Smart antenna array technology has been shown to greatly improve the performance of wireless communication systems. In this
article, we describe the impact of smart antenna array processing at the mobile terminal for Wideband Code Division Multiple
Access (WCDMA) cellular networks. Using system simulations we demonstrate the quality of service, network coverage, and network
capacity improvement provided by a WCDMA dual antenna receiver and we establish a relationship between this improvement and
the link level performance. We then describe a receiver architecture for a dual antenna WCDMA mobile receiver. The proposed
receiver was implemented, as part of a complete mobile terminal solution, in an ASIC using a 0.18 μm, 1.8 V CMOS technology.
The ASIC was integrated with RF, analog and digital components in a PCMCIA card form factor. The PCMCIA is a 3GPP compliant
user equipment and has been submitted to standardized performance and conformance tests. Experimental measurements gathered
with the PCMCIA card illustrate the impact of a diversity enabled mobile data terminal on the link level performance. For
various propagation environments and transmission data rates, improvements in the range of 2.7 – 10 dB in the required DPCH

or for a 1% Block Error Rate (BLER) were observed. These measurements are within 1.4 dB of the ideal link level simulations
which indicates that the predicted improvement at the network level should also materialize. The results presented in this
paper show the tremendous potential of smart antenna arrays in 3G WCDMA cellular networks and establish diversity as a viable

The aim of this paper was to compare several in-vivo electrophysiological (EP) characteristics measured in a swine model of chronic infarct, with those predicted by simple 3-D MRI-based computer models built from ex-vivo scans (voxel size <1 mm(3)). Specifically, we recorded electroanatomical voltage maps (EAVM) in six animals, and ECG waves during induction of arrhythmia in two of these cases. The infarct heterogeneities (dense scar and border zone) as well as fiber directions were estimated using diffusion weighted DW-MRI. We found a good correspondence (r = 0.9) between scar areas delineated on the EAVM and MRI maps. For theoretical predictions, we used a simple two-variable macroscopic model and computed the propagation of action potential after application of a train of stimuli, with location and timing replicating the stimulation protocol used in the in-vivo EP study. Simulation results are exemplified for two hearts: one with noninducible ventricular tachycardia (VT), and another with a macroreentrant VT (for the latter, the average predicted VT cycle length was 273 ms, compared to a recorded VT of 250 ms). 相似文献

Contamination of Ready-To-Eat foods with Listeria monocytogenes can typically be traced back to post-processing contamination from environmental sources; contamination is often linked to subtypes that persist in food associated environments. Although phage-based biocontrol strategies have been proposed for controlling this pathogen, information on the efficacy of phage treatment against diverse L. monocytogenes subtypes from food associated environments is still limited. We identified subtypes that were repeatedly found (“persistent”) in a smoked fish processing facility by using EcoRI ribotyping data for isolates obtained in 1998–2009. PFGE analysis of 141 isolates (9 ribotypes) supported persistence for up to 11 years. Characterization of selected isolates, representing persistent subtypes, against a panel of 28 listeriaphages showed a wide range of likelihood of phage susceptibility, ranging from 4.6% (for 7 ribotype DUP-1043A isolates) to 95.4% (for 7 ribotype DUP-1044A isolates). In challenge studies with 105 and 106 CFU/ml L. monocytogenes, using phage cocktails and a commercial phage product at different phage-host ratios, one isolate (ribotype DUP-1043A) was not affected by any treatment. A reduction in L. monocytogenes counts of up to 4 log units was observed, after 8 h of treatment, in isolates of two ribotypes, but subsequent re-growth occurred. Survivor isolates obtained after 24 h of treatment showed decreased susceptibility to individual phages included in the phage cocktail, suggesting rapid emergence of resistant subtypes. 相似文献

Over the past years, both food researchers and food industry have shown an increased interest in finding techniques that can estimate modifications in quality, nutritional, and thermophysical properties of food products during processing and/or storage. For instance, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has attracted the interest of scientific community because only a small amount of sample is needed for analysis. Moreover, it does not require any specific sample preparation, and is a repeatable and reliable method. In addition, DSC methodology needs a short time for experiments compared with other techniques used for the same purpose. At this stage of investigation, there is a need to evaluate the commonly accepted and new emerging DSC applications to establish the optimum conditions of emerging processing. This paper reviews the current and new insights of DSC technique for the estimation of quality, nutritional, and thermophysical properties of food products during conventional and emerging processing and/or subsequent storage. The effects of stimulation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells in an aqueous suspension by pulsed electric field (PEF) with electric field strength E?=?20–2,000 V cm?1 and effective PEF treatment time t PEF?=?10?5–1 s were investigated. At relatively high electric field strengths (E?>?1,000 V cm?1) and moderate times of PEF treatment (t PEF?>?100 μs), the extraction of ionic components from yeast was observed, which can be related to electroporation of cell membranes. Petri dishes counting revealed dependency of the colony sizes on the time of preliminary fermentation t f and power consumption W. The “logarithmic” and “saturated” types of electrostimulation were distinguished. At “logarithmic” electrostimulation (10?7 J mL?1?W?10?1 J mL?1), the viability of yeast cells increased with the increase of power consumption and was higher for longer fermentation (t f ?=?24 h). However, at “saturated” electrostimulation (10?1 J mL?1?W?101 J mL?1), the viability of yeast cells was noticeably higher for t f ?=?1 h than for t f ?=?24 h. Fractionation and reconstitution techniques were used to study the contribution of endogenous flour lipids to the quality of short‐dough (shortcake type) biscuits. Biscuit flour was defatted with chloroform and baked with bakery fat, but without endogenous lipid. Short‐dough biscuits baked from defatted flour had smaller diameters, and were flatter, denser and harder than control biscuits. Defatted flour shortcake doughs exhibited different rheological behaviour from the control samples, showing higher storage and loss moduli (G′ and G″ values), ie higher viscoelasticity. Functionality was restored when total non‐starch flour lipids were added back to defatted flour. The polar lipid fraction had a positive effect in restoring flour quality whereas the non‐polar lipid fraction had no effect. Both fractions were needed for complete restoration of both biscuit quality and dough rheological characteristics. A study of the microstructure of defatted biscuits revealed that their gluten protein was more hydrated and developed than the gluten of the control biscuits. Pregnant women are 20 times more likely to develop listeriosis than are members of the general population, and infection can result in abortion, stillbirth, or neonatal illness. The objective of this study was to orally challenge pregnant guinea pigs with Listeria monocytogenes to assess maternal and fetal tissue invasion at postinoculation days 2, 6, 9, and 21. The time course of invasion was followed by fluorescence microscopy and a traditional culture method. Guinea pigs were treated on gestation day 35 with L. monocytogenes doses ranging from 10(4) to 10(8) CFU. L. monocytogenes was isolated and viewed in maternal and fetal tissues as early as 2 days postinoculation. L. monocytogenes was isolated from placentas, fetal livers and brains, and maternal spleens at similar rates, suggesting that invasion of the spleen could be indicative of fetal invasion. When comparing fecal shedding, all animals treated with 10(4) CFU were shedding L. monocytogenes by postinoculation day 7, and all animals treated with the higher doses (10(6) or 10(8) CFU) were shedding L. monocytogenes by postinoculation day 5. These data suggest that L. monocytogenes crosses the fetoplacental barrier and invades the fetus by day 2 after maternal ingestion. When comparing the sensitivities of microscopy and culture, neither method consistently detected L. monocytogenes at a higher rate. However, detection in individual tissues differed. Microscopy was significantly more sensitive with fetal liver (P<0.001) and brain (P<0.001) at the highest dose of 10(8) CFU, but at the lowest dose of 10(4) CFU culture was significantly more sensitive with maternal spleen (P=0.04). 相似文献

Carbonation reactions are central to the prospect of CO(2) trapping by mineralization in geologic reservoirs. In contrast to the relevant aqueous-mediated reactions, little is known about the propensity for carbonation in the key partner fluid: supercritical carbon dioxide containing dissolved water ("wet" scCO(2)). We employed in situ mid-infrared spectroscopy to follow the reaction of a model silicate mineral (forsterite, Mg(2)SiO(4)) for 24 h with wet scCO(2) at 50 °C and 180 atm. The results show a dramatic dependence of reactivity on water concentration and the presence of liquid water on the forsterite particles. Exposure to neat scCO(2) showed no detectable carbonation reaction. At 47% and 81% water saturation, an A?ngstrom-thick liquid-like water film was detected on the forsterite particles and less than 1% of the forsterite transformed. Most of the reaction occurred within the first 3 h of exposure to the fluid. In experiments at 95% saturation and with an excess of water (36% above water saturation), a nanometer-thick water film was detected, and the carbonation reaction proceeded continuously with approximately 2% and 10% conversion, respectively. Our collective results suggest constitutive links between water concentration, water film formation, reaction rate and extent, and reaction products in wet scCO(2). 相似文献
