Li(+) influx by bovine chromaffin cells, obtained from bovine adrenal medulla, was studied in intact cell suspensions using (7)Li NMR spectroscopy with the shift reagent [Tm(HDOTP)](4-). The influx rate constants, k(i), were determined in the absence and in the presence of two Na(+) membrane transport inhibitors. The values obtained indicate that both voltage sensitive Na(+) channels and (Na(+)/K(+))-ATPase play an important role in Li(+) uptake by these cells. (7)Li NMR T(1) and T(2) relaxation times for intracellular Li(+) in bovine chromaffin cells provided a T(1)/T(2) ratio of 305, showing that Li(+) is highly, immobilized due to strong binding to intracellular structures. Using fluorescence spectroscopy and the Mg(2+) fluorescent probe, furaptra, the free intracellular Mg(2+) concentration in the bovine chromaffin cells incubated with 15 mM LiCl was found to increase by about mM after the intracellular Li(+) concentration reached a steady state. Therefore, once inside the cell, Li(+) is able to displace Mg(2+) from its binding sites.  相似文献

In mullite–alumina composite precursors, interaction between the silica matrix and the fine -alumina texture strongly influences the precursor phase transformation, the nucleation and the crystal geometry both of the mullite and of the -alumina. The mullite–alumina composite precursor calcined at 1000 °C has a layered structure probably derived from the layered texture of the -alumina. The phase transition of this layered texture is retarded by the presence of the silica matrix and a metastable mullite phase is formed before nucleation of -alumina. By leaching away the silica matrix, the remaining layered texture is readily transformed into very fine, thin -alumina platelets by calcination at 1000 °C. This seems to be one reason for the appearance of elongated mullite grains in a pure mullite matrix and the platelet shaped -alumina grains in the mullite–alumina composite prepared from diphasic precursors. © 1998 Chapman & Hall  相似文献

Modern large-scale grid computing systems for processing advanced science and engineering applications rely on geographically distributed clusters. In such highly distributed environments, estimating the available bandwidth between clusters is a key issue for efficient task scheduling. We analyze the performance of two well known available bandwidth estimation tools, pathload and abget, with the aim of using them in grid environments. Differently than previous investigations (Jain et al., ; Shriram et al., in Passive and active network measurement: 6th international workshop, PAM 2005. Springer, Berlin, 2005), our experiments consider a series of relevant metrics such as accuracy of the estimation, convergence time, degree of intrusion in the grid links, and ability to handle multiple simultaneous estimations. No previous work has analyzed the use of available bandwidth tools for the derivation of efficient grid scheduling.  相似文献

Currently, the design of aesthetic products is a process that requires a set of activities where digital models and physical mockups play a key role. Typically, these are modified (and built) several times before reaching the desired design, increasing the development time and, consequently, the final product cost. In this paper, we present an innovative design environment for computer-aided design (CAD) surface analysis. Our system relies on a direct visuo-haptic display system, which enables users to visualize models using a stereoscopic view, and allows the evaluation of sectional curves using touch. Profile curves are rendered using an haptic device that deforms a plastic strip, thanks to a set of actuators, to reproduce the curvature of the shape co-located with the virtual model. By touching the strip, users are able to evaluate shape characteristics, such as curvature or discontinuities (rendered using sound), and to assess the surface quality. We believe that future computer-aided systems (CAS)/CAD systems based on our approach will contribute in improving the design process at industrial level. Moreover, these will allow companies to reduce the product development time by reducing the number of physical mockups necessary for the product design evaluation and by increasing the quality of the final product, allowing a wider exploration and comparative evaluation of alternatives in the given time.  相似文献

A homogeneous set is a non-trivial module of a graph, i.e. a non-empty, non-unitary, proper subset of a graph's vertices such that all its elements present exactly the same outer neighborhood. Given two graphs the Homogeneous Set Sandwich Problem (HSSP) asks whether there exists a sandwich graph which has a homogeneous set. In 2001 Tang et al. published an all-fast algorithm which was recently proven wrong, so that the HSSP's known upper bound would have been reset thereafter at the former determined by Cerioli et al. in 1998. We present, notwithstanding, new deterministic algorithms which have it established at We give as well two even faster randomized algorithms, whose simplicity might lend them didactic usefulness. We believe that, besides providing efficient easy-to-implement procedures to solve it, the study of these new approaches allows a fairly thorough understanding of the problem.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To identify patients with lymphoma at risk for tumor lysis after chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The case records of 102 patients receiving combination chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (intermediate to high-grade histology) were reviewed. Patients were considered to have "laboratory tumor lysis" if two of the following metabolic changes occurred within 4 days of treatment: a 25% increase in the serum phosphate, potassium, uric acid, or urea nitrogen concentrations, or a 25% decline in the serum calcium concentration. "Clinical tumor lysis" was defined as laboratory tumor lysis plus one of the following: a serum potassium level greater than 6 mmol/L, a creatinine level greater than 221 mumol/L, or a calcium level less than 1.5 mmol/L, the development of a life-threatening arrhythmia, or sudden death. RESULTS: Laboratory tumor lysis occurred in 42% of patients and clinical tumor lysis in 6%. There was no statistical difference in the frequency of either tumor lysis syndrome among lymphoma subgroups. Clinical tumor lysis occurred more frequently in patients with pretreatment renal insufficiency (serum creatinine level greater than 132 mumol/L) than in patients with normal renal function (36% versus 2%; p = 0.01). The development of azotemia correlated with high pretreatment serum lactate dehydrogenase concentrations (p < 0.01; r2 = 0.11). CONCLUSION: Clinically significant tumor lysis is a rare occurrence in patients with lymphoma when they are receiving allopurinol. However, tumor lysis can occur in patients with all types of moderate to high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Patients with a high serum lactate dehydrogenase level or renal insufficiency are at increased risk for metabolic complications after chemotherapy and should be closely monitored.  相似文献

Stem cells are present in the adult tissues of most diverse species. Bone marrow is recognized to be the most exploited site to obtain stem cells and cell progenitors. The objective of the present study was to characterize hematopoietic progenitor (HP) morphology and analyze the performance of adherent cell progenitors (ACPs) cultivated in vitro from black‐rumped agouti bone marrow (Dasyprocta prymnolopha). Bone marrow aspirates were obtained from tibia crest and used to prepare histological slides and identify cell morphology. Cells were also scattered on culture plates for later isolation, expansion, and quantification. Smears obtained from bone marrow demonstrated HPs at different stages of maturity. In culture, these cells showed fibroblastoid morphology and a strong tendency to form colonies, demonstrated by the presence of cell aggregates, cytoplasmic elongations lying side by side. An 80% cell confluence was observed at 18 days in culture and progressive reduction in the percentage of nonadherent mononuclear cells. After eight passes, a mean cell viability of 96.07% was observed, from a pool of 1.6 × 107 cells (ACP). Thirteen 25‐cm2 culture bottles were trypsinized, resuspended in freezing medium, stored in 14 criotubes at a concentration of 1 × 106 cells per milliliter, and placed in liquid nitrogen at ?196°C. Agouti bone marrow demonstrated high plasticity, moreover different HP lines, and a population of adherent cells demonstrated morphology similar to mesenchymal stem cells in culture. Microsc. Res. Films of neat and plasticized biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrices containing anionic conjugated polyelectrolytes, poly[9,9‐bis(4‐phenoxybutylsulfonate)]fluorene‐2,7‐diyl‐alt‐arylenes, with 1,4‐phenylene and 4,4″‐p‐terphenylene, respectively, as arylene groups or a neutral poly(9,9‐dialkylfluorene) for comparison were prepared by solution casting. These films were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. In addition, the effects of plasticizer on the thermal properties and the oxygen permeability of the PLA films were measured through the oxygen transmission rate. Results show that it is possible to obtain thin, optically transparent and luminescent films with potential in oxygen sensing, exhibiting good thermal and photochemical stability. At high polyelectrolyte content, evidence is found for phase separation and aggregate formation and it is no longer possible to obtain completely homogeneous films. The possibility of incorporating the cationic metal complex tris(2,2′‐bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) into plasticized PLA films containing conjugated polyelectrolytes for dual‐wavelength ratiometric luminescence sensing is also discussed.
