To study age effects in the resolution of idiomatic semantic ambiguity, we focus on decomposability, the extent to which a literal reading of an idiom's words shares meaning with its figurative interpretation. Younger and older adults judged whether decomposable and nondecomposable idioms and nonidioms had a literal interpretation. Older adults were slower at making literality judgments and more sensitive to conflicts between literal and figurative meanings. The results support claims of decompositional analysis of idioms during later processing stages and of obligatory activation of figurative meanings. In vivo host responses to an electrode‐like array of aligned carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) embedded within a biopolymer sheet are reported. This biocompatibility study assesses the suitability of immobilized carbon nanotubes for bionic devices. Inflammatory responses and foreign‐body histiocytic reactions are not substantially elevated when compared to negative controls following 12 weeks implantation. A fibrous capsule isolates the implanted ACNTs from the surrounding muscle tissue. Filamentous nanotube fragments are engulfed by macrophages, and globular debris is incorporated into the fibrous capsule with no further reaction. Scattered leukocytes are observed, adherent to the ACNT surface. These data indicate that there is a minimal local foreign‐body response to immobilized ACNTs, that detached fragments are phagocytosed into an inert material, and that ACNTs do not attract high levels of surface fouling. Collectively, these results suggest that immobilized nanotube structures should be considered for further investigation as bionic components. 相似文献

As the automotive industry becomes increasingly competitive, parts manufacturers are under extreme pressure to improve the quality of their parts, while at the same time reducing costs. The method currently used to detect failures in automotive light assemblies during vibration endurance testing involves manual inspection only after the test is completed. In most cases, this method does not allow the first onset of failure to be determined. Subsequent damage caused by the ongoing test after the initial failure often obliterates the clues to what failed first, thus diminishing the usefulness of the information collected as input to design improvement iterations. An adaptable, reliable, and low-cost real-time monitoring and diagnostic system that would interrupt the testing operation at the first onset of a failure is desired. This paper describes an accelerometer-based and a microphone-based monitoring system for automotive light assembly failure detection during endurance testing. The vibration and acoustic signal analysis methods are also described. Preliminary results from these two systems show a significant difference between healthy and faulty fog light assemblies, which can be detected. This suggests that there is potential to develop these and potentially other measures for use in an adaptable, reliable, and low-cost real-time monitoring and diagnostic system that would interrupt the testing operation at the first onset of a failure. Further testing is planned to determine the sensitivity of the methods used in this study to detect the earliest onset of failure damage during endurance testing of automotive light assemblies. 相似文献
