On the interdependency of primary and initial secondary equilibrium paths in sensitivity analysis of elastic structures

The scientific motivation for this paper is lack of clarity about the interdependency of primary and initial secondary equilibrium paths in the frame of sensitivity analysis of elastic structures. The investigation of this interdependency comprises of the following four cases: (1) nonlinear primary path, nonlinear stability problem, (2) linear primary path, nonlinear stability problem, (3) nonlinear primary path, linear stability problem, and (4) linear primary path, linear stability problem. The consistently linearized eigenproblem is used for differentiation of two classes of nonlinear stability problems with markedly different characteristics of both the prebuckling and the postbuckling behavior. For one of them, e.g. zero-stiffness postbuckling is impossible. For the other one, which is restricted to a prebuckling regime with axial deformations only, sensitivity analysis of the initial postbuckling behavior either exhibits its continuous improvement or its continuous deterioration, depending on whether the bifurcation point diverges from or converges to the snap-through point. In other words, a monotonic variation of the design parameter cannot result in a non-monotonic change of the initial postbuckling behavior. The practical motivation for this work is to explore the mechanical reasons for qualitatively different modes of transition from imperfection sensitivity to insensitivity in the course of sensitivity analysis for the purpose of improving the postbuckling behavior of structures by means of minor design changes. Results from a numerical investigation corroborate the theoretical findings.     

Zur Problematik der selektiven Erfassung von PSP-Toxinen aus Muscheln

Zusammenfassung Die Messung der PSP-Belastung (paralytic shellfish poisoning) von Schalentieren erfolgt vor allem mit Hilfe des Maus-Biotestes. Um PSP-Toxine sowohl qualitativ als auch quantitativ besser bestimmen zu können, wurden chromatographische Verfahren mit Fluorescenzdetektion entwickelt. Diese HPLC-Methoden sowie die Kopplung HPLC/MS gelangten zum Einsatz, um in spanischen Muschelkonserven ein neben Saxitoxin vermutetes zweites PSP-Toxin nachzuweisen. Es zeigte sich, daß in den 1986 in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wegen zu hoher PSP-Konzentrationen beanstandeten Muschelkonserven vor allem Decarbamoyl-Saxitoxin enthalten war.

The problem of the selective determination of PSP-toxins in mussels

Summary Levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins in shellfish are routinely determined by mouse bioassay: In order to improve the qualitative and quantitative determination of PSP toxins, Chromatographic techniques with fluorescence detection have been developed. These HPLC methods and the HPLC/MS coupling were used to determine a second PSP toxin which was found, in addition to saxitoxin, in canned Spanish mussels. These canned mussels were rejected in 1986 by the German food control because PSP concentrations were too high. It has been shown that these samples contained mainly dc-saxitoxin.

Discerning nonstationarity from nonlinearity in seizure-free and preseizure EEG recordings from epilepsy patients

A number of recent studies indicate that nonlinear electroencephalogram (EEG) analyses allow to define a state predictive of an impending epileptic seizure. In this paper, we combine a method for detecting nonlinear determinism with a novel test for stationarity to characterize EEG recordings from both the seizure-free interval and the preseizure phase. We discuss differences between these periods, particularly an increased occurrence of stationary, nonlinear segments prior to seizures. These differences seem most prominent for recording sites within the seizure-generating area and for EEG segments less than one minute's length.     

245 GHz接收机芯片片外测试与实验

为了实现太赫兹气体频谱分析传感器,对245 GHz次谐波接收机芯片的片外测试展开研究。建立了245 GHz次谐波接收机片外测试系统以及基于245 GHz接收机芯片及发射机芯片的气体频谱分析传感器片外展示测试系统,对245 GHz次谐波接收机芯片转换增益和带宽进行测试。片外测试系统得到15 dB转换增益和15 GHz带宽;片外展示测试系统得到9 dB转换增益和16 GHz带宽。片外测试系统和片外展示测试系统结果基本吻合。在片外展示测试系统中加入气腔,即构成气体频谱分析传感器。与现有同类型传感器相比,本文的次谐波接收机具有高增益、高带宽、集成本地振荡信号、低功耗等优势,非常适用于消费电子领域小体积的智能气体频谱分析传感器。     

Functionalized Graphene as Extracellular Matrix Mimics: Toward Well‐Defined 2D Nanomaterials for Multivalent Virus Interactions

Polysulfated nanomaterials that mimic the extracellular cell matrix are of great interest for their potential to modulate cellular responses and to bind and neutralize pathogens. However, control over the density of active functional groups on such biomimetics is essential for efficient interactions, and this remains a challenge. In this regard, producing polysulfated graphene derivatives with control over their functionality is an intriguing accomplishment in order to obtain highly effective 2D platforms for pathogen interactions. Here, a facile and efficient method for the controlled attachment of a heparin sulfate mimic on the surface of graphene is reported. Dichlorotriazine groups are conjugated to the surface of graphene by a one‐pot [2+1] nitrene cycloaddition reaction at ambient conditions, providing derivatives with defined functionality. Consecutive step by step conjugation of hyperbranched polyglycerol to the dichlorotriazine groups and eventual conversion to the polyglycerol sulfate result in the graphene based heparin biomimetics. Scanning force microscopy, cryo‐transmission electron microscopy, and in vitro bioassays reveal strong interactions between the functionalized graphene (thoroughly covered by a sulfated polymer) and vesicular stomatitis virus. Infection experiments with highly sulfated versions of graphene drastically promote the infection process, leading to higher viral titers compared to nonsulfated analogues.     

A Soft,Fast and Versatile Electrohydraulic Gripper with Capacitive Object Size Detection

Soft robotic grippers achieve increased versatility and reduced complexity through intelligence embodied in their flexible and conformal structures. The most widely used soft grippers are pneumatically driven; they are simple and effective but require bulky air compressors that limit their application space and external sensors or computationally expensive vision systems for pick verification. In this study, a multi-material architecture for self-sensing electrohydraulic bending actuators is presented that enables a new class of highly versatile and reconfigurable soft grippers that are electrically driven and feature capacitive pick verification and object size detection. These electrohydraulic grippers are fast (step input results in finger closure in 50 ms), draw low power (6.5 mW per finger to hold grasp), and can pick a wide variety of objects with simple binary electrical control. Integrated high-voltage driving electronics are presented that greatly increase the application space of the grippers and make them readily compatible with commercially available robotic arms.
