Fouling Detection in an Optically Accessible Microstructured Heat Exchanger

The application of highly effective microstructured devices in continuous production and industrial environments is frequently prone to fouling. A new method is presented to characterize fouling in these microstructures. Thermal fouling of aqueous solutions containing whey protein were used as a test system. Different fouling effects could be observed and distinguished. Integral fouling indicators, such as thermal fouling resistance and pressure drop, as conventional criteria for the occurrence of fouling were compared with direct local optical observation. Low thermal fouling resistances could be detected.     

Microstructural Investigations of Barium Titanate-Based Material for Base Metal Electrode Ceramic Multilayer Capacitor

The microstructures of BME-X7R ceramics have been investigated by imaging and analytical TEM. By varying the sintering conditions (pressing, sintering temperature and atmosphere), the microstructure changes drastically, and dislocation loops can be observed. These defects most probably are caused by an ordering of oxygen vacancies in the lattice, and the density appears to be correlated to the oxygen partial pressure applied during the reoxidation step. For pressed and unpressed ceramic foils, a model for different sintering behaviors according to liquid-phase assistance is given that is based on a kinetically determined microstructure rather than thermodynamic equilibrium.

Understanding selective oxidations

Functionalizing organic molecules is an important value-creating step throughout the entire chemical value-chain. Oxyfunctionalization of e.g. C-H or C=C bonds is one of the most important functionalization technologies used industrially. The major challenge in this field is the prevention of side reactions and/or the consecutive over-oxidation of the desired products. Despite its importance, a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic chemistry, and the subsequent design of a tailored engineering environment, is often missing. Industrial oxidation processes are indeed to a large extent based on empirical know-how. In this mini-review, we summarize some of our previous work to help to bridge this knowledge gap and elaborate on our ongoing research.

Überlegungen zum Krankheitsbegriff aus strahlentherapeutischer Sicht

Definition of the problem: The concept of disease should be presented under the view of clinical medicine using radiooncology as an example. The interactive dualism, as described by Switankowsky, is introduced as theoretical framework for understanding the nature of disease. According to this theory, the interaction between mind and body plays a central role to treat the patient with dignity and compassion. This is true for radiotherapy, where a holistic understanding of the patient is necessary. Actual analysis of the current clinical literature is made and nevertheless shows a reductionistic concept of disease, which is based mainly on objective criteria from the physician's view. Arguments and conclusions: Considering and applying the interactive dualism physicians can overcome the reductionistic view. The discussion between doctor and patient will get a leading role. Both physician and patient can develop a common concept while discussing the disease, so that according the interactive dualism objective and subjective criteria are considered. Limitations of this new definition need special attention and should be finally described.
