We describe the design and implementation of a high-data-rate high-capacity digital holographic storage disk system. Various system design trade-offs that affect density and data-rate performance are described and analyzed. In the demonstration system that we describe, high-density holographic recording is achieved by use of high-resolution short-focal-length optics and correlation shift multiplexing in photopolymer disk media. Holographic channel decoding at a 1-Gbit/s data rate is performed by custom-built electronic hardware. A benchmark sustained optical data-transfer rate of 10 Gbits/s has been successfully demonstrated.  相似文献

Seventy five pregnancies where the presence of antepartum meconium was detected by transabdominal amniocentesis, were compared with 224 cases showing clear amniotic fluid (A.F.). The statistical differences were analized in terms of data of anamnesis, diseases complicating pregnancy, gestational age, fetal maturity diagnosis from the A.F. study, oxytocin test, labor characteristics, perinatal mortality and neurologic morbidity during the first nine months of life. The results suggest that the presence of antepartum meconium implies an increase in fetal risk, demanding an adequate analysis of the obstetric solutions, which is discussed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A major factor influencing tobacco use is its price. Fiscal policies on tobacco are a key ingredient of any comprehensive control strategy, as they can be used to raise prices. The European Union (EU) developed directives to ensure some harmonisation of the fiscal pressure on tobacco across its member states. OBJECTIVES: To provide a simple comparison of tobacco prices in the EU, adjusting for the purchasing power of each currency. DESIGN: For price comparisons, a 20 units pack of Marlboro was the reference product, and data refer to April 2000. Purchasing power parities (PPP) for each member state currency have been compiled. These are currency conversion rates, which convert to a common currency and equalise the purchasing power of different currencies. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Nominal prices of a Marlboro pack for each member state, and a price index, estimated taking as reference the EU mean. Adjusted prices and an adjusted price index have been estimated using PPP. RESULTS: Nominal prices show wide variation, with the cheapest pack in Portugal (59) and the most expensive in the UK (196); the range of variation is three-fold. However, PPP adjusted prices reveal a different distribution. In three countries adjusted prices are outliers, but all other countries make two clusters, one around the average EU index of 100, the other around a lower value of 85. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that fiscal harmonisation policies in the EU do not have an even effect at reducing availability by its impact in price.  相似文献

Airborne laser scanning (ALS) is a remote-sensing technique that provides scale-accurate 3D models consisting of dense point clouds with x, y planimetric coordinates and altitude z. Using ALS, very high-resolution (VHR) digital surface models (DSMs) have been widely used for commercial and scientific applications since the early 1990s. Although there is widespread usage, there has been little comprehensive investigation of quality control for ALS DSMs in the literature, as most studies have been limited to assessing point-based vertical accuracy. This article is dedicated to investigating the quality of ALS DSMs for different land classes using statistical and visual approaches based on absolute and relative vertical accuracy metrics. Rather than a limited number of ground control points (GCP), the model-to-model-based approach is applied and DSMs derived from terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) point clouds that have around 5 mm absolute and 3 mm relative geolocation accuracy were used as the reference data for comparison. The results demonstrate that in open, grass, and building land classes, the ALS DSMs reached both standard deviation (σ) and normalized median absolute deviation (NMAD) of 3–5 cm after the elimination of any systematic biases. This result sufficiently satisfies the vertical accuracy requirements for 1/1000-scale topographic maps determined by National Digital Elevation Program (NDEP) specifications. In tall vegetation, a higher number of discrepancies larger than 0.5 m exist, reversing the relation between σ and NMAD. These vegetation errors also do not appear to be normally distributed. As an additional investigation, the performance of ALS DEMs under dense high-vegetation areas was assessed. These under-canopy ALS DEMs, created using only classified ground returns, offer both σ and NMAD of 12–14 cm, a performance level that is difficult to achieve under-canopy using photogrammetric techniques.  相似文献

In this paper, an active fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed in the case of actuator faults. In particular, the general idea of integrating fault identification and control schemes, which takes into account the fault estimation error is first presented in a linear context. As a result, the so-called separation principle for the controller and the fault identification scheme is developed. Subsequently, the proposed approach is extended to a class of non-linear systems. Similarly to the linear case, it is proven that using a suitable control strategy and a faulty identification scheme it is possible to obtain an integrated fault-tolerant control framework, which takes into account the fault identification error. As a result, a non-linear counterpart of the above-mentioned separation principle is developed. Finally, the last part of the paper shows the application results obtained using a twin-rotor system that confirm the high performance of the proposed approach.  相似文献

Large-scale systems increasingly exhibit a differential between intra-chip and inter-chip communication performance especially in hybrid systems using accelerators. Processor-cores on the same socket are able to communicate at lower latencies, and with higher bandwidths, than cores on different sockets either within the same node or between nodes. A key challenge is to efficiently use this communication hierarchy and hence optimize performance. We consider here the class of applications that contains wave-front processing. In these applications data can only be processed after their upstream neighbors have been processed. Similar dependencies result between processors in which communication is required to pass boundary data downstream and whose cost is typically impacted by the slowest communication channel in use. In this work we develop a novel hierarchical wave-front approach that reduces the use of slower communications in the hierarchy but at the cost of additional steps in the parallel computation and higher use of on-chip communications. This tradeoff is explored using a performance model. An implementation using the reverse-acceleration programming model on the petascale Roadrunner system demonstrates a 27% performance improvement at full system-scale on a kernel application. The approach is generally applicable to large-scale multi-core and accelerated systems where a differential in communication performance exists.  相似文献

With the spread of systems approaches to biological research, there is increasing demand for methods and tools capable of extracting quantitative measurements of biological samples from individual and time-based sequences of microscope images. To this end, we have developed a software tool for tissue level segmentation and automatic tracking of a network of cells in confocal images of the roots of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The tool implements a novel hybrid technique, which is a combination of the recently developed Network Snakes technique and MCMC-based particle filters and incorporates automatic initialisation of the network snakes. A novel method of evaluation of network-structured multi-target tracking is also presented, and is used to evaluate the developed tracking framework for accuracy and robustness against several timelapse sequences of Arabidopsis roots. Evaluation results are presented, along with a comparison between the results of the component techniques and the hybrid approach. The results show that the hybrid approach performed consistently well at all levels of complexity and better than the component methods alone.  相似文献

Photovoltaics is already a billion dollar industry. It is experiencing rapid growth as concerns over fuel supplies and carbon emissions mean that governments and individuals are increasingly prepared to ignore its current high costs. It will become truly mainstream when its costs are comparable to other energy sources. At the moment, it is around four times too expensive for competitive commercial production. Three generations of photovoltaics have been envisaged that will take solar power into the mainstream. Currently, photovoltaic production is 90% first-generation and is based on silicon wafers. These devices are reliable and durable, but half of the cost is the silicon wafer and efficiencies are limited to around 20%. A second generation of solar cells would use cheap semiconductor thin films deposited on low-cost substrates to produce devices of slightly lower efficiency. A number of thin-film device technologies account for around 5–6% of the current market. As second-generation technology reduces the cost of active material, the substrate will eventually be the cost limit and higher efficiency will be needed to maintain the cost-reduction trend. Third-generation devices will use new technologies to produce high-efficiency devices. Advances in nanotechnology, photonics, optical metamaterials, plasmonics and semiconducting polymer sciences offer the prospect of cost-competitive photovoltaics. It is reasonable to expect that cost reductions, a move to second-generation technologies and the implementation of new technologies and third-generation concepts can lead to fully cost-competitive solar energy in 10–15 years.  相似文献
