Speciation of copper in high chloride concentrations,in the context of corrosion of copper canisters
Canisters with a cast iron insert for mechanical strength and a 50-mm thick copper shell as corrosion protection are planned to be used for disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Sweden and Finland. Chloride can be considered “beneficial”, as it promotes active dissolution of copper rather than passivation (which might result in pitting), but a high concentration of chloride in solution would increase the driving force for corrosion through the formation of soluble copper chloro complexes. Thermodynamic calculations are performed in this study with the PHREEQC software and three of its accompanying databases, and a comparison with experimental data is performed to select the database to be used when evaluating repository performance. The activity coefficient models are given special attention. For the assessment of chloride-assisted corrosion of a KBS-3 canister, chloride concentrations pessimistically up to 5 mol/kg are used (in Finland and Sweden, the groundwater and bentonite porewater chloride concentrations are not expected to exceed 1 mol/kg). Background: Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists are key immunomodulatory factors that can markedly ameliorate or exacerbate hypoxic–ischemic brain injury. We recently demonstrated that central infusion of the TLR7 agonist Gardiquimod (GDQ) following asphyxia was highly neuroprotective after 3 days but not 7 days of recovery. We hypothesize that this apparent transient neuroprotection is associated with modulation of seizure-genic processes and hemodynamic control. Methods: Fetuses received sham asphyxia or asphyxia induced by umbilical cord occlusion (20.9 ± 0.5 min) and were monitored continuously for 7 days. GDQ 3.34 mg or vehicle were infused intracerebroventricularly from 1 to 4 h after asphyxia. Results: GDQ infusion was associated with sustained moderate hypertension that resolved after 72 h recovery. Electrophysiologically, GDQ infusion was associated with reduced number and burden of postasphyxial seizures in the first 18 h of recovery (p < 0.05). Subsequently, GDQ was associated with induction of slow rhythmic epileptiform discharges (EDs) from 72 to 96 h of recovery (p < 0.05 vs asphyxia + vehicle). The total burden of EDs was associated with reduced numbers of neurons in the caudate nucleus (r2 = 0.61, p < 0.05) and CA1/2 hippocampal region (r2 = 0.66, p < 0.05). Conclusion: These data demonstrate that TLR7 activation by GDQ modulated blood pressure and suppressed seizures in the early phase of postasphyxial recovery, with subsequent prolonged induction of epileptiform activity. Speculatively, this may reflect delayed loss of early protection or contribute to differential neuronal survival in subcortical regions. 相似文献

In this paper, analytical studies have been conducted on the flow and thermal fields of unsteady compressible viscous oscillating flow through channels filled with porous media representing stacks in thermoacoustic systems. The flow in the porous material is described by the Brinkman–Forchheimer–extended Darcy model. Analytical expressions for oscillating velocity, temperature, and energy flux density are obtained after linearizing and solving the governing differential equations with long wave, short stack, and small amplitude oscillation approximations. Experimental work is also conducted to verify the temperature difference obtained across the porous stack ends. To produce the experimental results, a thermoacoustic heat pump is designed and constructed where reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) is used as the stack material. A very good agreement is obtained between the modeling and the experimental results. The expression of temperature difference across the stack ends obtained in the present study is also compared with the existing thermoacoustic literature. The proposed expression surpasses the existing expression available in the literature. The system of equations developed in the present study is a helpful tool for thermal engineers and physicist to design porous stacks for thermoacoustic devices. 相似文献

Samples of fine particulate matter were collected in a roadway tunnel near Houston, TX over a period of 4 days during two separate sampling periods: one sampling period from 1200 to 1400 local time and another sampling period from 1600 to 1800 local time. During the two sampling periods, the tunnel traffic contained roughly equivalent numbers of heavy-duty diesel trucks. However, during the late afternoon sampling period, the tunnel contained twice as many light-duty gasoline-powered vehicles. The effect of this shift in the vehicle fleet affects the overall emission index (grams pollutant emitted per kilogram carbon in fuel) for fine particles and fine particulate elemental carbon. Additionally, this shift in the fraction of diesel vehicles in the tunnel is used to determine if the chemical mass balancing techniques used to track emissions from gasoline-powered and diesel-powered emissions accurately separates these two emission categories. The results show that the chemical mass balancing calculations apportion roughly equal amounts of the particulate matter measured to diesel vehicles between the two periods and attribute almost twice as much particulate matter in the late afternoon sampling period to gasoline vehicles. Both of these results are consistent with the traffic volume of gasoline and diesel vehicles in the tunnel in the two separate periods and validate the ability for chemical mass balancing techniques to separate these two primary sources of fine particles. 相似文献

Since the initial report in 1978 of galactopoietic effects of a photoperiod of 16 h of light:8 h of darkness, numerous studies have confirmed long-day stimulation of milk yield. The endocrine factor(s) responsible for increased milk yield, however, has eluded identification. Recent studies suggest that insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) may mediate the galactopoietic response to long day photoperiod. Indeed, long days increase IGF-I in heifers and lactating cows; in the latter case, the response preceded an increase in milk yield. In heifers and cows, the increase in IGF-I is independent of changes in circulating growth hormone. Melatonin feeding to mimic a short-day photoperiod suppressed the increase of IGF-I in heifers induced by long days. However, melatonin feeding had no effect on milk yield in cows. Despite lack of resolution of the endocrine mechanism, dairy producers are interested in how photoperiod management can be integrated with current practices throughout the lactation cycle. There is strong evidence that milk yield responses to long days persist through an entire lactation. Also, long days can be combined with bovine somatotropin (bST) to produce additive increases in milk yield. During the dry period, long days increase the periparturient surge of prolactin. However, relative to long days, short-day treatment during the dry period produces the largest magnitude of response in milk yield during the subsequent lactation. The response to short days during the dry period may be due to a priming effect on the photoperiodic response system. In summary, IGF-I has emerged as a possible mediator of the increase of milk yield in response to long-day photoperiod. Photoperiod can be combined effectively with other management techniques such as bST. Consideration of photoperiod management during the dry period is essential to maximize responses during the subsequent lactation. 相似文献

Characterizations of the risks associated with foodborne pathogens are dependent on the availability of information on the population's exposure to the biological agents. However, by itself, exposure data are insufficient to assess the public health impact of pathogenic microorganisms. This requires the availability of effective dose-response models. Successful development of models that describe dose-response relations for enteric pathogens is dependent on a sound understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenicity associated with individual pathogens. This includes knowledge of how the various pathogen, host, and food matrix factors influence pathogenicity. Currently, a group of sigmoidal mathematical equations are used to empirically describe dose-response relations. While these have proven to be highly useful, advances in microbial food safety risk assessment will likely require the development of mechanistic models that more effectively consider the range of factors that influence the frequency and severity of foodborne infections in a population. 相似文献

Gravity and magnetism are implemented to change the morphology of zinc oxide nanorod sensors during synthesis. The effects of gravity and magnetism can translate into future application of these nanorods through cost‐effective, environmentally friendly, and easy‐to‐use biosensor technology with the quickest available sensing. The sensors can pave the way toward detection of both bacteria and fungi present on the surface with high sensitivity. This ability to sense microorganisms in a “non‐solution‐based” environment represents a key step forward in the fields of health and food safety, as well as solid‐state nanomaterial biotechnology applications. Hundreds of thousands of people are affected each year by accidental contamination and current protocols are far from preventative. The results of the magnetic field studies when compared with previous results show that the following factors affect the outcome of applying magnetic field during the growth of nanorods on their morphology: the direction of growth with respect to gravity, the method of seeding, and the substrate. 相似文献

A heterojunction interfacial workfunction internal photoemission (HEIWIP) terahertz detector with ~1times1018cm-3 n-type doped GaAs emitters in a multilayer GaAs/Al0.13Ga0.87 As heterostructure is presented. The detection mechanism is based on free carrier absorption with a broad response extending to ~ 5.26 THz (57 mum), corresponding to an effective workfunction of ~ 21.8 meV, which is much smaller than the offset expected for an Al fraction of x = 0.13 at a 1times1018 cm-3 doping. This is attributed to a reduction of the conduction band offset by interface dipole formation between the accumulated negative charges at the interface states and migrated positively charged donors in the barrier. The device has a peak responsivity of 0.32 A/W at ~ 26 mum at 5 K. It is demonstrated that the dopant migration-induced interface dipole effect can be used to extend the zero response threshold frequency (f 0) of n-type HEIWIP detectors. 相似文献

Microbiological criteria, food safety objectives and performance objectives, and the relationship between them are discussed and described in the context of risk-based food safety management. A modified method to quantify the sensitivity of attributes sampling plans is presented to show how sampling plans can be designed to assess a microbiological criterion. Examples presented show that testing of processed foods for confirmation of safety is often not a practical option, because too many samples would need to be analysed. Nonetheless, in such cases the classical “ICMSF cases” and sampling schemes still offer a risk-based approach for examining food lots for regulatory or trade purposes. 相似文献
