It is very difficult to have a clear and homogeneous idea of the embryo metabolism. In fact it may vary from one species to another and also according to the embryonic stage: i.e. before and after genomic activation. Basic compounds such as glucose may be toxic, but obviously, it is more the problem of the quantity introduced in the culture media and an unsuitable balance between the metabolites which may impair the embryonic development. At low concentration glucose is actively metabolised by embryos. High levels of amino acids are deleterious (due to release of ammonia), but they are necessary at low concentrations. Addition of serum or other biological fluids is generally useless. Further knowledge on embryo metabolism is necessary to avoid culture medium related delay or developmental blocks. Metabolic Effects of ω-3 Fatty Acids Biological effects of ω-3 fatty acids are related to their properties as structural components of cell membranes, their role as precursors of eicosanoids and their effects on lipoprotein metabolism. This is the basis for a great variety of metabolic effects, many of which of increasing medical interest. Particularly in the cardiovascular field, ω-3 fatty acids have been shown to have a wide spectrum of potentially antiatherogenic effects. Among these are the inhibition of platelet aggregation, reduction of blood viscosity, lowering of blood pressure and suppression of inflammatory reactions in the arteriosclerotic plaque. The principal actions in lipid metabolism are a reduction in triglycerides and a small increase in HDL2. The effect on LDL-cholesterol is complex and an adverse LDL-increase may occur in particular hyperlipoproteinemias. 相似文献

Laboratory studies indicate that capsaicin, the hot-tasting component of chili peppers, may be carcinogenic. A population-based case-control study was conducted in Mexico City during 1989-1990 to evaluate the relation between chili pepper consumption and gastric cancer risk. The study included 220 incident cases and 752 controls randomly selected from the general population. Information was collected by interview. Chili pepper consumers were at high risk for gastric cancer compared with nonconsumers (age- and sex-adjusted odds ratio = 5.49, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.72-11.06). Among consumers, there was a highly significant trend of increasing risk with increasing self-rated level of consumption (low, medium, and high) (p = 2 x 10(-7). The odds ratio for high-level consumers compared with nonconsumers was 17.11 (95% CI 7.78-37.59). However, when consumption was measured as frequency per day, a significant trend among consumers was not observed. Multivariable adjustment increased the magnitude of the chili pepper-gastric cancer association, but a significant trend among consumers (measured as frequency per day) was still not observed. Chili pepper consumption may be a strong risk factor for gastric cancer, but further studies are needed to test this hypothesis. 相似文献

A study has been made of the procedures used for the lap and butt welding of 0.62 and 1.16 mm thickness steel sheets coated with Al55-Zn alloy, using laser-beam technology. The main problems arise in lap welding as a result of zinc evaporation from the coating. The vapour pressures of this element lead to cratering and blistering of the welds which are visible from the external surface and imply severe weld defects. An efficient solution to this problem consists in leaving a gap between the internal faces, thus allowing the zinc vapours to escape. Excessive gaps, however, lead to the molten metal collapse and to lack of penetration. In the present work, acceptable results were obtained with a maximum interface separation of 0.1 mm. This allows excellent continuity of the joints, without cracks, pores or non-metallic inclusions and with moderate hardnesses, thus demonstrating the good laser weldability of the coated material. A difficulty arises, however, in relation to the coating in zones close to the weld. In these high-temperature zones the coating is lost, and in the immediately adjacent areas the coating microstructure and phases are altered, as was shown by scanning electron microscope analyses. 相似文献

An increasing flow of evidences collected on elementary forms of learning processes in selected animal models evidentiates some mechanisms which can represent the basic cellular principles underlying plastic changes: 1. 5HT and second messengers of nucleotide type (like cAMP) have a pivotal role in the learning process. 2. In almost all short-term learning processes the modifications are subserved by a mechanism of protein phosphorylation. 3. In various animal models the modulation of K+ and Ca2+ channels is the molecular mechanism for learning. Experiments performed in sensory T neuron of the leech indicate that the modulation of Na+/K+ electrogenic pump is one of the fundamental mechanism for learning. 4. In long-term plastic changes, the most important finding is that newly synthesized proteins are formed. 5. In addition to what has been observed in the Aplysia model, where changes in synaptic efficacy represent the basic principles of memory storage, in the leech it has been demonstrated that a molecular machinery present in a single neuron can adapt the activity of the cell to environmental stimuli. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the origin of the catecholaminergic inputs to the telencephalic basal ganglia of amphibians. For that purpose, retrograde tracing techniques were combined with tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemistry in the anurans Xenopus laevis and Rana perezi and the urodele Pleurodeles waltl. In all three species studied, a topographically organized dopaminergic projection was identified arising from the posterior tubercle/mesencephalic tegmentum and terminating in the striatum and the nucleus accumbens. Although essentially similar, the organization of the mesolimbic and mesostriatal connections in anurans seems to be more elaborate than in urodeles. The present study has also revealed the existence of a noradrenergic projection to the basal forebrain, which has its origin in the locus coeruleus. Additional catecholaminergic afferents to the striatum and the nucleus accumbens arise from the nucleus of the solitary tract, where catecholaminergic neurons appear to give rise to the bulk of the projections to the basal forebrain. In other regions, such as the olfactory bulb, the anterior preoptic area, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and the thalamus, retrogradely labeled neurons (after basal forebrain tracer-applications) and catecholaminergic cells were intermingled, but none of these centers contained double-labeled cell bodies. It is concluded that the origin of the catecholaminergic innervation of the striatum and the nucleus accumbens in amphibians is largely comparable to that in amniotes. The present study, therefore, strongly supports the existence of a common pattern in the organization of the catecholaminergic inputs to the basal forebrain among tetrapod vertebrates. 相似文献
