Finite element procedures for the analysis of composite structures under compressive loads (buckling and post-buckling) generally
are not deployed in books because they are still considered object of research whereas they are deemed as assessed by researchers
that focus their papers on restricted audience topics. Therefore, regarding these procedures, a gap exists in literature between
what researchers consider as well established and what has been already published. The aim of this paper is to contribute
to close this gap by providing an insight in linear and non-linear buckling analyses and in their use with composite structures.
Both modelling and analysis considerations are presented and discussed, focusing on what can be considered as best practice
when dealing with this kind of problems. Applications (to a stiffened panel and to a wing box) are provided for demonstrating

Mesostasis material present in the interstices of volcanic rocks is the main cause of the alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) in concretes made with these rock aggregates. Mesostasis often is referred to as volcanic glass, because it has amorphous features when analyzed by optical microscopy. However, this study demonstrates that mesostasis in the interstitials of volcanic rocks most often consists of micro to cryptocrystalline mineral phases of quartz, feldspars, and clays. Mesostasis has been identified as having different characteristics, and, thus, this new characterization calls for a re-evaluation of their influence on the reactivity of the volcanic rocks. In this article, tissue layers and cells characteristics of the Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa H.B.K.) shell (tegument), brown skin (testae), and edible part (cotyledons) were identified by stereoscopy (SM) and scanning electron microscopies (SEM). (a) The shell (a lignin rich, protective wall) varies in thickness throughout the nut structure and comprises different tissue types (total 3)/texture (hard/mid‐hard/soft), layers (2 to 5), colors (light to dark brown and white to cream), cell shape (amorphous/flattened on both surfaces; polygonal and cylindrical with thick, porous primary and secondary wall in cross‐section), and vascular distribution (helically and polyedrical thickened vessels at soft tissue and locule/channel structures). These variations are observed either in the shell faces, face corners, nut tips, or locule in testae. (b) The brown skin (shell nut part linked to both the shell and edible part) is made of flattened irregular‐shaped parenchymal cells distributed in several layers with more flexible fibrous, thinner wall tissue than shell. It has both rough and smooth shiny texture on the upper and lower surfaces, respectively. However, the nut (c) edible part, that is the nut storage tissue, shows several different tissue/cell layers starting from epidermis (double/triple cells sequence of round and palisade shapes) layer–the endosperm tissue. The parenchymal tissues show cells of irregular shape with small and larger sizes distributed in regular and randomly layers, respectively, separated by a short meristem tissue layer. The cortex cells increase in size as they approach the cotyledons junction. The Brazil nut part's tissue layers and cells were identified by the SM and SEM microscopy methods applied, which provides knowledge for further understanding of nut alterations that may occur either in the forest or during the factory processing. 相似文献

The coexistence of urban green spaces and infrastructure is often difficult. Trees find inhospitable environments in urban areas, whereas tree root systems can damage sidewalk, street and parking lot. The main form of failure concerns the growing of tree roots beneath the pavements, which produce upheavals and displacements on wearing course. The main objective of this study was a distinct element method modelling analysis of the potential interactions between tree root systems and street pavements. This calculation code allowed us to simulate the dynamic behaviour of the ground-pavement system as result of the roots growth. The performed modelling, representative of various planting strategies commonly used in urban contexts, have highlighted the progressive reduction of deformations with the increase of the roots penetration depth. Such displacements were strongly influenced by other factors such as the porosity and the grain-size distribution of the soil and the type of pavement considered. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis article accounts for how value in design research can be derived from knowledge exchange that occurs through the collaborative discourse of doing design. To demonstrate this point, the article details the arc and impact of a design research collaboration that extended over several years with design practitioners in the field of internet-connected devices. As a result of this ongoing collaborative work, a programmatic set of design ideals and intentions concerning how to construct a more transparent and ethical relationship with technology was shaped. We examine this sustained and transformative collaboration as a series of knowledge exchanges. Within each particular collaborative project, worldviews and knowledge are exchanged among design researchers and practitioners, enabling them to traverse ‘through practices’ of academic and professional design. To unpack these exchanges and how they built and fed into each other, the article examines how collaboration unfolded and produced value on two levels: first on the scale of the academics and practitioners directly involved in a project; and secondly on the scale of the larger international community of design practitioners concerned with Internet-connected devices, with whom we had shared our work. 相似文献

Given the high energy consumption connected to old buildings and their large environmental impact, there is a strong need for effective solutions for the building envelope retrofitting. Among these solutions, external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) have found large application in recent decades. In this paper a new kind of large-size thermal insulation composite boards, prefabricated using porcelain stoneware slab finishing, was developed. Different thermal insulating materials and adhesives, with and without glass fibre mesh, were tested by both current methodologies and purposely designed tests, in order to assess their physical–mechanical properties and durability performance, finally selecting the most suitable materials for the composite board. The strong points of this composite board are mainly: (i) its short placing time and improved execution quality, due to prefabrication; (ii) its high aesthetical value; (iii) its high durability, as the finishing layer is mostly insensible to weathering. The results highlight the good performances of the prefabricated composite board developed in this study (generally higher than current ETICS). The testing procedure followed in this study is also meant to give a contribution to the establishment of methodologies for the selection and durability assessment of materials for the building envelope retrofitting. 相似文献

Soybean agglutinin (SBA) protein, also known as soybean lectin, is regarded as an anti‐nutrient due to its negative effect on the ability of monogastric animals to gain weight following consumption of raw soybean seed. Historically, SBA has been measured using a time‐consuming and cumbersome hemagglutination procedure. The objective of our research was to obtain a validated methodology that is precise and accurate in the measurement of SBA while allowing minimally equipped laboratories to effectively conduct the analysis, thus our focus was on evaluating an existing commercially available ELISA, an enzyme‐linked‐lectin‐assay (ELLA), and a hybrid ELISA/ELLA. A new ELLA technique that can detect and quantify lectins was chosen and modified specifically for the quantitation of SBA in soybean seed. The proposed ELLA methodology is similar to a standard sandwich ELISA, and uses polyacrylamide‐linked N‐acetylgalactosamine (Gal–NAc–PAA) for a capture phase and the biotinylated version (Gal–NAc–PAA–Biotin) for detection. Based upon the validation data, the ELLA method can precisely and accurately determine soybean lectin levels in soybean seed. The validated ELLA method was used to quantify SBA in nine commercial soybean varieties introduced between 1972 and 2008 and demonstrated that the natural variability of SBA is subject to the effects of genotype and environment. 相似文献

Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) is an additive manufacturing technique for the production of parts with complex geometry and it is especially appropriate for structural applications in aircraft and automotive industries. Aluminum-based metal matrix composites (MMCs) are promising materials for these applications because they are lightweight, ductile, and have a good strength-to-weight ratio This paper presents an investigation of microstructure, hardness, and tribological properties of AlSi10Mg alloy and AlSi10Mg alloy/TiB2 composites prepared by DMLS. MMCs were realized with two different compositions: 10% wt. of microsize TiB2, 1% wt. of nanosize TiB2. Wear tests were performed using a pin-on-disk apparatus on the prepared samples. Performances of AlSi10Mg samples manufactured by DMLS were also compared with the results obtained on AlSi10Mg alloy samples made by casting. It was found that the composites displayed a lower coefficient of friction (COF), but in the case of microsize TiB2 reinforcement the wear rate was higher than with nanosize reinforcements and aluminum alloy without reinforcement. AlSi10Mg obtained by DMLS showed a higher COF than AlSi10Mg obtained by casting, but the wear rate was higher in the latter case. 相似文献
