Baculoviral efficacy against lepidopteran larvae is substantially impacted by the host plant. Here, we characterized how baculoviral pathogenicity to cotton-fed Heliothis virescens larvae is affected by induction of systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Numerous studies have shown that SAR induced by the plant elicitor benzo-(1,2,3)-thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid S-methyl ester (BTH) can protect against plant pathogens, but reports on the impacts of SAR on chewing herbivores or on natural enemies of herbivores are few. We found that BTH application significantly increased foliar peroxidase activity, condensed tannin levels, and total phenolic levels but did not alter dihydroxyphenolic levels. Consumption of BTH-treated foliage did not influence H. virescens pupal weight or larval mortality by the microbial control agent Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus any more than did consumption of untreated foliage. Thus, activation of SAR, although it did not protect the plant against a chewing herbivore, also did not reduce the effect of a natural enemy on a herbivore, indicating that SAR and microbial control agents may be compatible components of integrated pest management.  相似文献

The advanced TALSPEAK process is a selective solvent extraction that utilizes 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (HEH[EHP]) to separate lanthanide elements from trivalent actinides, which are held back in the aqueous phase by N-hydroxylethyl-N,N’,N’-ethylenediamine triacetic acid (HEDTA) buffered by citric acid. Gamma irradiation of an experiment containing Eu(III) and Am(III) as representative lanthanide and actinide elements resulted in higher distribution ratios of both and separation factors which decreased in an exponential fashion with increasing dose. Analysis of the reagents showed that the HEDTA concentration also decreased in an exponential fashion, strongly suggesting that degradation was correlated with loss of separation selectivity. In contrast, the concentration of citrate was unaffected, and while the concentration of HEH[EHP] did decrease, its dose-dependent kinetic profile indicated that it was not limiting partitioning. A second set of experiments were conducted using a citrate concentration that was 7.5 X higher, with the expectation that citrate would protect the HEDTA by scavenging radiolytically formed OH radicals. HEDTA degradation was significantly mitigated at higher gamma doses, but the Eu-Am separation was worse than in the low citrate experiments, presumably because at the high citrate concentrations, the Eu-citrate complexes formed in abundances competitive with the Am complexes, and are more effectively held back in the aqueous phase.  相似文献

In this study the adsorption of poloxamer block copolymer surfactants to polystyrene latex has been studied at a range of temperatures. It has been noted previously that the adsorption first falls, then rises and falls again as the temperature is increased, due to the existence of a phase transition in aqueous solutions of these surfactants at specific temperatures, which may be a critical micelle temperature. The present study shows that the hydrophobicity of the surface changes in a manner related to the amount of poloxamer adsorbed (i.e. is greatly influenced by the temperature of adsorption in relation to the transition temperature). The coating layer thickness, however, is essentially unchanged by the temperature of adsorption (i.e. not related to the amount adsorbed), but is influenced by the temperature at which the sizing was undertaken. This is due to dehydration of the poly (oxyethylene) with increasing temperature. The data presented here provide a possible explanation for the changes in biological distribution of poloxamer coated particles which occur when they are injected into animals.  相似文献

To analyze the inhibited densification during sintering and differential shrinkage during cooling of Al2O3/ZrO2symmetric and asymmetric laminates, viscoelastic formulations, in which the viscosity and elastic modulus vary with time, have been developed. The viscoelastic mismatch stresses have been numerically computed over the entire processing cycle, including the heating period, the isothermal period, and the cooling period. The viscosity and free sintering rates that are needed for stress computation have been obtained by modifying the parameters that are measured for a normal isotropic densifying compact using cyclic loading dilatometry. The modification is based on the available sintering models to account for the effect of strain history on compact viscosity and sintering rates. The stress calculation shows that, with the exception of the initial heating period, the viscoelastic stress is identical to the viscous stress that is calculated solely from the strain rate mismatch. Sintering damage in the laminates is shown to occur during densification under conditions where the differential sintering stress is smaller than the intrinsic sintering pressure. The magnitude of residual stress in hybrid laminates on cooling is dependent on the cooling rate, and slower cooling rates are capable of almost completely relaxing the expansion mismatch stress at temperatures of >1200°C.  相似文献

The computer graphic simulation of a common spray painting artifact, called orange peel, is discussed. Orange peel distorts surface reflections and is commonplace in product design applications. The orange peel measurements from a standard industrial instrument are used to construct a height field, and this surface is rendered using traditional normal mapping techniques. Comparisons are made between real panels with orange peel and simulations of those panels. A simple visual model for detecting the presence of orange peel is also presented and evaluated. User testing of the model confirms that orange peel is more visible on dark paint colors than on light paint colors. The latter outcome suggests that to minimize application time, but still keep orange peel below visual threshold, paint application systems should be designed to take paint color into account.  相似文献

The epitaxial crystallization behavior of olefin block copolymers (OBCs) on uniaxially oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) films has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The crystallizable blocks of the OBCs under investigation were epitaxially nucleated by both iPP and HDPE substrates and epitaxial growth of OBC lamellae was observed. Epitaxial crystallization of the OBCs has been found for slow and fast cooling conditions from the melt which pointed to the strong interaction between the polyolefin substrates and the OBCs. However, the epitaxial morphology of the OBCs strongly depends on their octene concentration difference (ΔC8) between crystallizable and non-crystallizable blocks, which probably is related to the OBC segregation strength in the melt. With high ΔC8 the development of epitaxial crystallization of the OBC was restricted within isolated crystalline domains surrounded by the amorphous phase. In contrast, with low ΔC8 the oriented lamellae of the OBC were distributed homogeneously on iPP but formed separated crystalline domains on HDPE, which has a stronger nucleation capability than iPP on the crystalline OBC blocks because of its similar molecular architecture. Our study points to epitaxy as another reason for the strong interaction between OBC and polyolefins which causes the advanced compatibilization behavior of OBCs when compared with conventional random copolymers.  相似文献

We fabricate freely suspended nanosheets of molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) which are characterized by quantitative optical microscopy and high-resolution friction force microscopy. We study the elastic deformation of freely suspended nanosheets of MoS2 using an atomic force microscope. The Young''s modulus and the initial pre-tension of the nanosheets are determined by performing a nanoscopic version of a bending test experiment. MoS2 sheets show high elasticity and an extremely high Young''s modulus (0.30 TPa, 50% larger than steel). We investigate the flow of a granular material over a vibrated horizontal screen. We perform a direct quantitative comparison, across a range of operating conditions, between laboratory scale experiments and simulations using the discrete element method (DEM). We test the extent to which the commonly employed DEM approximation of particles being spherical affects the ability of the model to realistically reproduce the behaviour of industrial screening systems where the particles are generally non-spherical in shape.The simulation geometry and input particle size distribution are set up to exactly match the experimental system, which consists of a horizontal screen with a wire mesh cloth onto which quarry rock is fed at a series of input flow rates. The screen is vibrated, causing the granular bed to flow over the deck and vertically stratify with finer material passing through the screen, where it is collected in a series of bins located along the length of the screen. The size distribution of the material flowing through each section of the screen is found by analyzing the contents of each collection bin.The best agreement is found for very low flow rates, where the vast majority of the below aperture size material is rapidly captured just after it enters the screen in both the simulation and experiment. At higher flow rates, significant quantitative errors are found with the over-prediction of the flow rate through the screen for near grate sized particles. This is attributed to the higher rate of percolation through the bed and the easier capture by the screen surface of the spherical shaped material. The near aperture sized spherical particles also show a very strong tendency to peg the screen, becoming trapped in the screen openings and limiting further flow through those parts the screen. The use of spherical particles in the DEM simulation of vibrating screens is therefore found to be inadequate for modelling realistic flow and separation of particles that are not actually spherical.  相似文献

Chemical ligation is an important tool for the generation of synthetic DNA structures, which are used for a wide range of applications. Surprisingly, reported chemical ligation yields can range from 30 to 95 % for the same chemical activating agent and comparable DNA structures. We report a systematic study of DNA ligation by using a well-defined bimolecular test system and a water-soluble carbodiimide (EDC) as a phosphate-activating agent. Our results emphasize the interplay between template-substrate complex stability and the rates of the chemical steps of ligation, with 3′ phosphate substrates providing yields near 100 % after 24 hours for particularly favorable reaction conditions. Ligation rates are also shown to be sensitive to the identity of the base pairs flanking a nick site, with as much as threefold variation. Finally, the observation that DNA substrates are modified by EDC at rates that can be comparable with ligation rates emphasizes the importance of considering side reactions when designing protocols to maximize ligation yields.  相似文献
