Mechanical properties of thermoplastic polymers can be improved by incorporation of nanoscaled layered silicates. To achieve a significant improvement, the silicates have to be well exfoliated within the polymer matrix. However, it is not always possible to produce exfoliated nanocompounds with the standard procedure of melt compounding. As an alternative to melt compounding, an in situ process for the production of polyamide 6‐nanocompounds is investigated. During the in situ production, the layered silicates are dispersed in the monomer caprolactam prior to the step of polymerization in a twin‐screw extruder, leading to an intercalation of the silicate filler. The production of a polyamide compound containing 0, 2, and 4 wt % nanoscaled silicates was successful. Young's modulus was increased by ~ 30–60%. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Caseins - the main constituents of bovine milk proteins - self-assemble into large supramolecular aggregates, so-called casein micelles. The enhancement of the stability of casein micelles is advantageous with respect to technological milk processing. A promising approach to accomplish this goal is the cross-linking of caseins using microbial transglutaminase (mTG). The present paper describes the combined use of liquid- and solid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy as well as dynamic light scattering in order to characterize the influence of an mTG treatment upon the structure of micelles in ultrahigh temperature (UHT)-treated skim milk at a molecular level. Liquid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy was applied to characterize milk, milk serum and casein dispersions. A narrow SerP signal in the liquid-state 31P NMR spectra of UHT-treated milk is shown to be due to casein molecules in the milk serum whereas the casein molecules bound in the micelles give rise to broad signals. Most of the caseins contribute to a 3 kHz broad background signal which can be visualized in the spectrum of suspensions of re-dispersed micellar material derived from UHT-treated milk. Treatment with mTG results in a cross-linking of caseins, which could be followed by liquid-state 31P NMR spectroscopy. Especially, the cross-linking of β-casein was demonstrated by quantitative liquid-state 31P NMR experiments. Furthermore, the stability of cross-linked micellar aggregates against EDTA could be investigated by liquid-state 31P HR NMR in combination with dynamic light scattering (DLS). Solid-state 31P NMR was used to show that the motional state of the κ-caseins located at the outer surface of the micelles derived from UHT-treated milk is not significantly changed by the applied mTG treatment.  相似文献

Nanotechnology in the field of drug delivery comes with great benefits due to the unique physicochemical properties of newly developed nanocarriers. However, they may come as well with severe toxicological side effects because of unwanted accumulation in organs outside of their targeted site of actions. Several studies showed an unintended accumulation of various nanocarriers in female sex organs, especially in the ovaries. Some led to inflammation, fibrosis, or decreasing follicle numbers. However, none of these studies investigated ovarian accumulation in context to both reproductive aging and particle size. Besides the influences of particle size, the biodistribution profile may be altered as well by reproductive aging because of reduced capacities of the reticuloendothelial system (RES), changes in sex steroid hormone levels as well as altering ovarian stromal blood flow. This systematic investigation of the biodistribution of intravenously (i.v) injected nanoemulsions revealed significant dependencies on the two parameters particle size and age starting from juvenile prepubescent to senescent mice. Using fluorescent in vivo and ex vivo imaging, prepubescent mice showed nearly no accumulation of nanoemulsion in their uteri and ovaries, but high accumulations in the organs of the RES liver and spleen independently of the particle size. In fertile adult mice, the accumulation increased significantly in the ovaries with an increased particle size of the nanoemulsions by nearly doubling the portion of the average radiant efficiency (PARE) to ~10% of the total measured signal of all excised organs. With reproductive aging and hence loss of fertility in senescent mice, the accumulation decreased again to moderate levels, again independently of the particle size. In conclusion, the ovarian accumulation of these nanocarriers depended on both the age plus the particle size during maturity.  相似文献

We identify and fill some gaps with regard to consistency (the extent to which false positives are produced) for public-key encryption with keyword search (PEKS). We define computational and statistical relaxations of the existing notion of perfect consistency, show that the scheme of Boneh et al. (Advances in Cryptology—EUROCRYPT 2004, ed. by C. Cachin, J. Camenisch, pp. 506–522, 2004) is computationally consistent, and provide a new scheme that is statistically consistent. We also provide a transform of an anonymous identity-based encryption (IBE) scheme to a secure PEKS scheme that, unlike the previous one, guarantees consistency. Finally, we suggest three extensions of the basic notions considered here, namely anonymous hierarchical identity-based encryption, public-key encryption with temporary keyword search, and identity-based encryption with keyword search. Organic electrode materials are of long‐standing interest for next‐generation sustainable lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). As a promising cathode candidate, imide compounds have attracted extensive attention due to their low cost, high theoretical capacity, high working voltage, and fast redox reaction. However, the redox active site utilization of imide electrodes remains challenging for them to fulfill their potential applications. Herein, the synthesis of a highly stable, crystalline 2D polyarylimide (2D‐PAI) integrated with carbon nanotube (CNT) is demonstrated for the use as cathode material in LIBs. The synthesized polyarylimide hybrid (2D‐PAI@CNT) is featured with abundant π‐conjugated redox‐active naphthalene diimide units, a robust cyclic imide linkage, high surface area, and well‐defined accessible pores, which render the efficient utilization of redox active sites (82.9%), excellent structural stability, and fast ion diffusion. As a consequence, high rate capability and ultrastable cycle stability (100% capacity retention after 8000 cycles) are achieved in the 2D‐PAI@CNT cathode, which far exceeds the state‐of‐the‐art polyimide electrodes. This work may inspire the development of novel organic electrodes for sustainable and durable rechargeable batteries.  相似文献

We present a combined multiphoton-acoustic microscope giving collocated access to the local morphological as well as mechanical properties of living cells. Both methods relay on intrinsic contrast mechanisms and dispense with the need of staining. In the acoustic part of the microscope, a gigahertz ultrasound wave is generated by an acoustic lens and the reflected sound energy is detected by the identical lens in a confocal setup. The achieved lateral resolution is in the range of 1 mum. Contrast in the images arises mainly from the local absorption of sound in the cells related to viscose damping. Additionally, acoustic microscopy can access the sound speed as well as the acoustic impedance of the cell membrane and the cell shape, as it is an intrinsic volume scanning technique. The multiphoton image formation bases on the detection of autofluorescence due to endogenous fluorophores. The nonlinearity of two-photon absorption provides submicron lateral and axial resolution without the need of confocal optical detection. In addition, in the near-IR cell damages are drastically reduced in comparison with direct excitation in the visible or UV. The presented setup was aligned with a dedicated procedure to ensure identical image areas. Combined multiphoton/acoustic images of living myoblast cells are discussed focusing on the reliability of the method.  相似文献

Objectives

We assessed the use of high-resolution ultra-high-field diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) to determine neuronal fiber orientation density functions (fODFs) throughout the human brain, including gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and small intertwined structures in the cerebellopontine region.

Materials and methods

We acquired 7-T whole-brain dMRI data of 23 volunteers with 1.4-mm isotropic resolution; fODFs were estimated using constrained spherical deconvolution.

Results

High-resolution fODFs enabled a detailed view of the intravoxel distributions of fiber populations in the whole brain. In the brainstem region, the fODF of the extra- and intrapontine parts of the trigeminus could be resolved. Intrapontine trigeminal fiber populations were crossed in a network-like fashion by fiber populations of the surrounding cerebellopontine tracts. In cortical GM, additional evidence was found that in parts of primary somatosensory cortex, fODFs seem to be oriented less perpendicular to the cortical surface than in GM of motor, premotor, and secondary somatosensory cortices.

Conclusion

With 7-T MRI being introduced into clinical routine, high-resolution dMRI and derived measures such as fODFs can serve to characterize fine-scale anatomic structures as a prerequisite to detecting pathologies in GM and small or intertwined WM tracts.

This article presents experimental evidence on forced choices between inferior alternatives. In asking subjects to make trade offs between an experimentally induced cold-pressor pain of different durations and paying money to avoid the administration of pain, we try to shed some light on the questions: (a) are there any gender differences in elicited willingness to pay (WTP) values for pain; (b) when present, is differing WTP across genders better explained by measures of risk-aversion or measures of loss-aversion; and (c) we further investigate whether there are variations in hypothetically elicited WTP values (hypothetical pain and hypothetical money) and WTP values elicited when subjects face real consequences (both real pain and real money). Our results confirmed the hypothesis of significant gender differences in elicited WTP values in both the hypothetical and real groups. We also found some evidence of significant differences due to the treatment. Subjects who experienced the cold-pressor pain only once (hypothetical group) exhibited on average greater WTP compared with subjects who experienced the cold-pressor pain multiple times (real group). Females, however, stated lower WTP in the real treatment while for males the effect was in the opposite direction.
