Studies of equipment response to low energy, low velocity, high amplitude and high frequency seismic events

The Leroy, Ohio earthquake occurred on January 31, 1986, with an estimated M_big magnitude of 5.0. Two power plants are located within 20 km of the epicenter area. This event was recorded at one of the two power plants. The recorded data were used to confirm the mathematical model and damping values used in design. The recorded event had high frequency, high acceleration, but low velocity and small displacement. The calculated response spectra from the records are well enveloped by the power plant design response spectra except around the 20 Hz region. Power plant equipment and structures were inspected and no earthquake induced damage was reported. Conservative analytical examination of the passive and the potentially most sensitive active safety related equipment revealed adequate margins against design allowables.Appendix A of Title 10, Part 100 of Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR 100) requires plant shutdown for inspection in case of Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE) exceedance. The experience gained from the January 31, 1986, Leroy, Ohio earthquake is that plants should continue operating in case of spectra exceedance that are only in the high frequency region as was the case at Perry. As a lower bound guideline, if recorded earthquake duration is less than one second and the recorded maximum velocity and displacement at the foundation level are equal to or less than 2.54 cm/s and 0.2 cm respectively, based on the Perry experience the plant should continue to operate. At this level of earthquake motions, the amount of energy transferred to plant structures, systems and components is considered non-damaging to engineered items. These lower bound guidelines could be raised after additional analysis.

Reports an error in the original article by Walter M. Baker, Curt A. Sandman, and Harold B. Pepinsky (Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1975, Vol. 84, No. 5, 539-544). On page 542 Figures 2 and 3 should be reversed in order to appear with their correct captions. (The following abstract of this article originally appeared in record 1975-31101-001.) 20 undergraduates discussed a neutral topic and an affect-arousing topic. 10 Ss were allotted a 5-min rehearsal, whereas the remainder were given only 30 sec of rehearsal time prior to their verbal presentations. The endosomatic galvanic skin potential and heart rate were recorded for all Ss during the periods of rehearsal, speech, and immediately following the speech period. Results indicate (a) significant differences between responses to an affective topic and a neutral topic, (b) a significantly different number of words elicited by an affective topic vs a neutral topic, and (c) definite physiological patterns associated with the length of the Ss' speech. Artifactual seven-day cycles in spontaneous activity in wild rodents and squirrel monkeys.

Found 7-day cycles in spontaneous activity in wild animals (recently trapped Norway rats, chipmunks, ground squirrels, and squirrel monkeys) but not in tame domesticated animals (laboratory Norway rats and hamsters). This cycle turned out to be a function of emotional reaction of the wild animals to hitherto overlooked slight differences in activities of relevant human beings between weekdays and weekends. Elimination of ability of wild animals to react to slight environment differences by blinding or deafening abolished the 7-day cycles. Recovery of polluted lakes. a swedish research program on the effects of advanced waste water treatment and sewage diversion

In order to elucidate the effects of the effluents from advanced wastewater treatment plants for phosphorus removal, the National Swedish Environment Protection Board during 1972 started a program for analysing the conditions in a number of different recipient lakes. This study of recovery of polluted lakes also includes some recipient lakes from which sewage effluent will be completely diverted. This paper presents the program, some new methods used and the treatment plants and recipient lakes involved. The project. including 18 lakes and 15 sewage treatment plants, is running in cooperation with 13 Provincial Governments and 16 Municipalities. The efficiency of the sewage treatment plants, is continuously monitored by a new method called Minitest, and the nutrient loadings from these plants as well as from other sources are calculated.As the water quality of many recipient lakes showed great variations during the vegetation period (see Fig. 2), a need for a frequent sampling exists in these lakes.In order to simplify the sampling procedure sampling on the shore (after pumping water from the sampling point) has been introduced. Data obtained after analysing samples taken from a boat and samples from the same area taken on the shore after pumping through a 600 m plastic tube showed good agreement (see Table 2).The lake water samples are preserved by freezing, Analyses after rapid thawing showed that this method can be used also when determining from cell material easily leaking ions such as PO₄, NO₃ etc. (see Tables 3 and 4).The sewage treatment plants, the recipient lakes and some background data are presented in Tables 5 and 6. The water quality of the lakes is illustrated with the correlation between chlorophyll A and suspended solids (Fig. 3). The correlation coefficient = + 0–88. The first sign of lake recovery has been observed after an 85 per cent reduction of the waste phosphorus load. Post-precipitation (A1-sulphate) decreased the yearly load from 2000 kg P to 300 kg, which gave a 50 per cent reduction of the P content of the recipient water. Also the chlorophyll values decreased (Table 7).The role of nitrogen and phosphorus as algal growth limiting nutrients has been studied by using an algal assay procedure. N limited the growth of Selenastrum capricornutum in of the samples. In filtered lake water P was the growth limiting nutrient at total-P values below 0–05 mg 1⁻¹. Above 0·1 mg P 1⁻¹ N played the principal role. Between these values the growth was primarily limited by P or N or chelating agents (Fig. 4).

"Biosyntonic" therapy: Modification of an operant conditioning approach to pedophilia.

Introduces "biosyntonic" therapy, a modified operant conditioning approach for treating sexual behavior problems. Following physiological diagnosis, a male 32-yr-old child molester was successfully taught to alter his inappropriate physiological arousal to prepubescent females without disrupting his arousal to adult females. An extremely elevated heart rate response to pictures of semiclothed female children was eliminated by the administration of electric shock. In addition to eliminating his child molesting, the procedures also improved the correspondence between his physiological and verbal response patterns and decreased his anxiety. 2,2′-OXO-1, 1 ′-azobenzene A microbially transformed allelochemical from 2,3-Benzoxazolinone: I

2,2-Oxo-1,1 -azobenzene (AZOB), a compound with strong herbicidal activity, was isolated and characterized from a soil supplemented with 2,3-benzoxazolinone (BOA). A parallel experiment with 6-methoxy-2,3-benzoxazolinone (MBOA) yielded AZOB as well as its mono-(MAZOB) and dimethoxy-(DIMAZOB) derivatives. These compounds were produced only in the presence of soil microorganisms, via possible intermediates, I and II, which may dimerize or react with the parent molecule to form the final products. In the case of MBOA, it was shown that demethoxylation precedes the oxidation step. Although BOA and 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4(2H)-benzoxazin-3-one (DIBOA) were leached out of rye residues, there were no detectable amounts of the biotransformation products in the soil. When BOA was mixed with soil and rye residue, either under field conditions or in vitro, AZOB was detected. Levels of free BOA in the soil were greatly reduced by incubation with rye residue. AZOB was more toxic to curly cress (Lepidium sativum L.) and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crusgatti L.) than either DIBOA or BOA.Journal Article No. 12943 of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station.     

Continuous biohydrogen production from liquid swine manure supplemented with glucose using an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor

Liquid swine manure supplemented with glucose (10 g/L) was used as substrate for hydrogen production using an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor at 37 ± 1 °C and pH 5.0 under different hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Decreasing HRT from 24 to 8 h caused an increasing hydrogen production rate from 0.05 to 0.15 L/h/L. Production rates of both total biogas and hydrogen were linearly correlated to HRT with R² being 0.993 and 0.997, respectively. The hydrogen yield ranged between 1.18 and 1.63 mol-H₂/mol glucose and the 12 h HRT was preferred for high production rate and efficient yield. For all the five HRTs examined, the glucose utilization efficiency was over 98%. The biogas mainly consisted of carbon dioxide and hydrogen (up to 43%) with no methane detected throughout the experiment. Ethanol and organic acids were the major aqueous metabolites produced during fermentation, with acetic acid accounting for 56–58%. The hydrogen yield was found to be related to the acetate/butyrate ratio.
