A study was carried out to determine the effect of protein deficiency on the phagocytic function of blood neutrophils and of peritoneal exudate of rats. The deficient animals exhibited significantly lower leukocyte and neutrophil values, as well as NBT reduction and diminished peroxidase and bactericidal capacity. Englobement of S. aureus and latex particles was found to be normal in both groups. Alkaline phosphatase activity in the neutrophils appear to be increased in the deficient animals.  相似文献

An integrated multibeam echo sounder and acoustic Doppler current profiler field survey was conducted in July 2008 to investigate the morphodynamics of the St. Clair River at the outlet of Lake Huron. The principal morphological features of the upper St. Clair River included flow-transverse bedforms that appear weakly mobile, erosive bedforms in cohesive muds, thin non-cohesive veneers of weakly mobile sediment that cover an underlying cohesive (till or glacio-lacustrine) surface, and vegetation that covers the bed. The flow was characterized by acceleration as the banks constrict from Lake Huron into the St. Clair River, an approximately 1500-m long region of flow separation downstream from the Blue Water Bridge, and secondary flow connected to: i) channel curvature; ii) forcing of the flow by local bed topography, and iii) flow wakes in the lee side of ship wrecks. Nearshore, sand-sized, sediment from Lake Huron was capable of being transported into, and principally along, the banks of the upper St. Clair River by the measured flow. A comparison of bathymetric surveys conducted in 2007 and 2008 identifies that the gravel bed does undergo slow downstream movement, but that this movement does not appear to be generated by the mean flow, and could possibly be caused by ship-propeller-induced turbulence. The study results suggest that the measured mean flow and dredging within the channel have not produced major scour of the upper St. Clair River and that the recent fall in the level of Lake Huron is unlikely to have been caused by these mechanisms.  相似文献

Variations in water level observed in Lakes Michigan and Huron during the last few decades have motivated a comprehensive study involving climatic, hydrologic and hydraulic factors organized by International Joint Commission of the Great Lakes. It has been submitted, among other possible causes, that changes in conveyance in the St. Clair River could be contributing to the lowering of the upper Great Lakes water level. Sediment transport processes, in particular bed scour and erosion, can affect significantly a river's conveyance, thus creating the need to assess the erodibility properties of the river bed. To this end, laboratory tests were performed in order to obtain the value of the critical shear stress needed to erode the cohesive fraction of the bed sediment material, known as glacial till, from the St. Clair River. Different flows with increasing velocities were run up to the point where initial sediment erosion could be observed. Through detailed near-bed velocity measurements using a laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) system, a value of 4.2 N/m2 was obtained as the critical shear stress for the erosion of glacial till. A threshold for the critical shear stress for erosion of similar cohesive sediments was also found and expressed in dimensionless form. These results could be used in combination with mathematical models to estimate the risk of scour and erosion at locations where the glacial till is exposed to both strong currents and flow forces induced by the large navigation vessels commonly observed along the course of the St. Clair River.  相似文献

In the first part of this study, a new method for solving the problem of kinematic analysis was presented, based on the concepts of “basic coordinates” and “link constraint equations”. In this second part, these same concepts are used to solve the problems of initial position, finite displacements and static equilibrium position of a mechanism with springs between its links. The proposed algorithms are elementary in their formulation and of exceptional efficiency in their performance. The methods describes are based on the solution of a problem of mathematical programming. Several examples are presented, giving an idea of the potential of said algorithms.  相似文献

In a previous paper we have shown the added value of using LDS to monitor flocculation. It can supply, simultaneously, information on flocs size and structure and enlighten flocculation kinetics and mechanisms. In this paper, LDS is applied to study deflocculation and reflocculation processes of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) induced by cationic polyacrylamides, when different types of shear forces are applied. LDS can detect the influence of polymer characteristics and concentration as well as of the type of shearing, on flocs resistance and reflocculation degree, which depend on flocs structure and on the type of bonds between particles. As expected, flocs formed by bridging mechanism reflocculate with difficulty while flocs formed by patching reflocculate to a higher degree. Flocs resulting from reflocculation are more compact than the original ones, as assessed by the mass fractal dimension. Reflocculation is also lower when the flocs are submitted to superficial shearing than when they are submitted to sonication. Shearing induced by sonication is sufficient to break down the flocs in many fragments while the increase of pump speed only detaches particles by erosion, at the flocs surface, where bonds are weaker. Results prove that LDS is useful to monitor deflocculation and reflocculation processes and to predict floc resistance under different conditions. Moreover, the whole study demonstrates the benefit of using LDS for a complete evaluation of flocculants performance in the different stages of flocculation: aggregation, stabilization, deflocculation and reflocculation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Microencapsulation technology promises new applications such as intelligent microstructures, phase change materials and self‐healing composites. Microcapsule synthesis and characterization have been researched extensively; however, the well‐known polymerization between epoxy resins and carboxylic acids has not been used to prepare microcapsules. RESULTS: Microcapsules were prepared by interfacial polymerization of an oil‐in‐water emulsion which contained a commercial epoxy resin and multifunctional carboxylic acids. The microcapsules obtained were characterized using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Experiments performed at lower stirring rates led to larger microcapsules, in the range 100–400 µm, while higher stirring rates resulted in microcapsules in the range 10–50 µm. CONCLUSIONS: Microcapsules can be prepared by interfacial polymerization of epoxy resins, an extensively studied and widely used class of polymers. By means of NMR characterization we gained insight into the mechanism of polymerization at the interface wherein products coming from the more hindered ring opening as well as from intermolecular transesterification are identified. Solid photocatalysts in which the 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium (TP) or 2,4,6-triphenylthiapyrylium cation (TTP) are encapsulated within zeolite Y or deposited on mesoporous silica are used as photosensitizers for the oxidation of sulfides, both aromatic and aliphatic, in solvents of various polarity. Contrary to the same cations in solution, these solid sensitizers are not significantly degraded during operation. An effective oxygenation takes place leading to sulfoxides, disulfides, sulfinic and sulfenic esters as well as sulfonic acids. This large scope method shows a limited dependence on the substrate structure and on conditions and is suitable for the abatement of sulfur-containing pollutants.  相似文献

This work aims at investigating the impact of the addition of superplasticizer and of ultra-fine particles, namely of silica fume and of precipitated titania, on the rheological behaviour of water-lean mortar pastes. The pastes are characterised in terms of their spread, their flowing behaviour and by means of performing a shear test, giving access to viscosity/shear gradient correlations. Adding superplasticizer is shown to shift the onset of shear thickening of the referring pastes to higher shear rates and to attenuate its otherwise rapid evolution, possibly by means of favouring steric particle-particle interactions. The workability of these mortars, which is characterised in terms of spread values and draining, is also improved. For the case of fly ash based mortars, adding ultra-fine particles is another way of (slightly) “retarding” shear thickening and of attenuating its evolution, possibly because of resulting in - on the average - lower hydrodynamic forces and reduced attractive Van der Waals interactions between particles. However, at the same time these mortars are characterised by a worsening in workability which is attributed to the huge amount of surface area provided by the ultra-fines.  相似文献

After the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, the increase in urban and agricultural water demand and the increased flow of poorly treated sewage had a severe impact in one of the most ecologically important rivers in Israel, the Yarqon. The attempt to reverse this situation began with the creation of the Yarqon River Authority in 1988. In the last 20 years, the authority has implemented or collaborated in several projects that have significantly contributed to enhancing the provision of ecological services. This article aims to analyze the case of the pollution and subsequent rehabilitation of aquatic ecosystem services in the Israeli water-scarcity context.  相似文献

This work used the General Rate Model (GRM) to evaluate the experimental data of α-lactalbumin (α-la) and β-lactoglobulin (β-lg) mass transfer using size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The chromatographic simulation has become necessary in large scale production processes. Mathematical models have been used for the optimization and control of different operating conditions of the process, as well as providing calculations for the process scale-up. For the SEC experiments, the aqueous biphasic system was composed of polyethylene glycol 1500 g/mol, potassium phosphate and whey protein isolate. The polymeric phase was enriched with α-la and the saline phase with β-lg. The experiments were conducted using a glass column packed with the Sephadex G-25® gel. Both proteins were quantified by reverse phase liquid chromatography. The experimental data were fitted by non-linear regression, using the successive quadratic programming algorithm. The mass transfer model utilized represented adequately the SEC experimental results.  相似文献
