Effect of different antisera on the magnitude of the immune response following induction of antibody formation by allogenic macrophages

Data are presented on the effect of different antisera on the antibody-genesis induction by immune allogeneic macrophages. Significant decrease of the immune response was shown after administration of both alloantiserum and antimacrophagal serum during the first two days after the allogeneic macrophages transfer. Injection of these sera at the subsequent days did not significantly influence the entensity of the immune response. Antierythrocytic serum inhibits accumulation of antibody-producing cells when administered at different periods of time after allogeneic macrophages transplantation.     

Lymphocele: an unusual mass in the right upper quadrant

A patient with a palpable right upper abdominal mass eight years after cholecystectomy was found to have a subhepatic lymphocele. Although this is an uncommon location, the presence of a sonolucent mass in an area of previous surgery suggests lymphocele.

The nucleation and crystal growth of calcium oxalate were studied under different conditions using a nephelometer to measure the turbidities of suspensions produced when dilute solutions of calcium chloride dihydrate and sodium oxalate were mixed. The amount of material produced was less when calcium was in excess of oxalate than vice versa. For equimolar amounts of the precipitating reagents the rate of formation of calcium oxalate was rapid when calcium and oxalate concentrations were 1-25 mmol/l. but slow when they were 0-5mmol/l. Sodium citrate and heparin inhibited nucleation and crystal growth and at certain concentrations prevented nucleation for the duration of the experiment. The method is simple and quick and requires only a small amount of material.

Function of the p53-pRb-dependent path after exposure to DNA damaging agents in rats embryonal fibroblast cells, transformed by E1A and Ha-Ras oncogenes

The packing of the G-actin monomers within crystalline actin tubes was investigated at atomic detail. To achieve this, we have chosen an integrated structural approach which combines intermediate resolution electron microscopy based 3-D reconstruction and surface metal shadowing of crystalline actin tubes with atomic resolution X-ray data of the G-actin monomer. Distinct from the parallel, half-staggered packing of the actin subunits within F-actin filaments, the arrangement of actin monomers within the crystalline tubes involves antiparallel packing into dimers with p2 symmetry. Within the crystalline tubes, the actin monomers are oriented so that the filament axis runs parallel with the sheet plane and the intersubunit contacts in this direction are similar to those existing along the two long-pitch helical strands of the F-actin filament. The other intersubunit contacts within the crystalline tubes are not found in the actin filament. The ability of actin to form a variety of polymorphic oligomers is still not fully understood, and the functional implications of this variability have yet to be deciphered. Regularly packed actin assemblies such as sheets, tubes or ribbons may ultimately yield structural relationships to in vivo relevant actin oligomers such as, for example, the "lower dimer".     

A method for intermittent hypoxic exposures in the combined treatment of bronchial asthma patients

The method of intermittent increasing normobaric isocapnic hypoxia was used for the treatment of bronchial asthma. The parameters of respiration, metabolism, free-radical processes and immune system were monitored before and after training. The therapeutic diagnostic complex "Hypotron" (Ukraine), which allowed to determine the individual reactivity of the patient's respiratory system, tolerance to hypoxia, and to choose an optimal program of treatment, was used. The hypoxic training resulted in considerable increase of lung vital capacity, maximal ventilation and forced expired velocity. Normalization of initially increased free radical processes, accompanied by a decrease in the lipid peroxidation products was observed. The hypoxic training positively influenced specific and nonspecific immunological status, and appeared to be associated with a far better stimulation of lymphocytes and neutrophils.     

Thick dye-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) films for real-time holography

Molding and direct-polymerization techniques are used for the fabrication of holographic materials based on dye-doped poly(methyl methacrylate). The thickness of the samples obtained ranges from several micrometers to several millimeters. Pump-signal cross modulation is studied experimentally, and photophysical mechanisms responsible for refractive-index and absorption changes are discussed. Self-developing intensity and polarization holographic recording capability, strong anisotropy of diffraction, and high angular selectivity are demonstrated in thick samples.
