, when over 90% of women reported using contraceptives regularly. 相似文献

People prefer a sure gain to a probable larger gain when the two choices are presented from a gain perspective, but a probable larger loss to a sure loss when the objectively identical choices are presented from a loss perspective. Such reversals of preference due to the context of the problem are known as framing effects. In the present study, schema activation and subjects' interpretations of the problems were examined as sources of the framing effects. Results showed that such effects could be eliminated by introducing into a problem a causal schema that provided a rationale for the reciprocal relationship between the gains and the losses. Moreover, when subjects were freed from framing they were consistently risk seeking in decisions about human life, but risk averse in decisions about property. Irrationality in choice behaviors and the ecological implication of framing effects are discussed. 相似文献

To better understand the mode of action of omega 3 fatty acids in cell membranes, human foreskin fibroblasts were grown in serum-free medium supplemented with 50 microM oleic acid linoleic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and the effects on membrane composition, fluorescence polarization and enzyme activities were followed. The cells were enriched with EPA and DHA up to 7 and 13% of total lipids, respectively, of which > 95% was associated with phospholipids. In addition, the concentration of 22:5n-3 increased with both EPA and DHA to 7.5, and 2.1% of the total fatty acids, respectively. When compared to controls (oleic acid), cells treated with DHA showed a decrease in cholesterol, phospholipids, arachidonic acid (AA) and free cholesterol/phospholipid ratio (P < 0.05). In the presence of EPA, only decreases in AA and cholesterol were significant (P < 0.05). Membrane fluidity, assessed by fluorescence anisotropy, was increased 16% in cells enriched with DHA (P < 0.05), but showed no change with EPA or linoleic acid. There was an increase in membrane-associated 5'-nucleotidase (+27%) and adenylate cyclase (+19%) activities (P < 0.05), in DHA-enriched, but not in EPA-enriched cells, when compared with oleate controls. The studies show that incorporation of DHA, but not EPA, into cell membranes of fibroblasts alters membrane biophysical characteristics and function. We suggest that these two major n-3 fatty acids of fish oils have differential effects on cell membranes, and this may be related to the known differences in their physiological effects. 相似文献

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of ionic interactions in the cell surface expression of integrins and the organization of F-actin. Understanding these interactions will allow the development of surfaces for prosthetic purposes that will promote the normal expression of adhesion proteins. METHODS: Hema (hydroxyethylmethacrylate) hydrogels were used to mimic the charges present on extracellular matrix proteins. The surfaces were modified by the addition of amines (N,N-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate; NDAM) or carboxyl moieties (methacrylic acid). The effects of ionic interactions on cellular spreading and on the expression of proteins were examined by modification of the stoichiometrically defined amounts of positive and negative charges on the Hemas. Changes in intracellular pH and the distribution and localization of protein were monitored using fluorescent markers, spectrofluorometry, and confocal laser scanning microscopy, respectively. The immunohistochemical studies were confirmed by flow cytometric analysis. RESULTS: The data indicate that although cells adhered to all the surfaces, the number of cells possessing adhesion receptors is significantly greater on surfaces with amine functionalities. Cell seeding and plating efficiency after 2 hours were identical on all surfaces. The intracellular pH of epithelial cells grown on surfaces containing NDAM, a tertiary amine, was higher than that of cells grown on Hemas containing only methacrylic acid. Lamellipodial extensions and an extensive actin network were present on surfaces containing 5% NDAM. The alpha 6 subunit was localized along the lateral cell membranes. The alpha 2 and 3 subunits were present along cell membranes and at lamellipodial extensions. Cells cultured on surfaces containing only methacrylic acid did not spread. Actin filaments were not detected, and alpha 6 was negligible on these surfaces. CONCLUSIONS: This is a novel approach to understanding cell-substrate interactions, and one that allows quantitative evaluation of the response of cells to defined surfaces. The organization of F-actin is altered by the substrates containing only carboxyl moieties. The distribution of integrin subunits is also altered by the substrate. These results indicate that epithelial cell spreading and protein expression may be regulated by ionic interactions. 相似文献
