Advances in research on disability and rehabilitation are essential to creating equal opportunity, economic self-sufficiency, and full participation for persons with disabilities. Historically, such initiatives have focused on separate and specific areas, including neuroscience, molecular biology and genetics, gerontology, engineering and physical sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. Research on persons with disabilities should examine the broader context and trends of society that affect the total environment of persons with disabilities. This article examines the various disability paradigms across time, assessing the relative contribution of the socioecological perspective in guiding research designed to improve the lives of persons with disabilities. The authors recommend new research directions that include a focus on life span issues, biomedicine, biotechnology, the efficacy and effectiveness of current interventions, an emphasis on consumer-driven investigations within a socioecological perspective of disability, and the implications for research and practice. ABSTRACT Research results concerning the simulation of the crushing behaviour of composite systems with energy absorption characteristics are presented in the present work. The study is focused on the ‘tensor skin’ concept, an energy absorbing composite system that was originally developed to improve the crashworthiness of helicopters under water impact and which is promising for utilization in the construction of the lower part of composite fuselage aircraft. The ‘tensor skin’ concept comprises a folded or corrugated composite construction, which upon loading unfolds by forming ‘plastic hinges’, leading to an increase in the load bearing capability of the structure. The numerical modelling issues and the critical aspects of the simulation are discussed. Verification of the numerical simulation procedure is performed by experimental work. The experimental results utilized to assess and validate the numerical procedure were derived within the European Research Project ‘Design for Crash Survivability – CRASURV’ (BRITE – Aeronautics Area). We study the degradation of the mechanical and corrosion properties of 17G1S steel in gas mains as a result of operation for
28–40 yr. We reveal the simultaneous decrease in its strength and hardness, on the one hand, and impact toughness and crack
resistance, on the other hand. The indicated parameters prove to be most sensitive to the in-service degradation of the metal.
The degradation of steel leads to the increase in the strain-hardening coefficient and the appearance of the yield plateau
in the tensile stress-strain diagram and causes the appearance of sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement increasing in the
process of operation. We analyze the role of absorbed hydrogen affecting the mechanism of strain aging and responsible for
the appearance of defects. It is shown that the polarization resistance can be used not only for monitoring of the corrosion
state of gas pipelines but also for the prediction of changes in their mechanical properties in the process of operation.

Banded defects are often found in high-pressure die castings. These bands can contain segregation, porosity, and/or tears,
and changing casting conditions and alloy are known to change the position and make-up of the bands. Due to the complex, dynamic
nature of the high-pressure die-casting (HPDC) process, it is very difficult to study the effect of individual parameters
on band formation. In the work presented here, bands of segregation similar to those found in cold-chamber HPDC aluminum alloys
were found in laboratory gravity die castings. Samples were cast with a range of fraction solids from 0 to 0.3 and the effect
of die temperature and external solid fraction on segregation bands was investigated. The results are considered with reference
to the rheological properties of the filling semisolid metal and a formation mechanism for bands is proposed by considering

The influence which the composition of powder mixtures, the treatment conditions which the mixtures are subjected to, and the conditions under which the hot-pressed composite materials B4C – (5-10 mass%) calcium-silicon are fabricated exert on the structure, nature of failure, and mechanical properties of these materials is investigated. Optimum properties are possessed by material containing 10 mass% of addition. It is shown that the structure, morphology, and dispersivity, as well as the nature of the distribution of the components that are added to the composite material (secondary phase) vary as the temperature of hot pressing changes. Maximal mechanical characteristics of the composite material (σbend = 560 MPa, K 1c = 4.7 MPa·m1/2, HV = 37 GPa) are attained at hot-pressing temperatures in the range 2000-2100°C. 相似文献

An advanced learning system for interactive simulation of patient cases (ISP) is described. The system was designed to meet specific pedagogical needs where student activation and problem orientation were two of the key issues. The system includes features such as video based illness history-taking function using free text input, highly interactive physiological examination procedures, extensive laboratory tests and detailed user feedback. The system was constructed mainly in Authorware Professional, starting more than 10 years ago, and it is now available in refined versions in different languages. Twelve pedagogical and three technical features were initially defined for the project. All of these aims were fulfilled. The ISP system has been successfully used in education, and in international collaboration, including three applicability field tests. The use of a commercial optical time domain reflectometry device for simultaneous wavelength and time domain multiplexing of fiber-optic Bragg grating sensors is proposed and demonstrated. The realization of such systems provides an inexpensive way of interrogating several hundreds of sensors in a single fiber. A new diffuser capable of scattering light in one direction (one-dimensional diffuser) has been developed and experimentally
tested. The diffuser is formed in a thick layer of dichromated gelatin. The scattering indicatrices of the diffuser measured
in two mutually perpendicular directions are presented. It is demonstrated that the indicatrix width in one direction is significantly
greater than that in the perpendicular direc-tion. However, no zero-order diffraction has been observed. The proposed one-dimensional
