Toughening by Metallic Lamina in Nickel/Alumina Composites

Tape casting and hot-pressing were used to produce metal/ alumina laminate composites. The mechanical behavior of these laminates was characterized. The strength and toughness of the laminates were greatly improved in comparison to that of monolithic alumina. Indentation strength values of the laminates remained approximately constant for indent loads between 10 and 100 N. Thus, this type of laminate appears to be a good candidate for damage-tolerant composite material design.     

Point-based online value iteration algorithm in large POMDP

Partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) is an ideal framework for sequential decision-making under uncertainty in stochastic domains. However, it is notoriously computationally intractable to solving POMDP in real-time system. In order to address this problem, this paper proposes a point-based online value iteration (PBOVI) algorithm which involves performing value backup at specific reachable belief points, rather than over the entire belief simplex, to speed up computation processes, exploits branch-and-bound pruning approach to prune the AND/OR tree of belief states online, and proposes a novel idea to reuse the belief states that have been searched to avoid repeated computation. The experiment and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can simultaneously satisfy the requirement of low errors and high timeliness in real-time system.

Analysis of junction temperatures in high-power GaN-based LEDs

We presented the analysis of the incomplete conduction in bonding medium in high power GaN-based light-emitting diode (LED) packages. A numerical study was carried out with parametric model to understand the junction temperature variation due to bonding medium defects. Transient thermal measurement was performed to evaluate LED’s junction temperature. Thermal resistance from chip to lead frame was 20 K/W in our sample LED. It was suggested that only 60% of the surface area of the bonding medium was involved...     

Size and pressure effects on solid transition temperatures of ZrO2

Transition temperatures between tetragonal and monoclinic polymorphs of ZrO₂ nanoparticles, thin films and nanostructured materials are calculated by considering energetic contributions of surface (interface) energy and surface stress on total Gibbs free energy. The transition temperatures drop as the size of the nanocrystals decreases, which is consistent with available results.

Survey of control performance in quantum information processing

There is a rich variety of physics underlying the fundamental gating operations for quantum information processing (QIP). A key aspect of a QIP system is how noise may enter during quantum operations and how suppressing or correcting its effects can best be addressed. Quantum control techniques have been developed to specifically address this effort, although a detailed classification of the compatibility of controls schemes with noise sources found in common quantum systems has not yet been performed. This work numerically examines the performance of modern control methods for suppressing decoherence in the presence of noise forms found in viable quantum systems. The noise-averaged process matrix for controlled one-qubit and two-qubit operations are calculated across noise found in systems driven by Markovian open quantum dynamics. Rather than aiming to describe the absolute best control scheme for a given physical circumstance, this work serves instead to classify quantum control behavior across a large class of noise forms so that opportunities for improving QIP performance may be identified.
