Traditional ‘in situ’ measurement techniques often fail to record the spatial distribution of floodplains. In that case, remote sensing provides inexpensive and reliable methodologies to map flooded areas and compute flood damage. The identification and monitoring of floods, due to their highly dynamic nature, require the use of high-time-resolution satellite images with the drawback that such images usually have low to medium spatial resolution. In this context, the traditional classification techniques would not be suitable for delineating floods because they use ‘hard methods’ of classification, where the coarse pixel is assigned to a unique land cover class, generating inaccurate maps of the flooded area. In contrast, the ‘soft methods’ assign several land cover classes within the coarse pixels. In this article, the theoretical basis regarding an innovative methodology of sub-pixel analysis (SA) to identify flooded areas is developed. The improvement in flood delineation is achieved with the use of primary topographic attributes, which stem from a digital elevation model (DEM). The methodology was applied to the monitoring of flood events in the lower Senegal River Valley, using satellite images with moderate spatial resolution. The proposed methodology was demonstrated to be effective for mapping the flood extent: the correct mapping of flooded areas was about 80% in all considered regions, whilst the better performance of supervised classification was 53%.  相似文献

Annual anomalies of Lambertian equivalent reflectivity (LER) retrieved from the total ozone mapping spectrometer spanning the period November 1978–November 2005 were studied in the Southern Hemisphere, in a region bounded by 0° S and 60° S, and their trends were estimated. With the exception of few regions where the variable may represent the contribution of both cloudiness and snow, trends in LER anomalies provided an evolution of total cloudiness. On average, the study region experienced a net increase in LER values of 0.78 reflectivity units (RU) decade?1; if only significant trend values are considered this figure increased to 1.18 RU decade?1. The region that showed the largest upward trend, up to 4 RU decade?1, was located over the eastern Pacific, off the coasts of Chile and Peru, where the presence of marine stratocumulus is frequent. Despite the overall positive trend there were regions that yielded a negative one, most notably the tropical latitudes of South America and Africa. The yearly zonal means also showed a positive trend at all latitudes, but significance occurred beyond 20° S only. Correlation maps between LER anomalies and five different circulation indices were also introduced. The indices with the highest and lowest number of significant correlation values were the Madden–Julian oscillation at 70° E and the quasi-biennial Oscillation, respectively.  相似文献

A community within a graph can be broadly defined as a set of vertices that exhibit high cohesiveness (relatively high number of edges within the set) and low conductance (relatively low number of edges leaving the set). Community detection is a fundamental graph processing analytic that can be applied to several application domains, including social networks. In this context, communities are often overlapping, as a person can be involved in more than one community (e.g., friends, and family); and evolving, since the structure of the network changes. We address the problem of streaming overlapping community detection, where the goal is to maintain communities in the presence of streaming updates. This way, the communities can be updated more efficiently. To this end, we introduce SONIC—a find-and-merge type of community detection algorithm that can efficiently handle streaming updates. SONIC first detects when graph updates yield significant community changes. Upon the detection, it updates the communities via an incremental merge procedure. The SONIC algorithm incorporates two additional techniques to speed-up the incremental merge; min-hashing and inverted indexes. Results show that SONIC can provide high quality overlapping communities, while handling streaming updates several orders of magnitude faster than the alternatives performing from-scratch computation.  相似文献

In arid and semi-arid ecosystems, salinisation and desertification are the most common processes of land degradation, and satellite data may provide a valuable tool to assess land surface condition and vegetation status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capability of Landsat 8 OLI (Operational Land Imager) remote sensing information and broadband indices derived from it, to monitor above ground biomass (AGB) and salinity in two different semiarid saline environments (unit a and unit b) in the Bahía Blanca Estuary. Unit a (Ua) is composed of bushes of Cyclolepis genistoides in association with Atriplex undulata and 41% of bare soil. Unit b (Ub) is composed of dense thickets of Allenrolfea patagonica in association with C. genistoides and 34% of bare soil. Pearson’s correlation analyses were performed between field estimates of AGB and salinity (soil salinity and interstitial water salinity) and remote sensing estimates. Satellite data include surface reflectance of individual bands, vegetation indices (NDVI [normalised difference vegetation index], SAVI [soil-adjusted vegetation index], MSAVI2 [modified soil-adjusted vegetation index], NDII [normalised difference infrared index], GNDVI [green normalised difference vegetation index], GRNDI [green-red normalised difference index], OSAVI [optimised soil-adjusted vegetation index], SR [simple ratio]), and salinity indices (SI1, SI2, SI3 [salinity index 1, 2 and 3, respectively] and BI [brightness index]). Correlation analyses involving AGB were performed twice; first considering all months and then again excluding the months with higher soil salinities. In Ua, soil adjusted vegetation indices SAVI and MSAVI2 showed to be suitable to detect changes in the total green AGB and C. genistoides green AGB (the major contributor to total green AGB). After excluding data from December and January (the months with the highest soil salinity), green AGB of A. undulata also showed a significant positive correlation with soil adjusted indices SAVI, MSAVI2 and OSAVI. Although proportionally this species was not a large contributor to the total biomass, it is characterised by a high leaf reflectance, which makes it suitable for biomass retrieval. In Ub, significant positive correlations were obtained between NDVI, SAVI, NDII, OSAVI and SR indices and the AGB green ratio, but significant negative correlations were obtained between A. patagonica red AGB and these vegetation indices. When December and January were excluded from the analysis the negative correlations between vegetation indices NDVI, OSAVI and SR and red AGB remained significant (r = ?0.68, ?0.76 and ?0.7, respectively). The positive correlations between these indices and AGB green ratio (r = 0.73, 0.78 and 0.75, respectively) remained significant as well. Significant negative correlations were also found between NDVI, NDII, GNDVI, OSAVI and SR indices and field salinity estimates. As soil salinisation induces A. patagonica reddening, red AGB and soil salinity covariate in the field, and the negative correlation with vegetation indices may be useful to retrieve information on both variables combined, which are indicative of water stress. Correlation analysis between field estimates of salinity and spectral salinity indices showed significant positive correlation for all the tested indices. The obtained results highlight the importance of a thoughtful selection of remote sensing indices to account for changes in vegetation biomass, especially in arid and semiarid environments particularly sensitive to desertification and salinisation. Also, ground truth cannot be overlooked, and field work is necessary to test index performance in every case.  相似文献

The Driver Behavior Questionnaire (DBQ) is a self-report measure of driving behavior that has been widely used over more than 20 years. Despite this wealth of evidence a number of questions remain, including understanding the correlation between its violations and errors sub-components, identifying how these components are related to crash involvement, and testing whether a DBQ based on a reduced number of items can be effective. We address these issues using a bifactor modeling approach to data drawn from the UK Cohort II longitudinal study of novice drivers. This dataset provides observations on 12,012 drivers with DBQ data collected at .5, 1, 2 and 3 years after passing their test. A bifactor model, including a general factor onto which all items loaded, and specific factors for ordinary violations, aggressive violations, slips and errors fitted the data better than correlated factors and second-order factor structures. A model based on only 12 items replicated this structure and produced factor scores that were highly correlated with the full model. The ordinary violations and general factor were significant independent predictors of crash involvement at 6 months after starting independent driving. The discussion considers the role of the general and specific factors in crash involvement.  相似文献

Given the high energy consumption connected to old buildings and their large environmental impact, there is a strong need for effective solutions for the building envelope retrofitting. Among these solutions, external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) have found large application in recent decades. In this paper a new kind of large-size thermal insulation composite boards, prefabricated using porcelain stoneware slab finishing, was developed. Different thermal insulating materials and adhesives, with and without glass fibre mesh, were tested by both current methodologies and purposely designed tests, in order to assess their physical–mechanical properties and durability performance, finally selecting the most suitable materials for the composite board. The strong points of this composite board are mainly: (i) its short placing time and improved execution quality, due to prefabrication; (ii) its high aesthetical value; (iii) its high durability, as the finishing layer is mostly insensible to weathering. The results highlight the good performances of the prefabricated composite board developed in this study (generally higher than current ETICS). The testing procedure followed in this study is also meant to give a contribution to the establishment of methodologies for the selection and durability assessment of materials for the building envelope retrofitting.  相似文献

The possibilities and limitations of gel chromatography of non-modified cellulose on inorganic supports in the complex solvent cadoxen are shown. The GPC fractionation in this system is possible but the evaluation of the analytical data would be rather complicated.
