The fluid resistance of single micrometre-sized blank and DNA-grafted polystyrene microspheres under shear flow is compared in purified water and dilute λ-DNA solutions by means of optical tweezers experiments with a high spatial (±4 nm) and temporal (±0.2 ms) resolution. The measurement results show that the drag experienced by a colloid in a dilute λ-DNA solution (molecular weight of 48,502 bp per molecule, radius of gyration of 0.5 μm) is significantly decreased if the microsphere bears a grafted DNA brush. This newly discovered drag reduction effect is studied for different parameters, comprising the molecular weight of the grafted DNA molecules (250 bp, 1000 bp and 4000 bp), the concentration of the λ-DNA solution (11, 17 and 23 μg ml?1, all being significantly smaller than the critical entanglement concentration c1), the microsphere core diameter (2 μm, 3 μm and 6 μm) as well as the flow speed of the medium (10–50 μm s?1). The maximum extent of the drag reduction is found to amount to (60 ± 20)% compared to the λ-DNA-induced contribution on the drag acting on blank colloids. We propose a theoretical explanation of this effect based on the combination of the dynamic density functional theory of Rauscher and co-workers [Rauscher M. J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 2010;22:364109] and the stagnation length theory of polymer brushes, as it was established by Kim, Lobaskin et al. [Kim et al. Macromolecules 2008;42(10):3650–3655]. In particular, the solution of the Stokes equation (i.e., the Navier–Stokes equation for creeping flow) for the studied system yields a numerical prediction that is found to be in full accord with our experimental results within measurement uncertainty. 相似文献

Two analyses were conducted to examine gender differences in global self-esteem. In Analysis I, a computerized literature search yielded 216 effect sizes, representing the testing of 97,121 respondents. The overall effect size was 0.21, a small difference favoring males. A significant quadratic effect of age indicated that the largest effect emerged in late adolescence (d?=?0.33). In Analysis II, gender differences were examined using 3 large, nationally representative data sets from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). All of the NCES effect sizes, which collectively summarize the responses of approximately 48,000 young Americans, indicated higher male self-esteem (ds ranged from 0.04 to 0.24). Taken together, the 2 analyses provide evidence that males score higher on standard measures of global self-esteem than females, but the difference is small. In recent years, the use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been shown to be a competitive method for strengthening both the structural and economic performance of concrete. The method has been used for almost a decade, yet – most research undertaken has studied the flexural behavior of strengthened structures, while research on shear strengthening has been limited. The work presented in this paper focuses on CFRP shear strengthening of concrete beams. The theory presented addresses the limitations of the widely used truss model, and a refinement is suggested. A reduction factor to consider the nonuniform strain distribution over the cross section is proposed and strain limitations are prescribed for the principal strain in the concrete instead of the fiber strain, as in previous studies. The derived analytical model is compared to experimental data from tests. Fairly good agreement is found between results from tests and calculated values from theory with regard to both shear-bearing capacity and average fiber utilization. 相似文献

CuantumFuse nano copper material has been used to assemble functional LED test boards and a small camera board with a 48 pad CMOS sensor quad-flat no-lead chip and a 10 in flexible electronics demo. Drop-in replacement of solder, by use of stencil printing and standard surface mount technology equipment, has been demonstrated. Applications in space and commercial systems are currently under consideration. The stable copper-nanoparticle paste has been examined and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy; this has shown that the joints are nanocrystalline but with substantial porosity. Assessment of reliability is expected to be complicated by this and by the effects of thermal and strain-enhanced coarsening of pores. Strength, creep, and fatigue properties were measured and results are discussed with reference to our understanding of solder reliability to assess the potential of this nano-copper based solder alternative. 相似文献

Using ammonium sulfate, three levels of dietary S (.15, .20, and .25%, DM basis) were evaluated in a finishing trial with 108 yearling crossbred heifers (384 kg). The basal diet contained (DM basis) 4% alfalfa hay, 6% sudangrass hay, 74% steam-flaked corn, 4% yellow grease, 6% cane molasses, and 6% protein-mineral supplement. Increasing dietary S decreased ADG (quadratic effect, P < .10), DMI (linear effect, P < .10), feed efficiency (quadratic effect, P < .10), diet NE (quadratic effect, P < .10), and longissimus muscle area (linear effect, P < .05). Six Holstein steers (218 kg) with cannulas in the rumen and proximal duodenum were used to evaluate treatment effects on characteristics of digestion. Treatment effects on ruminal and total tract digestion of OM and N were small (P > .10). However, ruminal digestion of ADF and starch was slightly lower (quadratic effect, P < .10), and postruminal digestion of ADF and starch was correspondingly greater (quadratic effect, P < .05) with supplemental S. Dietary S level did not influence (P > .10) ruminal synthesis of microbial N. Increasing dietary S did not influence (P > .10) ruminal pH or lactic acid. Increasing S decreased molar proportions of acetate (quadratic effect, P < .10) and increased molar proportions of propionate (linear effect, P < .10). We conclude that S in excess of .20% of dietary DM may have detrimental effects on growth performance and dietary NE. The immunity repressor (Rep) of bacteriophage Mu establishes and maintains lysogeny by shutting down transposition functions needed for phage DNA replication. Although Rep is stable in vivo, an altered immunity repressor (Vir) encoded by virulent, trans-dominant Mu mutants is rapidly degraded by Escherichia coli ClpXP protease. Rep and Vir are degraded at approximately the same maximal velocity (Vmax) by ClpXP, but the Km for Rep (3.6 microM) is over 20-fold higher than the Km for Vir (0.15 microM). Rep is also highly resistant to degradation in the presence of DNA whereas Vir is not. Vir increases the rate of Rep degradation by reducing its Km and imparts to Rep ClpXP sensitivity in the presence of DNA. Vir can drive at an accelerated rate the complete degradation of Rep molecules that outnumber Vir by eightfold or more. So long as Vir is present at a concentration of 0.1 microM or higher, Rep is degraded with a Km that is indistinguishable from that of Vir. These characteristics of repressor may be an important means of transducing physiological signals that induce Mu transposition in response to growth conditions or environmental stress, ClpXP hypersensitivity being disseminated among Rep molecules for the induction of Mu transposition. 相似文献

This paper discusses the feasibility of high-frequency nonlinear vibrational control. Such control has the advantage that it does not require state measurement and processing capabilities that are required in conventional feedback control. Bellman et al. (1986) investigated nonlinear systems controlled by linear vibrational controllers and proved that vibrational control is not feasible if the Jacobian matrix has a positive trace. This paper extends previous work to include nonlinear vibrational controllers. A stability criteria is derived for nonlinear systems with nonlinear controllers, and it is shown that a nonlinear vibrational controller can stabilize a system even if the Jacobian matrix has a positive trace 相似文献
