Interviews were conducted with students from a sophomore‐level mechanics of materials class, a sophomore/junior‐level structures class, a senior‐level steel design class and a graduate‐level advanced steel design class to investigate students' conceptual understanding of bending and normal stress. The graduate students generally demonstrated higher computational skill and confidence but they were not significantly different from the sophomores in terms of conceptual understanding. Interestingly, the seniors showed markedly lower confidence in their ability to solve the problems posed in the interviews. Common difficulties include a conceptual definition of stress and reasoning involving the normal stresses developed under bending.  相似文献

Plasma cholesterol, arachidonic acid (AA, 20∶4n−6), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22∶6n−3) are higher in breast-fed infants than in infants fed formula without cholesterol, AA, or DHA. This study investigated differences in plasma, hepatic, and bile lipids and phospholipid fatty acids, and expression of hepatic proteins involved in sterol metabolism that result from feeding formula with cholesterol with egg phospholipid to provide AA and DHA. For this study, three groups of piglets were evaluated: piglets fed formula with 0.65 mmol/L cholesterol, the same formula with 0.8% AA and 0.2% DHA from egg phospholipid, and piglets fed sow milk. Piglets fed the formula with phospholipid AA and DHA had higher plasma high density lipoprotein, but not apoprotein (apo) B cholesterol or triglyceride; higher bile acid and phospholipid concentrations in bile; and higher liver and bile phospholipid AA and DHA than piglets fed formula without AA and DHA (P<0.05). Hydroxy methylglutaryl (HMG)-CoA reductase and 7-α-hydroxylase, the rate-limiting enzymes of cholesterol and bile acid synthesis, respectively, and low density lipoprotein receptor mRNA levels were not different between piglets fed formula without and with phospholipid AA and DHA, but HMG-CoA reductase and 7α-hydroxylase mRNA were higher, and plasma apo B containing lipoprotein cholesterol was lower in all piglets fed formula than in piglets fed milk. These studies show that supplementing formula with AA and DHA from egg phospholipid alters bile metabolism by increasing the bile AA and DHA, and bile acid and phospholipid.  相似文献

For counseling settings, research suggests that softness, personalization, and order might affect the experience and the perceived expertness, trustworthiness, and social attractiveness of the therapist. This article discusses exploratory studies on college students' perception of the counseling office environment and whether the likely client experience was associated with the softness/personalization and order of the office. As stimuli, the studies used 30 color photographs of psychotherapists' offices viewed from the client's perspective. After obtaining ratings of the characteristics of each office, we obtained ratings from different groups of students of the quality of care and comfort expected in each office (Study 1) and how qualified, bold, and friendly the therapist in the office would be (Study 2). Additional studies examined the likelihood of choosing a therapist based on the office, and the first thought or feeling that came to mind about the office, the therapist, and the patient experience. There were strong correlations in response between groups (by whether they had experienced therapy; their level in school; their gender; and their major, location, and school size). The quality of care, comfort, therapist boldness, qualifications of the therapist, and the likelihood that one would choose a therapist based on the office improved with increases in the office's softness/personalization and order. Friendliness improved with increases in softness/personalization. The office choices, open-ended responses, and reported reasons for the ratings confirmed the importance of softness (comfort) and order. Research should test longer term exposure and behavior. The curing time, surface adhesion, and water absorption characteristics of Sylgard 184 were modified through the addition of catalysts and fillers. Incorporation of small amounts of a platinum-based Karstedt catalyst greatly decreased curing time at room temperature, whereas the addition of talcum powder (talc), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and NaY zeolite fillers changed surface adhesion and functionality of Sylgard 184. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), rheological and mechanical tests (tensile strength and hardness) were used to quantify the acceleration in the curing time. The surface adhesion was evaluated for aluminum and glass-like substrates using a 90° peel-off test. The interaction between fillers and Sylgard was studied by molecular dynamics simulations, which showed the interaction between NaY and Sylgard is greater than that for PTFE. Water absorption studies indicated that 10 wt% NaY added to Sylgard 184 helped to improve water absorption, whereas incorporation of talc had the opposite effect. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Foregrounding the photograph’s ontological ambiguity, this article examines a possible social agency for the photograph within an art discourse, which seeks to create space for political mobilization. Using Jacques Rancière’s theoretical development of an a priori logic of an equality of intelligence, it examines how an assumed equality, applied across various forms of photography, can provide a more productive framework to consider how images are used and reused. This paper argues that by assuming this a priori logic, we can move the debate beyond questions that are concerned with the originality of an image or its status as document and allows for a reconsideration of its use as a catalyst for debate.  相似文献

The manner in which the superficial retinal vascular plexus (RVP) develops in neonatal wild-type mice is relatively well documented and poses an interesting challenge to the mathematical modelling community. Prior to birth, astrocyte sprouting and proliferation begin around the edge of the optic nerve head, and subsequent astrocyte migration in response to a chemotactic gradient of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-A results in the formation of a dense scaffold on the surface of the inner retina. Astrocytes express a variety of chemotactic and haptotactic proteins that subsequently induce endothelial cell sprouting and modulate growth of the RVP. An experimentally informed, two-dimensional hybrid partial differential equation-discrete model is derived to track the outward migration of individual astrocyte and endothelial tip cells in response to the appropriate biochemical cues. Blood perfusion is included throughout the development of the plexus, and the evolving retinal trees are allowed to adapt and remodel by means of several biological stimuli. The resulting wild-type in silico RVP structures are compared with corresponding experimental whole mounts taken at various stages of development, and agreement between the respective vascular morphologies is found to be excellent. Subsequent numerical predictions help elucidate some of the key biological processes underlying retinal development and demonstrate the potential of the virtual retina for the investigation of various vascular-related diseases of the eye.  相似文献

Despite the recognition that phytohormonal signaling mediates induced responses to herbivory, we still have little understanding of how such signaling varies among closely related species and may generate herbivore-specific induced responses. We studied closely related milkweeds (Asclepias) to link: 1) plant damage by two specialist chewing herbivores (milkweed leaf beetles Labidomera clivicolis and monarch caterpillars Danaus plexippus); 2) production of the phytohormones jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and abscisic acid (ABA); 3) induction of defensive cardenolides and latex; and 4) impacts on Danaus caterpillars. We first show that A. syriaca exhibits induced resistance following monarch herbivory (i.e., reduced monarch growth on previously damaged plants), while the defensively dissimilar A. tuberosa does not. We next worked with a broader group of five Asclepias, including these two species, that are highly divergent in defensive traits yet from the same clade. Three of the five species showed herbivore-induced changes in cardenolides, while induced latex was found in four species. Among the phytohormones, JA and ABA showed specific responses (although they generally increased) to insect species and among the plant species. In contrast, SA responses were consistent among plant and herbivore species, showing a decline following herbivore attack. Jasmonic acid showed a positive quantitative relationship only with latex, and this was strongest in plants damaged by D. plexippus. Although phytohormones showed qualitative tradeoffs (i.e., treatments that enhanced JA reduced SA), the few significant individual plant-level correlations among hormones were positive, and these were strongest between JA and ABA in monarch damaged plants. We conclude that: 1) latex exudation is positively associated with endogenous JA levels, even among low-latex species; 2) correlations among milkweed hormones are generally positive, although herbivore damage induces a divergence (tradeoff) between JA and SA; 3) induction of cardenolides and latex are not necessarily physiologically linked; and 4) even very closely related species show highly divergent induction, with some species showing strong defenses, hormonally-mediated induction, and impacts on herbivores, while other milkweed species apparently use alternative strategies to cope with insect attack.  相似文献
