Reviews evidence that (a) supported the proposition that general emotional arousal facilitates aggression in the presence of aggressive cues and (b) substantiated the position that an arousal state of anger specifically increases the instigation to aggression. Furthermore, research is reviewed which supports the view that additional general arousal increases or decreases the effect of anger on aggression, depending on whether the arousal state is attributed to the source of the anger or to another source of general arousal. Controversy about the anger/aggression relation is discussed in terms of the failure to specify the function of the aggressive response. Research revealed that if the aggressive response is directed primarily toward injuring the target (but not toward some other goal), an angered person expresses aggression. In a pediatric office setting, car safety counseling was provided to 16 primigravida women during a prenatal pediatric interview. A control group of 19 women received no counseling during a similar interview. Forty-two percent of noncounseled mothers and 69% of counseled mothers were using a safe infant restraint system at the six-week well-child visit. Uremic pericarditis remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in most hemodialysis programs. A review of the literature and out own experience show that uremic pericarditis should be vigorously treated when detected. Usually an increase in the dialysis program with regional heparinization is sufficient to control the pericarditis. When signs of pericardial effusion are manifested, patients often progress rapidly to cardiac tamponade. A surgical anterolateral pericardiectomy is the most satisfactory measure in controlling pericardial effusion and preventing fatal cardiac tamponade. Although these patients have severely impaired renal function, the operation can be performed safely with a low morbidity and mortality.  相似文献

Adult worker honey bees alter their behaviour with age but retain a strong reliance on sensory information from the antennae. The antennae house a diverse array of receptors, including mechanoreceptors, hygroreceptors, olfactory receptors, and contact chemoreceptors, which relay information to the brain. Antennal sensory neurons that project to the antennal lobes of the brain converge onto second-order interneurones to form discrete spheres of neuropil, called glomeruli. The spatial organisation of glomeruli in the antennal lobes of the honey bee is constant, but the central distribution of information from receptors tuned to different sensory modalities is unknown. Here we show that the glomerular neuropil of the antennal lobes undergoes constant modification during the lifetime of the adult worker bee. Changes in morphology are site specific and highly predictable. The total volume of the glomerular neuropil of the antennal lobe increased significantly during the first 4 days of adult life. Each of the five readily identifiable glomeruli examined in this study exhibited a unique pattern of growth. The growth of two of the five glomeruli changed dramatically with the shift to foraging duties. Furthermore, significant differences were identified between the antennal lobes of bees performing nectar- and pollen-foraging tasks. The highly compartmentalized nature of the antennal lobes, the ease with which specific glomeruli can be identified, and the predictability of changes to the antennal lobe neuropil make this an ideal system for examining the mechanisms and behavioural consequences of structural plasticity in primary sensory centres of the brain.  相似文献

The present study measured the normal blink rate (BR) variations in relation to behavioral tasks in 150 healthy volunteers (70 males and 80 females; aged 35.9 +/- 17.9 years, range 5-87 years). The subjects were videotaped in a standard setting while performing three different tasks: resting quietly, reading a short passage, talking freely. The mean BR was computed during each task; the data were compared by means of analysis of variance and Student's t tests. Mean BR at rest was 17 blinks/min, during conversation it increased to 26, and it was as low as 4.5 while reading. As compared with rest, BR decreased by -55.08% while reading (p < 1 x 10(-15)) and increased by 99.70% during conversation (p < 1 x 10(-9)). As compared with reading, BR increased during conversation by 577.8% (p < 1 x 10(-17). The distribution curves were highly reproducible in each task. The best curve fit was represented by a log-normal distribution, with the upper tail of each curve having a normal distribution. Eye color and eyeglass wearing did not influence BR. Women had higher BR than men just while reading. No age-related differences were found. The most common BR pattern was conversation > rest > reading, which occurred in 101 subjects (67.3%); 34 subjects (22.7%) had the pattern rest > conversation > reading; 12 (8.0%) had the pattern conversation > reading > rest. This study identified three normal behavioral BR patterns and showed that BR is more influenced by cognitive processes than by age, eye color, or local factors. The present findings provide a normal reference for the analysis of BR in movement disorders such as dystonia or tics.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The hedgehog (hh) family of secreted signaling proteins is responsible for developmental patterning in a variety of systems, including the neural tube, limbs and somites. Within the neural tube, at the level of the spinal cord, products of the vertebrate gene sonic hedgehog (shh) are proposed to function as a ventral patterning influence, with the capability of inducing floor plate and motor neurons. RESULTS: We report the isolation of tiggy-winkle hedgehog (twhh), a novel member of the zebrafish hh gene family. Both twhh and shh are expressed in the ventral midline of the embryonic zebrafish neural tube and brain, but twhh expression becomes limited to the neural tube, whereas shh is also expressed in the notochord. Both genes are expressed in the developing brain, in domains that include a discrete region in the floor of the diencephalon, located between the sites of the future optic stalks. Using pax-2 and pax-6 as markers of proximo-distal fate within the developing eye, we found that ectopic expression of either hh gene promoted proximal fates and suppressed distal fates. In contrast, proximal fates were lost in cyclops mutant embryos, which lack twhh- and shh-expressing forebrain cells. Both twhh and shh proteins undergo autoproteolytic processing in vivo; a fragment corresponding to the amino-terminal cleavage product was sufficient to carry out all signaling activities associated with twhh in eye and brain development. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that secreted signals encoded by members of the hedgehog gene family, emanating from the ventral midline of the neural tube, not only play important roles in dorso-ventral patterning of the brain but also appear to constitute an early patterning activity along the proximo-distal axis of the developing eyes.  相似文献

We studied apoptosis caused by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in vivo, focusing on the tissues that constitute the main targets for infection: lung and lymphoid tissues. Previous investigators have shown that the PRRSV glycoprotein p25, encoded by PRRSV open reading frame 5, induces apoptosis when expressed in COS-1 cells. Results of studies conducted in our laboratory indicate the simultaneous occurrence of PRRSV-induced alterations of spermatogenesis and apoptotic death of germinal epithelial cells in the testicle. In this study, the goal was to determine whether virus-induced apoptosis is a direct mechanism of cell death caused by PRRSV in infected pigs. Eight 3-week-old pigs were intranasally inoculated with PRRSV 16244B, a highly virulent field strain. Lung, tonsil, bronchial lymph node, spleen, and heart were assessed histologically at 4 and 7 days postinfection. To characterize PRRSV-infected cells and apoptotic cell death, we used immunohistochemical methods for detection of viral antigen, DNA electrophoresis for detection of DNA fragmentation, the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate-fluorescein nick end labeling method for in situ detection of DNA strand breaks, and electron microscopy for ultrastructural morphologic studies. PRRSV infection resulted in widespread apoptosis in the lungs and lymphoid tissues of infected pigs. Virus infection-induced apoptotic cells were more abundant than PRRSV-infected cells in all tissues. DNA laddering was detected in lung and lymphoid tissues. However, double-labeling experiments demonstrated that the majority of apoptotic cells did not colocalize with PRRSV-infected cells. Our findings suggest the presence of an indirect mechanism in the induction of apoptosis for PRRSV.  相似文献

Mutated RAS oncoproteins and epidermal growth factor (EGF) are thought to contribute to the proliferative, invasive and metastatic properties of transformed cells. In the present study, we investigated the role of EGF in two H-ras transfected clones and compared it to that in the parental cell line, HaCaT and primary cultured keratinocytes. Our findings show that the motility on type I collagen, measured by the migration index, was similar for both the HaCaT cell line and normal human keratinocytes, whereas it was higher for the HaCaT-ras clones. These results suggest an involvement of the ras oncogene in the stimulation of cell migration. EGF in cell pretreatment or during the migration assay also caused an increase in migration of all the cells, but preserved the difference between HaCaT and HaCaT-ras. However, no significant difference in EGF-R expression was detected between normal cultured keratinocytes, HaCaT and HaCaT-ras cell lines with or without EGF pretreatment. Moreover, when the cells were stimulated with EGF, the MMP-9 activity was greatly increased in a dose-dependent manner in all the cells, and EGF stimulation particularly highlights the increased amount of MMP-9 in HaCaT-ras cells compared to HaCaT cells. In conclusion, EGF is able to enhance motility and to up-regulate MMP-9 activity in all cells, but with a higher impact in HaCaT-ras cells without an overexpression of EGF-R. As EGF acts in synergy with the H-ras mutation, they could be implicated in the local invasion by the HaCaT-ras clones.  相似文献
