We assessed sleep patterns, psychomotor vigilance performance, work demands and mood of 77 crewmembers of USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) on the rotating 5-h on/10-h off (5/10) watchstanding schedule. Within the 3-day cycle of the 5/10, sleep occurred at distinctly different times each day. On two of these days, sailors typically received only brief, 4-h sleep episodes followed by periods of sustained wakefulness (approximately 22 and 20 h). Crewmembers received approximately seven hours of sleep daily, but reported excessive fatigue and dissatisfaction with their schedule. Crewmembers’ mood worsened significantly over the course of the underway phase. Psychomotor vigilance performance (reaction times, lapses) was significantly degraded compared to performance when working circadian-aligned schedules. Overall, standing watch on the 5/10 schedule, combined with other work duties, resulted in poor sleep hygiene. Crewmembers on the 5/10 experienced periodic bouts of sustained wakefulness and accrued a significant sleep debt due to extended workdays and circadian-misaligned sleep.

Practitioner summary: We assessed crewmembers’ sleep patterns, psychomotor vigilance performance and work demands when working a rotating 5-h on/10-h off (5/10) watchstanding schedule. The application of Pluronic F127 as injectable gel-forming solution is limited by poor mechanical properties. The purpose of this study was to develop low viscosity formulations at ambient temperature that undergo a transition to gel under physiological conditions. Mixtures of Pluronic F127 and poly(vinyl alcohol) with different compositions were prepared in aqueous solutions and their in-situ gelation was investigated by dynamic light scattering and rheology. The results obtained for different formulations showed synergistic effects of polymer mixtures in aqueous media and their properties can be tuned by varying polymer concentration, system composition or changing temperature.  相似文献

In the paper are presented and analyzed some specific problems of instability and of Marangoni convection in desulphurizing slags at 1873.15 K, due to the presence of sulphur, during liquid steel treatments. Starting from the quantity sulphide capacity, a limit of sulphur solubility in a homogeneous liquid slag is established. The thermodynamic effect of sulphur in the slag is evaluated using an enthalpy of interaction of sulphur containing the balance of the partial molar enthalpy of mixing for CaS and CaO. The sulphur effect in slag, on the enhancement of the mass transfer coefficient through the interface is evaluated based on the expression of the concentration coefficient of the surface tension related to the mole fraction, the solutal Marangoni number and of the sulphur mass transfer enhancement parameters. It is concluded that during desulphurization, self-sustained capillary effects are present in slags.  相似文献

In their model formulation, it is observed that the retailer's stock level reaches zero before the deterioration occurs. Consequently, the model resulted in traditional inventory model with price sensitive demand rate and no shortages. Hence, the main purpose of this note is to modify and present complete model formulation for Begum et al. (2012) Begum, R., Sahoo, R.R., and Sahu, S.K. (2012), ‘A Replenishment Policy for Items with Price-Dependent Demand, Time-Proportional Deterioration and no Shortages’, International Journal of Systems Science, 43, 903910.[Taylor &; Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]. Thermal behavior of some diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A/p-aminobenzoic acid systems with calcium carbonate as a filler were studied. The kinetics parameters of the curing reactions were estimated using the variable peak exotherm method of Kissinger and Ozawa. The most probable kinetic model and the kinetic parameters of the degradation process were also estimated. The energies of crosslinking reactions are situated in the range of 46–57 kJ mol?1 for the first exotherm and between 68 and 72 kJ mol?1 for the second exotherm. The cured resins have a good thermal stability and the activation energies of degradation reactions are situated in the range of 178–218 kJ mol?1.  相似文献

The preparation of a semi-synthetic hydrogel based on poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-diethylene glycol diacrylate) inserted onto a collagen porous membrane, it was previous presented. The synthesis of the hydrogels was performed through radical copolymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) with diethylene glycol diacrylate (DEGDA) also as crosslinking agent, using ammonium persulfate as initiator and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylene diamine activator, and it was achieved in the presence of the collagen matrix. In this paper the thus prepared hydrogels are characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Scanning Electron Microscopy and for their swelling capacities. A kinetic model was studied to investigate the swelling mechanism of the semi-interpenetrated polymeric network. The swelling behavior was found dependent on the hydrogel composition and to the external stimuli such as temperature and pH of environment. This manner of acting recommends these materials as smart materials with potential applications in tissue engineering and pharmaceutical field as for example bioproducts carrier matrices.  相似文献

Membrane emulsification has been widely used in the manufacture of uniform soft and hard spherical particles. It is used to create uniform emulsion droplets whose sizes can be closely controlled. A disperse liquid phase is pressurised to permeate into the pores of a membrane, forming droplets in a drop-by-drop manner in a continuous phase on the other side of the membrane. The droplets formed are detached by applying well controlled detachment forces, which are result from the cross-flow of the continuous phase over the membrane surface, or the rotation of the membrane in the continuous phase. These two technologies are called cross-flow and rotating membrane emulsification, respectively. This paper presents examples of uniform complex spheres, sized from sub-micrometers to a few hundred micrometers, prepared using a pilot scale cross-flow membrane emulsification rig and a bentchtop rotating reactor. Emulsion stabilisation strategies vary from using small molecular surfactants, nanoparticles to surfactant free interfacial polymerisation. The examples demonstrate the advantages and versatility in formulation and manufacture of precisely size- and structure-controlled products using membranes.  相似文献

This paper proposes a fault-tolerant switched capacitor (SC)–based boost multilevel inverter. The proposed inverter is able to convert a low-level dc voltage into a desired ac output voltage in single-stage power conversion. It can accomplish a high voltage gain by using multiple SC cells arrangement at reduced voltage stresses on the switching devices and passive circuit elements in the boost network. The principle of operation and steady-state analysis of the proposed topology are presented to formulate the mathematical relationship between input dc and output ac voltage. In addition to that, the proposed inverter can also provide reliable electrical power supply at prescribed ac output voltage in the event of open-circuit failure of power switches. The fault tolerability is realized by reconfiguring the pulse width modulation (PWM) control scheme, whereas the reduction in output voltage is compensated by the boosting characteristic of the inverter. The effectiveness of the proposed inverter has been compared with other impedance source multilevel inverters in terms of voltage gain, boosting capability, and voltage stresses. A laboratory prototype of the proposed inverter is developed for experimentation, and its operation is validated by simulation and experimental results.  相似文献

In this study, we report on the microstructure of SiO2‐coated Al‐doped ZnO nanoparticles densified by spark plasma sintering(SPS), using a multiscale approach. Our observations show that it is possible to successfully prepare dense pellets while keeping the nanostructure with well‐defined Si‐rich grain boundaries. Although a very limited partial solubility of Si in the ZnO matrix has been observed, Si is mostly concentrated at the grain boundaries. More surprisingly, we evidenced some areas with nanoscale inhomogeneity of the Al concentration, which can locally strongly exceed the average composition of the matrix. It could explain the apparent discrepancy observed in the literature between the simultaneous presence of ZnAl2O4 in Al‐doped ZnO, which should be the signature of the doping level exceeding the solubility limit, and the concentration of carriers that still depends on the nominal Al concentration in ZnO even in the presence of ZnAl2O4.  相似文献
