Many models of spoken word recognition posit the existence of lexical and sublexical representations, with excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms used to affect the activation levels of such representations. Bottom-up evidence provides excitatory input, and inhibition from phonetically similar representations leads to lexical competition. In such a system, long words should produce stronger lexical activation than short words, for 2 reasons: Long words provide more bottom-up evidence than short words, and short words are subject to greater inhibition due to the existence of more similar words. Four experiments provide evidence for this view. In addition, reaction-time-based partitioning of the data shows that long words generate greater activation that is available both earlier and for a longer time than is the case for short words. As a result, lexical influences on phoneme identification are extremely robust for long words but are quite fragile and condition-dependent for short words. A study was carried out using simulation to investigate driver responses to lineside signals and signs at various approach
speeds. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out whether train speed would significantly affect signal/sign reading;
(2) to examine at which point certain types of signs or signals could be detected or recognised, and (3) to determine a speed
cut-off level above which certain types of signs or signals are no longer recognisable or detectable. Fifty-seven train drivers
from 12 Train Operating Companies in the UK participated in the trials. Twenty different types of lineside signs and ten types
of signals were tested under six different approach speeds ranging from 100 to 350 km/h (62–218 mph). Driver performance measures
were ‘time remaining to the signal/sign’ at the point of detection or recognition, and reading error rate. The results showed
a significant influence of train speed on driver responses to lineside signals/signs and demonstrated a non-linear relationship
between driver responses to signals/signs and approach speed. This has been used to estimate a maximum approach speed limit
within which a specific signal or sign can be correctly detected or recognised. The findings and implications of the study

Effect of the Twisting Motion on the Nonunifornities of Transmyocardial Fiber Mechanics and Energy Demand A Theoretical Study 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The contraction of the left ventricle (LV) is manifested by a distribution of strains and strain rates throughout the muscle thickness. Using a nested shell spheroidal model of the LV, which accounts for a fiber angle distribution from + 60°at the endocardium to ?60° at the epicardium, and the radial electrical activation pattern from the endocardium to the epicardium, it can be shown that endocardial layers undergo higher strains than the epicardial layers throughout the cardiac cycle, and higher length changes characterize the endocardial sarcomeres relative to the epicardial sarcomeres. However, the calculated nonuniformities in the sarcomeres' shortening are significantly moderated when the physiological twisting motion of the LV around the longitudinal axis is accounted for. Thus, the twisting motion of the heart is a basic mechanism by which the sarcomere function is maintained within its physiological range. 相似文献

In this paper, the test results of liquid injection impact on the performance of new alternative refrigerant mixtures such as: R-410A, R-507, R-407C and R-404A are discussed, analysed and presented. The test results were obtained using an air-source heat pump set-up with enhanced surface tubing under various liquid injection ratios. Performance tests were conducted according to the ARI/ASHRAE standards. The performance data demonstrated that as liquid injection ratio increases, compressor head pressure and discharge temperature decrease. This has a positive effect in protecting the compressor. The effect of liquid injection on mixture behaviour varies from one mixture to another depending upon the mixture's composition. Skim and whole milk powders were manufactured at lab scale by spray freeze drying (SFD), using liquid nitrogen as the cryogen. The polydispersity of droplet/particle sizes was limited using an encapsulator nozzle to atomize the feed. Particle morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Samples were compared with equivalent spray-dried powders in tests of wettability and dissolution in water. The spray freeze-dried powders were found to be highly porous, with a uniform structure of pores throughout the entire particles. When tested in water, SFD skim milk powders wetted roughly three times as fast as industrially spray-dried agglomerated skim milk powders and were observed to dissolve rapidly by breaking down into smaller particles. 相似文献
