Organisational competence in Human Factors and UX (user experience) has not been looked at before despite its relevance to project success. We define organisational competence as the collective competence of the individuals, bringing together their complementary abilities to deliver an outcome that is typically more than the sum of its parts. Twenty-two UX and Human Factors practitioners were interviewed about their project work in two contrasting domains: web design and safety-critical systems to explore organisational competences. Through doing a FRAM analysis, 29 functions and 6 main areas of competences were identified: the central project process; the process of learning about the problem; maintaining and developing client relations; staff development; evolving practices; and the management of documentation for audit and quality control. These dynamic and situated competences form a web of interactions. Managing competences is essential for project success. Implications for managing careers, project tactics and organisational strategy are discussed.

Practitioner Summary: Organisational competences impact how routine and non-routine project work is performed, but these have received little attention in the literature. Six key areas of competences in Human Factors and UX project work were identified from practitioner interviews. Managing combinations of adaptive competences is important for developing careers, project tactics and organisational strategies.  相似文献

ManyEars is an open framework for microphone array-based audio processing. It consists of a sound source localization, tracking and separation system that can provide an enhanced speaker signal for improved speech and sound recognition in real-world settings. ManyEars software framework is composed of a portable and modular C library, along with a graphical user interface for tuning the parameters and for real-time monitoring. This paper presents the integration of the ManyEars Library with Willow Garage’s Robot Operating System. To facilitate the use of ManyEars on various robotic platforms, the paper also introduces the customized microphone board and sound card distributed as an open hardware solution for implementation of robotic audition systems.  相似文献

Corrugated package designers are focused on balancing the need for product protection, material use efficiency and the packaging material's impact on the environment in the supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual sustainable packaging model that integrates the variables of technical design, supply chain systems and environmental factors and then use the model to identify to improve upon corrugated container design. A model was developed, from the extant literature, and a case study was performed on a corrugated container. This is believed to be a unique integrated model of most relevant agents related to the design and implementation of a corrugated box through a supply chain from design to potential post‐consumer reuse. From this study, we found opportunities to improve the environmental design of the corrugated container through four ex ante design stages, and two ex post facto supply chain stages. Further, research can evaluate and refine this model via a ‘live supply chain’ for use in guiding corrugated box material selection design and reuse/recycling. Integration of the design criterion for a unit load in the supply chain creates opportunity to observe the packaging system holistically. Waste in the manufacturing process and CO2 emissions are traced along the material flow until the end of its useful life to provide an overall picture of the packaging system. Quantitative and robust serology assays are critical measurements underpinning global COVID-19 response to diagnostic, surveillance, and vaccine development. Here, we report a proof-of-concept approach for the development of quantitative, multiplexed flow cytometry-based serological and neutralization assays. The serology assays test the IgG and IgM against both the full-length spike antigens and the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the spike antigen. Benchmarking against an RBD-specific SARS-CoV IgG reference standard, the anti-SARS-CoV-2 RBD antibody titer was quantified in the range of 37.6 µg/mL to 31.0 ng/mL. The quantitative assays are highly specific with no correlative cross-reactivity with the spike proteins of MERS, SARS1, OC43 and HKU1 viruses. We further demonstrated good correlation between anti-RBD antibody titers and neutralizing antibody titers. The suite of serology and neutralization assays help to improve measurement confidence and are complementary and foundational for clinical and epidemiologic studies.  相似文献

Most of the established methods for utility targeting in a heat exchanger network (HEN) are mainly focusing on fixed stream conditions, where the flow rate, heat capacity, supply and target temperatures are fixed. However, in the process industries, the stream conditions (flow rates and temperatures) are not fixed. Therefore, the established HEN targeting methods cannot be directly applied to locate the hot and cold utility targets for HEN problem with varying flow rates and temperatures. To address this issue, a revised floating pinch method which uses binary variables to parameterise the stream locations on the composite curves, is presented in this work to identify the minimum utilities targets. The revised method simplify the earlier version of floating pinch method presented by Duran and Grossmann (1986) by avoiding the non-differentiability in the mathematical program. Two cases, one with fixed parameters while another with temperature-dependent properties and varying operating parameters are solved to illustrate the revised model.  相似文献

A miniature co‐extrusion technique, to produce a concentric multilayered glass fiber‐optic preform of ~3 mm diameter, is modeled and experimentally demonstrated. A three‐dimensional, incompressible, noncavitating, and nonisothermal Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model, similar to one developed in our previous work, is used to predict the dimensions of an alternating four‐layer glass stack feed required to produce the desired layer dimensions in a multilayered‐glass preform extrudate, using a miniaturized and thus more economical co‐extrusion. Strong agreement in the cross‐sectional geometrical proportions of the simulated and experimentally obtained preform supports the prowess of the predictive modeling. Nevertheless, some small deviations between the simulated and experimentally obtained dimensions indicate topics for future rheological study. Performing the co‐extrusion process under vacuum helps to minimize the inter‐layer defects in the multi‐layered fiber‐optic preform. The miniature co‐extrusion potentially removes the need for a postextrusion draw‐down prior to fiber drawing, avoiding devitrification issues possible in non‐oxide novel glass compositions.  相似文献

Soybean is an important food crop, and insect integrated pest management (IPM) is critical to the sustainability of this production system. In recent years, the introduction into the United States of the kudzu bug currently identified as Megacopta cribraria (F.), poses a threat to soybean production. The kudzu bug was first discovered in the state of Georgia, U.S. in 2009 and since then has spread to most of the southeastern states. Because it was not found in the North American subcontinent before this time, much of our knowledge of this insect comes from research done in its native habitat. However, since the U.S. introduction, studies have been undertaken to improve our understanding of the kudzu bug basic biology, microbiome, migration patterns, host selection and management in its expanding new range. Researchers are not only looking at developing IPM strategies for the kudzu bug in soybean, but also at its unique relationship with symbiotic bacteria. Adult females deposit bacterial packets with their eggs, and the neonates feed on these packets to acquire the bacteria, Candidatus Ishikawaella capsulata. The kudzu bug should be an informative model to study the co-evolution of insect function and behavior with that of a single bacteria species. We review kudzu bug trapping and survey methods, the development of bioassays for insecticide susceptibility, insecticide efficacy, host preferences, impact of the pest on urban environments, population expansion, and the occurrence of natural enemies. The identity of the kudzu bug in the U.S. is not clear. We propose that the kudzu bug currently accepted as M. cribraria in the U.S. is actually Megacoptapunctatissima, with more work needed to confirm this hypothesis.  相似文献

YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) films with thicknesses ranging from 1.0 to 6.4 μm were deposited by pulsed laser deposition on rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrates (RABiTS). The RABiTS were of the configuration CeO2/YSZ/Y2O3/Ni–3 at.% W. As the YBCO film thickness increased, I c continued to increase and reached ∼300 A/cm width for a 4.3 μm-thick YBCO film. Commonly observed mechanisms for J c decrease with increasing YBCO film thickness were not observed. Homogeneous microstructures obtained in even the thickest YBCO films, suggest that the I c/width can still be enhanced considerably.  相似文献

Three water‐soluble polymers containing linear alkyl monool, 1,2‐diol, and 1,2,3‐triol groups, mostly on the primary amines of polyethylenimine, were synthesized, characterized, and tested for their ability to recover boric acid. The boron‐binding capacities of these polymers and the backbone polyethylenimine were determined by titration, ultrafiltration, and inductively coupled plasma/atomic emission spectroscopy analysis. At low boron concentrations, the 1,2,3‐triol polymer performed better than the 1,2‐diol, whereas at high boron concentrations, the 1,2‐diol outperformed the 1,2,3‐triol. 11B‐NMR spectroscopy and retention studies with various salt concentrations indicated that boron interacted with these two polymers by means of ion pairing with the protonated amines and by borate ester formation. For the monool and the polyethylenimine backbone, the mechanism for boron binding was ion pairing only. These polymers are under consideration for the selective recovery and recycling of enriched boric acid used in the primary coolant loop of pressurized water nuclear reactors. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
