Many large lake ecosystems are experiencing increasing eutrophication and persistent cyanobacteria‐dominated algal blooms affecting their water quality and ecosystem productivity because of widespread non‐point and point nutrient sources. Accordingly, the present study utilized data of July 2003 and January–February 2004, as well as previous measurements of nutrients and physico‐chemical variables (electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, turbidity and chlorophyll‐a), to characterize the spatial and temporal trends, as a means of better understanding the factors influencing lake environmental conditions, as support tools for long‐term ecosystem management and for better understanding the long‐term trends and effects. Inshore gulf areas were found to represent zones of maximum nutrient concentrations, compared to the deep main lake zones, with significant inter‐parameter correlations. Phosphorus, silicon and chlorophyll‐a concentrations were significantly correlated. Water electrical conductivity was also significantly and positively correlated with soluble reactive silicon (SRSi), alkalinity hardness DO, while exhibiting a negative association with water transparency. Water turbidity and transparency, electrical conductivity, and SRSi concentrations clearly describe a gradient from the gulf into the main lake. For such a shallow gulf, these findings suggest primary productivity is influenced mainly by the availability of nutrients, light transparency and the extent of availability of resuspended nutrients. The increasing eutrophic state of Lake Victoria is a serious concern since it contributes to an increased potential of more frequent occurrences of cyanobacterial blooms, a potential public health risk to both humans and wildlife. Improved understanding of influences from previous fish species introductions and concomitant changes in indigenous fish species, increased lake basin population and anthropogenic activities, water hyacinth resurgences, sustainability of biodiversity, and current interests in cage farming, are among the major concerns and challenges facing the contemporary Lake Victoria. The trends regarding nutrients and physico‐chemical characteristics are intended to support better monitoring efforts and data to promote the lake's ecosystem services and the sustainable management of the lake ecosystem.  相似文献

Sub-wavelength resolution in air-coupled ultrasound images of spot welds   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Resistance spot welds joining steel sheets were examined using air-coupled ultrasound at 1 MHz. Transmission C-scan images were obtained using two axially aligned transducers, with each focused on its adjacent surface of the specimen. Because of the enormous impedance mismatch between air and steel, the transmitted signal was exceedingly weak, requiring several hours to collect an image. Although the air-coupled images resembled the weld shapes as determined by an independent technique, surface topography introduced considerable image distortion. The smearing of the images was substantially less than the 5.9-mm wavelength in steel, with the steepness of the transition between welded and unwelded areas indicating a transverse resolution about 1 mm. Similarities to near-field imaging are mentioned as a possible explanation for the observed sub-wavelength resolution.  相似文献

Isothermal oxidation of NiAl + Zr has been performed over the temperature range of 800–1200°C and studied by TGA, XRD, and SEM. A discontinuous decrease in growth rate of two orders of magnitude was observed at 1000° C due to the formation of -Al2O3 from -Al2O3. This transformation also resulted in a dramatic change in the surface morphology of the scales, as a whisker topography was changed into a weblike network of oxide ridges and radial transformation cracks. It is believed that the ridges are evidence for a shortcircuit outward aluminum diffusion growth mechanism that has been documented in a number of18O tracer studies.  相似文献

The performance of spreadsheet users was compared for two modes of input to the computer, keyboard and automated speech recognition (ASR). Subjects from both an expert group and a novice group were also classified by decision style. Dependent measures were task completion time, accuracy, keystroke count, correction count, and user confidence. Results for a speaker‐dependent, discrete‐word recognizer showed that, for both simple data input and more complex analytical spreadsheet tasks, neither the experts nor the novices performed more effectively using ASR. However, both groups expressed the desirability of having speech input as an option for desktop computing.  相似文献

We study single machine batch scheduling with release times. Our goal is to minimize the sum of weighted flow times (or completion times) and delivery costs. Since the problem is strongly $\mathcal{NP}$ -hard even with no delivery cost and identical weights for all jobs, an approximation algorithm is presented for the problem with identical weights. This uses the polynomial time solution we give for the preemptive version of the problem. We also present an evolutionary metaheuristic algorithm for the general case. Computational results show very small gaps between the results of the metaheuristic and the lower bound.  相似文献

Precision-oriented search results such as those typically returned by the major search engines are vulnerable to issues of polysemy. When the same term refers to different things, the dominant sense is preferred in the rankings of search results. In this paper, we propose a novel two-box technique in the context of Web search that utilizes contextual terms provided by users for query disambiguation, making it possible to prefer other senses without altering the original query. A prototype system, Bobo, has been implemented. In Bobo, contextual terms are used to capture domain knowledge from users, help estimate relevance of search results, and route them towards a user-intended domain. A vast advantage of Bobo is that a wide range of domain knowledge can be effectively utilized, where helpful contextual terms do not even need to co-occur with query terms on any page. We have extensively evaluated the performance of Bobo on benchmark datasets that demonstrates the utility and effectiveness of our approach.  相似文献

This work introduces decentralized query processing techniques based on MIDAS, a novel distributed multidimensional index. In particular, MIDAS implements a distributed k-d tree, where leaves correspond to peers, and internal nodes dictate message routing. MIDAS requires that peers maintain little network information, and features mechanisms that support fault tolerance and load balancing. The proposed algorithms process point and range queries over the multidimensional indexed space in only O(log n) hops in expectance, where n is the network size. For nearest neighbor queries, two processing alternatives are discussed. The first, termed eager processing, has low latency (expected value of O(log n) hops) but may involve a large number of peers. The second, termed iterative processing, has higher latency (expected value of O(log2 n) hops) but involves far fewer peers. A detailed experimental evaluation demonstrates that our query processing techniques outperform existing methods for settings involving real spatial data as well as in the case of high dimensional synthetic data.  相似文献

Conventionally drought severity is assessed based on drought indices. Recently the Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) was proposed to assess drought severity based on the precipitation to potential evapotranspiration ratio (P/PET). In this paper RDI is studied as a bivariate index under a set of assumptions and simplifications. The paper presents a simple computational procedure for estimating the P/PET ratio for selected reference periods varying from 3 to 12 months, for any return period of drought. Alternatively, based on this procedure, the severity of any drought episode is rationally assessed. A bivariate probability analysis is employed based on the assumption that P and PET values are normally distributed and often negatively correlated. Examples for the application of the proposed procedure are presented using data from several meteorological stations in Greece. It is shown that the assumption of normality of both P and PET holds for long periods at all examined stations.  相似文献

In this article, a switching networked attitude controller for an unmanned quadrotor over a wireless sensor network is presented. To deal with the network induced time varying delays, the quadrotor is being modeled as a switching time varying linear system, while the applied switching output feedback control scheme, is calculated based on Linear Matrix Inequalities, and is able to guarantee the stability of the quadrotor under arbitrary changes in the time delays.  相似文献
