The etiology of conduct disorder (CD) was examined retrospectively in a sample of 2,682 male, female, and unlike-sex adult twin pairs from the community-based Australian Twin Register. Model-fitting analyses indicated a substantial genetic influence on risk for CD, accounting for 71% of the variance (95% confidence interval [CI]?=?32–79%). There was not a statistically significant effect of the shared environment in the best-fitting model of CD, but a modest effect of the shared environment on the risk for CD could not be rejected (95% CI?=?0-32%). The magnitude of genetic and environmental influences for CD liability did not vary significantly for boys and girls, and the specific genetic and environmental mechanisms important for the development of CD appeared to be largely the same for both sexes. The fit of a multiple-threshold model raises the possibility that CD may not necessarily be a discrete entity but rather an extreme of the normal variation in conduct-disordered behavior found in the general population. PROBDEMO, a multi-centre European research project, began in 1996 with the aim of demonstrating that probiotic micro-organisms can positively effect human health in rigorously conducted human clinical studies. These studies, now completed, have shown that some probiotics can influence the composition of the intestinal microbiota and modulate the host immune system with measurable benefits to health, including the control of atopic eczema in infants with food allergy. Considerable promise was also demonstrated for the use of selected probiotics in controlling inflammatory bowel disease, and infections in children and the elderly. The scientific approaches to selecting and evaluating probiotics that were demonstrated in the PROBDEMO project provide a model for food manufacturers to move further towards demonstrating efficacy for their probiotic products.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: There is a current need for fresh-cooked-like yet shelf-stable egg products for U.S. military combat rations. Novel thermal processes based on radio frequency (RF) energy can shorten the heating time and reduce overheating. This technology was explored to produce shelf-stable egg products for combat ration development. Clostridium sporogenes (PA 3679) spores were used as a surrogate to validate the RF sterilization process to control Clostridium botulinum . Decimal reduction time (D value) of PA3679 in scrambled eggs was determined using aluminum thermal-death-time (TDT) tubes. The thermal inactivation kinetic information was then used in inoculated pack studies to validate a novel thermal process based on 27.12 MHz radio frequency (RF) pilot scale unit. Trays of scrambled eggs inoculated with PA 3679 were subjected to 3 processing levels: target process (F0 about 5.3 min), under-target process (F0 about 3.0 min), and over-target process (F0 about 9.1 min). The results of the microbial challenge study showed that microbial destruction from the RF process agreed with sterilization values calculated from time-temperature data measured at the cold spot in the treated trays. A comparison of RF- and retort-treated scrambled eggs showed significant differences in the degree of lightness ( L *) and redness ( a *). RF-processed egg was less brown compared with conventional retorted eggs. Retort treatment of fully cooked scrambled eggs had higher hardness, springiness, and smaller cohesiveness than RF -treated samples. This study suggests that RF thermal processes can produce safe, shelf-stable sterilized scrambled eggs for both military and civilian uses.  相似文献

In this investigation Raman spectroscopy was shown to be a method that could be used to monitor the polymerisation of PMMA bone cement. Presently there is no objective method that orthopaedic surgeons can use to quantify the curing process of cement during surgery. Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive, non-destructive technique that could offer such an option. Two commercially available bone cements (Palacos® R and SmartSet® HV) and different storage conditions (4 and 22°C) were used to validate the technique. Raman spectroscopy was found to be repeatable across all conditions with the completion of the polymerisation process particularly easy to establish. All tests were benchmarked against current temperature monitoring methods outlined in ISO and ASTM standards. There was found to be close agreement with the standard methods and the Raman spectroscopy used in this study.  相似文献

Cemented fixation of hip replacements is the elective choice of many orthopaedic surgeons. The cement is an acrylic polymer which grouts the prostheses into the medullary cavity of the femur. Cement pressure is accepted as a significant parameter in determining the strength of cement/bone interfaces and hence preventing loosening of the prostheses. The aim of this work was to allow optimal design of the intramedullary stem of a hip prosthesis through knowledge of the flow characteristics of curing bone cement which can be used to predict pressures achieved during insertion of the femoral stem. The viscosity of the cement is a vital property determining the cement flow and hence cement interdigitation into bone. The apparent viscosities, nu(a), of three commercial bone cements were determined with respect to time by extrusion of the curing cement through a parallel die of known geometry under selected pressures. Theoretical models were developed and implemented in a computer program to describe cement flow in three models each of increasing complexity: (a) a simple parallel cylinder, (b) a tapered conical mandrel and (c) an actual femoral prosthesis, the latter models being complicated by extensional effects as annular areas increase. Predicted pressures were close to those measured experimentally, maximum pressures being in the range 10-160 kPa which may be compared with a threshold of 76 kPa proposed for effective interdigitation with cancellous bone. The theoretical model allows the prosthesis/bone geometry of an individual patient to be evaluated in terms of probable pressure distributions in the medullary cavity during cemented fixation and can guide stem design with reference to preparation of the medullary canal. It is proposed that these models may assist retrospective studies of failed components and contribute to implant selection, or to making informed selection from options in custom hip prosthesis designs to achieve optimum cement pressurization.  相似文献

Sucrose laurates, sucrose palmitate, sucrose stearates, and monolaurin (Lauricidin) were evaluated for inhibitory effects against spores of Bacillus sp., Clostridium sporogenes PA3679, and Alicyclobacillus sp. in a model agar system. The combined treatment of sucrose laurate, high hydrostatic pressure, and mild heat was evaluated on spores of Bacillus and Alicyclobacillus in foods. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of the sucrose esters were higher than that of Lauricidin for all spores tested in the model agar system, but Lauricidin was not the most readily suspended in the test media. The sucrose laurates and sucrose palmitate were more effective and more readily suspended than the sucrose stearates. A combined treatment of sucrose laurate (<1.0%), 392 megaPascals (MPa) at 45 degrees C for 10 to 15 min provided 3- to 5.5-log10 CFU/ml reductions from initial populations of 10(6) CFU/ml for Bacillus subtilis 168 in milk, Bacillus cereus 14579 in beef, Bacillus coagulans 7050 in tomato juice (pH 4.5), Alicyclobacillus sp. N1089 in tomato juice (pH 4.5), and Alicyclobacillus sp. N1098 in apple juice. The most notable change in the appearance of the products was temporary foaming during mixing of the sucrose laurate in the foods. The effect of sucrose laurate appeared to be inhibitory rather than lethal to the spores. The inhibitory effects observed on Bacillus and Alicyclobacillus spores by the combined treatment of pressure, mild heat, and sucrose laurate appear promising for food applications where alternatives to high heat processing are desired.  相似文献

Fe-Pt alloys near the composition Fe3Pt transform from fee austenite to bcc martensite at near ambient temperatures. The effect of austenite ordering in depressing theM s temperature has been reported previously, but more importantly the present work shows that ordering leads to a reversible martensitic transformation. The characteristics of this reversible transformation have been investigated by optical metallography, cinematography, and electrical resistivity measurements. It is concluded that in austenite ordered to an appropriate degree, the transformation to martensite possesses all of the characteristics of a thermoelastic martensite transformation. This transformation in ordered Fe~25 at. pct Pt alloys is the first thermoelastic martensite transformation reported for an iron-base alloy. The present experiments indicate that martensite “nuclei” are not destroyed by the transformation, and are reactivated on each cooling cycle at approximately the same temperature. D. P. The finite element method is now a well established tool for the routine treatment of large linear problems, but the treatment of non-linear problems by the method is yet at the beginning.Section 1 of the present work extends the idea of natural strains and stresses to large strains in simplex finite elements.Section 2 applies some algorithms developed for structural dynamics to the problem of non-linear wave propagation including a case of shock development.Section 3 discusses with numerical examples special difficulties when displacement finite elements are used to solve problems with incompressible or nearly incompressible material.  相似文献

The matrix displacement analysis of geometrically nonlinear structures becomes an intricate task as soon as finite elements in space with rotational degrees of freedom are considered. The fundamental reason for these difficulties lies in the non-commutativity of successive finite rotations about fixed axes with different directions. In order to circumvent this difficulty, a new definition of rotations — the so-called semitangential rotations — is introduced in this paper. Our new definition leads to a reformulation of the theory of [1,2]which in itself is clearly consistent and correct.In contrast to rotations about fixed axes these semitangential rotations which correspond to the semitangential torques of Ziegler [3]possess the most important property of being commutative. In this manner, all complexities involved in the standard definition of rotations are avoided ab initio.A specific aspect of this paper is a careful exposition of semitangential torques and rotations, as well as the consequences of the semitangential definitions for the geometrical stiffness of finite elements. In fact, these new definitions permit a very simple and consistent derivation of the geometrical stiffness matrices. Moreover, the semitangential definition automatically leads to a symmetric geometrical stiffness which clearly expresses that the nonlinear strain-displacement relations must satisfy the condition of conservativity of the structure itself — independently of any loading.The general theory of geometrical stiffness matrices as evolved in this paper is applied to beams in space. The consistency of the theory is demonstrated by a large number of numerical examples not only of straight beams but also of the lateral and torsional buckling and post-buckling behaviour of stiff-joined frames.
