Twenty-nine schizophrenic outpatients provided speech samples on affectively positive and negative topics. These samples were assessed for several different types of communication failures by using the Communication Disturbances Index. Frequencies of overinclusive references, ambiguous word meanings, and ambiguous referents increased in the affectively negative condition; frequencies of missing referents and instances of syntactic unclarity did not change across affective conditions. Degree of overall affective reactivity of speech was associated with severity of the core positive schizophrenic syndrome. These findings support the idea that different types of schizophrenic communication disturbances are associated with different underlying pathophysiological processes, that some are more reactive to affect than others, and that affective reactivity of these symptoms is associated with the positive schizophrenic process. Manic (n?=?22) and schizophrenic (n?=?28) patients were examined with clinical and linguistic measures of language performance at an acute admission and at a follow-up. It was found that the frequency of incompetent references and the severity of negative thought disorder were stable independent traits of schizophrenics. Furthermore, low levels of verbal productivity, indexed both clinically and linguistically, predicted the likelihood that schizophrenic subjects would be psychotic at follow-up. The language performance of manic patients was not temporally stable, although high levels of reference failures at index predicted psychosis at follow-up. These results are evaluated in terms of their implications for differentiating state-specific aspects of speech competence from potential vulnerability markers in these two types of patients. The endothelin (ET) receptor that mediates vasoconstriction of the isolated rabbit pulmonary resistance artery was characterized using selective ET receptor agonists and antagonists. We also examined changes in ET-induced vasoconstriction brought about by left ventricular dysfunction using the rabbit coronary ligation model. The rank order of potency for contraction was sarafotoxin S6c (S6c) > ET-1 = ET-3, which is characteristic of an ETB-like receptor. The combined ETA/ETB receptor antagonist SB209670 (1 microM) antagonized responses to ET-1 and S6c with estimated pKb values of 6.8 +/- 0.2 and 7.8 +/- 0.2, respectively. BQ788 (1 microM) antagonized responses to S6c and ET-3 (but not ET-1) with estimated pKb values of 7.1 +/- 0.2 and 6.6 +/- 0.1, respectively. The ETA receptor antagonist FR139317 (1 microM), either alone or in combination with BQ788, did not inhibit responses to ET-1. The profile of the ET-1 response was not altered by left ventricular dysfunction. In control rabbits, the inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (100 microM) had no significant effect on the potency of either ET-1 or S6c. In the coronary-ligated rabbits, however, it significantly increased the potency (10-15-fold) of both ET-1 and S6c. These results suggest that the ET receptor that mediates contraction in rabbit pulmonary resistance arteries has the characteristics of an ETB-like receptor. The responses to ET-1 are not altered by LVD but may be modified by increased release of nitric oxide.  相似文献

Ambient sampling was conducted in Riverside, California during the 2005 Study of Organic Aerosols in Riverside to characterize the composition and sources of organic aerosol using a variety of state-of-the-art instrumentation and source apportionmenttechniques. The secondary organic aerosol (SOA) mass is estimated by elemental carbon and carbon monoxide tracer methods, water soluble organic carbon content, chemical mass balance of organic molecular markers, and positive matrix factorization of high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer data. Estimates obtained from each ofthese methods indicate that the organic fraction in ambient aerosol is overwhelmingly secondary in nature during a period of several weeks with moderate ozone concentrations and that SOA is the single largest component of PM1 aerosol in Riverside. Average SOA/OA contributions of 70-90% were observed during midday periods, whereas minimum SOA contributions of approximately 45% were observed during peak morning traffic periods. These results are contraryto previous estimates of SOAthroughout the Los Angeles Basin which reported that, other than during severe photochemical smog episodes, SOA was lower than primary OA. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed.  相似文献

The Val1??Met polymorphism of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene has been associated with aspects of schizophrenia that are possibly related to the disorder's pathogenesis. The present study investigated the Val1??Met polymorphism in relation to anhedonia--a construct central to negative schizotypy. Anhedonia and other schizotypal characteristics were assessed in relatives of patients with schizophrenia, relatives of patients with bipolar disorder, and nonpsychiatric controls using the Chapman schizotypy scales and the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire. Compared with controls, relatives of individuals with schizophrenia had elevated scores on Chapman scales for social anhedonia and physical anhedonia, while relatives of patients with bipolar disorder exhibited only increased scores on the Social Anhedonia Scale. As a group, relatives of patients with schizophrenia who were homozygous for the val allele of the COMT polymorphism showed the highest elevations in self-reported social and physical anhedonia. Associations with the COMT polymorphism were absent in relatives of patients with bipolar disorder and control participants. Findings suggest that anhedonia is manifest in individuals who carry genetic liability for schizophrenia and is associated with the Val1??Met polymorphism of the COMT gene. Research has supported the notion that ethnoracial minorities in the juvenile justice system use fewer mental health services than Caucasians do. The authors' aim was to examine potential sociodemographic (including racial background) associations with the use of mental health and residential care among juvenile delinquents adjudicated through court services. The authors extracted demographic, mental health, and residential care data from archival records of 149 juveniles consecutively adjudicated from a midwestern city's juvenile court services facility (from 1999 to 2002). The authors found no significant associations with mental health treatment or residential care utilization based on ethnoracial background, age, gender, and educational level, neither in bivariate nor multivariate analyses. Field-deployable, high-resolution, time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The development of a new high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) is reported. The high-resolution capabilities of this instrument allow the direct separation of most ions from inorganic and organic species at the same nominal m/z, the quantification of several types of organic fragments (CxHy, CxHyOz, CxHyNp, CxHyOzNp), and the direct identification of organic nitrogen and organosulfur content. This real-time instrument is field-deployable, and its high time resolution (0.5 Hz has been demonstrated) makes it well-suited for studies in which time resolution is critical, such as aircraft studies. The instrument has two ion optical modes: a single-reflection configuration offers higher sensitivity and lower resolving power (up to approximately 2100 at m/z 200), and a two-reflectron configuration yields higher resolving power (up to approximately 4300 at m/z 200) with lower sensitivity. The instrument also allows the determination of the size distributions of all ions. One-minute detection limits for submicrometer aerosol are <0.04 microg m(-3) for all species in the high-sensitivity mode and <0.4 microg m(-3) in the high-resolution mode. Examples of ambient aerosol data are presented from the SOAR-1 study in Riverside, CA, in which the spectra of ambient organic species are dominated by CxHy and CxHyOz fragments, and different organic and inorganic fragments at the same nominal m/z show different size distributions. Data are also presented from the MIRAGE C-130 aircraft study near Mexico City, showing high correlation with independent measurements of surrogate aerosol mass concentration.  相似文献

Singer and Wynne's measures of communication deviance were adapted for use with conversational speech and applied to audiotaped speech samples of schizophrenic patients, their parents, and matched nonpsychiatric control subjects. The parents demonstrated levels of language disturbance similar to those of the patients and higher than those of controls. Language deviance in the parents was positively associated with distractibility on a matched-task digit-span measure of attention and with severity scores on a separate schizotypy scale. These findings are discussed with respect to possible cognitive variables underlying the language disturbances and their potential relevance to schizophrenic etiology.  相似文献
