Mangement of infantile esotropia

We evaluated the management of infantile esotropia-constant, alternating esotropia before 6 months of age-in 34 children. Planned one-state surgery for satisfactory mechanical alignment was highly predicatable (79 to 84%), and was obtained at any age. Stable bifoveal motor fusion was also obtained but was more frequent with alignment before 2 years of age. The use of postsurgical spectacle orthoptics (minus lenses or prisms, or both) increased the incidence of bifoveal fusion. Surgery alone resulted in bifoveal fusion in 6% of the cases, whereas an overall incidence of 33% bifoveal fusion resulted after the use of postsurgical spectacle orthoptics by some patients. Of those receiving postsurgical spectacle orthoptics, 53% obtained bifoveal fusion. This study demonstrated a correlation between the incidence of secondary A patterns (after surgery for V esotropia) and the amount of horizontal muscle surgery done in combination with bilateral inferior oblique muscle myectomies.     

Morphological and orthographic similarity in visual word recognition.

The differential impact of orthographic and morphological relatedness on visual word recognition was investigated in a series of priming experiments in Dutch and German. With lexical decision and naming tasks, repetition priming and contiguous priming procedures, and masked and unmasked prime presentation, a pattern of results emerged with qualitative differences between the effects of morphological and form relatedness. With lexical decision, mere orthographic similarity between primes and targets (e.g., keller–KELLE, cellar–ladle) produced negative effects, whereas morphological relatedness (e.g., kellen–KELLE, ladles–ladle) consistently resulted in facilitation. With the naming task, positive priming effects were found for morphological as well as for mere form similarity. On the basis of these results, a model of the lexicon is proposed in which information about word form is represented separately from morphological structure and in which processing at the form level is characterized in terms of activation of, and competition between, form-related entries. Test sequences in screening for breast cancer

Published data of Stark and Way on the screening of 2,684 women at high risk of breast cancer are analyzed to arrive at a preferred sequence of screening tests. In the practical situation where palpation first signals a problem, the analysis suggests thermography to follow. Women with positive thermograms should then be biopsied, and those with negative thermograms should be mammographed. A positive mammogram calls for biopsy, and a negative one calls for close follow-up. For high-risk women whose breasts appear normal on palpation, a subsequent negative thermogram is not definitive enough to terminate investigation, but a negative mammogram after a negative palpation is enough evidence to waive further investigation for some time. A positive mammogram calls for immediate biopsy in any circumstance.     

Serum IgE levels in paraproteinaemia

Serum IgE levels were measured by radioimmunoassay with a 'Phadesbas test kit' in 45 patients with multiple myeloma or macroglobulinaemia. As with other immunoglobulin classes, low serum levels of IgE were found.

Zusammenfasung Maleinsäurehydrazid (TIM) bzw. Hydrazin (H) warden im Quarzrohr pyrolysiert. Bei 900° C wird H völlig zersetzt, Hauptprodukt ist das Ammoniak. Bei niedrigeren Temperaturen blieb H z. T. unzersetzt. Unter den Pyrolyseprodukten (900° C) des MH konnte kein H nachgewiesen werden. Als Pyrolyseprodukte wurden aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe, aliphatische und aromatische Nitrile und N-Heterocyclen nachgewiesen. Bei einer Pyrolysetemperatur von 650° C wurden 0,06% H (bezogen auf MH 30) gefunden. Durch Untersuchung des Rauches von Zigaretten, die mit H imprägniert waren, konnte gezeigt werden, daß H schnell zu Produkten wie Acetaldazin und Acetonitril reagiert.

Pyrolysis of maleic hydrazide and hydrazine

Summary Maleic-hydrazine (MH) and hydrazine (H) were pyrolyzed in quartz tubes. At 900° C H is completely decomposed, ammonia being the main product. At lower temperatures, H partly remained undecomposed. Among the pyrolysis products (900° C) of MH no quantities of H could be found. As pyrolysis products, aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic and aromatic nitriles and heterocycles were detected. At pyrolysis temperatures of 650° C, 0,06% H were found (related to MH 30). By investigation of cigarette smoke impregnated by H, it could be demonstrated that H quickly reacts to products like acetaldazine and acetonitrile.

     

Enzymological studies of melanin concentrating hormone (MCH) and related analogues

1. Salmon melanin concentrating hormone (MCH) is a cyclic heptadecapeptide possessing the following primary structure: Asp-Thr-Met-Arg-Cys-Met-Val-Gly-Arg-Val-Tyr-Arg-Pro-Cys-Trp-Glu-Val. 2. In the fish, Synbranchus marmoratus, skin bioassay MCH5-15 is equipotent to MCH whereas MCH5-14, which comprises only the ring structure, is about 100-fold less active. 3. MCH and two fragment analogues, MCH5-15 and MCH5-14, were studied to determine their relative stability in the presence of fish serum and purified proteolytic enzymes, trypsin and alpha-chymotrypsin. 4. After 4 hr incubation in fish serum, MCH5-15 retained 1/100, MCH5-14 1/1000 and MCH only 6/1000 of the potency of the native hormone. 5. The three peptides were also very resistant to degradation by purified proteolytic enzymes involving the following relative order of resistance: MCH5-14 > MCH5-15 > MCH. MCH5-14 potency was not altered after a 1 hr incubation in either enzyme whereas MCH retained 1/10 and 4/100 of its original potency, and MCH5-15 retained 1/10 and 8/10 of its original potency, after 1 hr in trypsin and alpha-chymotrypsin, respectively.     

High-performance TFTs fabricated on plastic substrates

Poly-Si thin-film transistors (TFTs) have recently been introduced to commercial glass flat-panel displays. This letter presents a manufacturable process for fabricating poly-Si TFTs directly on plastic substrates that exceed TFT parameter requirements for active-matrix displays. Plastic sheets are laminated onto carrier wafers, to allow use of automated tools for manufacturing. In order to maintain adhesion through the whole process, the wafer temperature is kept below 105/spl deg/C. Laser crystallization is used to grow poly-Si, and a quarter-wavelength stack layer is deposited to protect plastic from the laser processing. In order to achieve state-of-the-art poly-Si TFTs on plastic, the gate oxide is optimized. Using a higher temperature anneal after delamination minimizes leakage currents.     

Long-term follow-up in Crohn's disease. Mortality, morbidity, and functional status

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to analyse long-term results of an active approach to surgical treatment of Crohn's disease. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-six patients were studied after first resection for primary Crohn's disease during 1968-77. RESULTS: Mean follow-up was 16.6 years; 18 patients had died (3 of Crohn's disease). Cumulative risk for a second resection was 0.40 (95% confidence interval, 0.29-0.51) at 10 years and 0.45 (0.32-0.58) at 15 years, similar in classical disease and colitis. Cumulative risk of a third and fourth resection was 0.5 at 10 years. Median resected bowel length at the first operation was 8%. After two and three resections the cumulative resection was 23% and 33%, respectively. Of the patients 73% claimed full working capacity and 7% had disability pension. CONCLUSIONS: An active surgical approach in Crohn's disease is associated with low operative mortality and morbidity and good functional results and offers good symptomatic relief.
