Topographic and anatomic markers of the temporal pyramidal bone and their role in the surgical treatment of ear neoplasms

Topographic anatomical guide points were studied on 126 total preparations of the temporal bones. The relation of the temporal bone pyramid angles in sagittal and horizontal planes, the distance from spina suprameatum to the pyramid top, from spina suprameatum to promontorium, from promontorium to internal carotid artery with the shape of the skull has been established.     

A multimethod validation of two psychiatric rating scales.

Investigated the concurrent validity of the Psychotic Inpatient Profile (PIP) and the Nurses Observational Scale for Inpatient Evaluation (NOSIE-30) with 207 18–69 yr old prechronic psychiatric inpatients. Aides and professional observers also provided behavioral observations using the Time Sample Behavioral Checklist. Results show fairly good convergent and discriminant validity across instruments and across different raters. It is concluded that psychiatric rating scales, while an important approach to assessment, may not provide appropriate data for research requiring more direct assessment of patient's behavior on the ward. Screening of Ophiostoma Species for Removal of Eucalyptus Extractives

Abstract

Ophiostoma species have been demonstrated to metabolize wood extractives and be useful to the pulp and paper industry. In order to have new isolates for the Asian market, Eucalyptus camaldulensis logs were harvested from forest sites in central Taiwan and 28 strains of the Ophiostoma genus were isolated from them. These strains were subsequently inoculated onto Eucalyptus wood chips to evaluate their effects on weight losses of wood and the amounts of acetone extractives degraded. At the same time, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis was conducted and by using calibration curves and a database of GC-MS mass spectra, changes in lipophilic compounds were analyzed. Fatty acids, hydrocarbons, sterol compounds, sterol esters, and triglycerides were significantly reduced after two weeks’ inoculation by the fungal strains. The results show that six of the strains were capable of reducing the lipophilic fractions by more than 60% in a two-week treatment. DNA of the most effective strains were analyzed and found to be a variant of Ophiostoma querci.     

Estimation of Cooling Rates During Close-Coupled Gas Atomization Using Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing Measurement

Al-4 wt pct Cu alloy has been gas atomized using a commercial close-coupled gas-atomization system. The resulting metal powders have been sieved into six size fractions, and the SDAS has been determined using electron microscopy. Cooling rates for the powders have been estimated using a range of published conversion factors for Al-Cu alloy, with reasonable agreement being found between sources. We find that cooling rates are very low relative to those often quoted for gas-atomized powders, of the order of 10⁴ K s^?1 for sub-38 µm powders. We believe that a number of numerical studies of gas atomization have overestimated the cooling rate during solidification, probably as a consequence of overestimating the differential velocity between the gas and the particles. From the cooling rates measured in the current study, we estimate that such velocities are unlikely to exceed 20 m s^?1.     

Distribution of adenosine-5'-diphosphatase activity in the lactating bovine mammary gland.

A Ca2+- and Mg(2+)-stimulated adenosine-5'-diphosphatase has been found in lactating bovine mammary glands. The enzyme is associated with membranes of mitochondrial, microsomal, and Golgi apparatus fractions. The pH activity curves for the Golgi apparatus and microsomal fractions display two distinct maxima, one at pH 5.8 and the other between pH 7.4 and 8.4. Studies with activators and inhibitors indicate the enzyme is similar to adenosine-5'-diphosphatase found in other tissues. Its occurrence in the Golgi apparatus fraction indicates a possible role for this enzyme in the milk secretory process, particularly in ATP cycling in vesicles. Its occurrence in the microsomal fraction suggests a role in plasma membrane functioning.
