Electro-organic synthesis without supporting electrolyte: Possibilities of solid polymer electrolyte technology

The application of ion exchange membranes as solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) in fuel cells is state-of-the-art. This technology needs no supporting electrolyte; consequently it can be applied for electro-organic syntheses in order to save process steps. In this case the process is not predetermined to a maximized energy efficiency so that the selection of the cell design, of the electrode materials and of the operating conditions can be focused on a high selectivity of the electrode reactions. The electro-osmotic stream, which is caused by the solvation shells of the ions during their migration through the membrane, and hence is a typical property of SPE technology, has a significant effect on the electrode reactions. It generates enhanced mass transfer at the electrodes, which is beneficial for reaction selectivity. It can be influenced by the choice of, and possibly by the preparation of, the membrane. An additional remarkable advantage of SPE technology is the exceptional long durability of oxide coated electrodes. By combination of several process engineering methods stable operation of SPE cells has been realized, even for examples of non-aqueous reaction systems. Experiments up to 6000 h duration and in cells of up to 250 cm² membrane area show the potential for industrial application.     

Cadaver lungs for transplantation. Effect of ventilation with alveolar gas

In an effort to increase the donor pool for lung transplantation (LTX), we have demonstrated the feasibility of LTX from circulation-arrested cadavers in a canine LTX model. We hypothesized that ventilation of the cadaver lung with alveolar gas (20% O2, 5% CO2, balance N2) (AG) would be superior to ventilation with 100% oxygen (O2) after circulatory arrest of the donor. Twelve mongrel dogs were intubated, heparinized and euthanized by pentothal injection and ventilated with AG (n=6) or O2 (n=6). Four hours later, donor animals underwent sternotomy, and the lungs were flushed with cold modified Euro-Collins solution, harvested, and stored inflated in ice slush. Left lung allotransplantation was performed, and recipients were made dependent o n the transplanted lung by occlusion of the contralateral bronchus and pulmonary artery. Recipient animals were ventilated with an FiO2 of 0.4 and followed for 8 hr. Total ischemic time was 7.9 hr for both groups. Pulmonary edema developed in all recipients of AG lungs; one recipient survived the 8-hr observation period with poor oxygenation. In contrast, three of six recipients of O2-ventilated lungs survived for 8-hr with excellent gas exchange. Specimens of donor lungs before and after transplant were evaluated histologically utilizing trypan blue exclusion as an indicator of cell viability. At the time of organ retrieval 4 hr after death, 6% of cells were nonviable in the O2-ventilated cadaver lungs. Circulation-arrested cadaver lungs ventilated with 100% O2 prior to organ retrieval have superior pulmonary function after transplant compared with lungs ventilated with AG. Ventilation of cadaver lungs with AG induces pulmonary injury in this model. retrieval of donor lungs from circulation-arrested cadavers has potential for increasing the pulmonary donor pool.     

Strengthening of concrete prisms using the plate-bonding technique

This paper presents the use of fracture mechanics for the plate bonding technique. Plates of steel or carbon-fibre reinforced plastic are bonded with an epoxy adhesive to rectangular concrete prisms and loaded in shear up to failure, what is normally known in fracture mechanics as mode II failure. In this special application a linear and a nonlinear approach are presented. The nonlinear equation derived for a realistic shear-deformation curve can only be used for numerical calculations. However, for simplified shear-deformation curves, the derived formula can be solved analytically. Results from tests, which are compared with the theory, are also presented.     

Electromigration-induced damage in bamboo Al interconnects

Depletion and hillock formation were examined in-situ in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) during electromigration of bamboo Al interconnect segments. Hillocks formed directly at the anode ends of the segments by epitaxial addition of Al at the bottom Al/TiN interface. Depletion occurred nonuniformly from the cathode end and stopped once the distance between the leading void and the hillock reached the critical length for electromigration at the given current density. A modified equation for the drift velocity is proposed, which includes the effect of nonuniform depletion and predicts that interconnects with nonuniform depletion are more reliable than those with uniform depletion.     

Van vleck paramagnetism of the diluted intermetallic compounds Pr1−x Y x Ni5 at fields up to 15 T

We have measured the 16 Hz susceptibility of the diluted Van Vleck paramagnets Pr_1−x Y _x Ni₅ withx=0.00, 0.05, 0.10. 0.20 at temperatures 1.5 K≤T≤50 K and magnetic fields up to 15T. Their Van Vleck type magnetic susceptibility χ(T, B, x) strongly depends on the field atB≥6 T. The temperatureT _max(B, x) of the maximum of χ(T, B, x) decreases at increasing the field from zero to 15 T by approximately one order of magnitude for all Pr_1−x Y _x Ni₅ compounds. Changing the dilutionx from zero to 0.20, the field whereT _max(B, x) strongly drops is increased from 9 T to 11 T. Our data agree qualitatively with the predictions of a point charge model which considers the Zeeman term in addition to the electronic exchange and the dominating crystal field contributions.     

Absence of detectable human herpesvirus 8 in the semen of human immunodeficiency virus-infected men without Kaposi's sarcoma

The prevalence of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8)/Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus was investigated in the semen of 99 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected men (median CD4 cell count, 357/mm3) by use of a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay capable of detecting <10 copies of HHV-8 DNA. Of the subjects, 95 (96%) self-identified as men who have sex with men (MSM), and 3 had a history of clinical KS. Seminal cell specimens were negative for HHV-8 in 98 subjects. None of the 26 without KS (27.1% of 96 tested) who were seropositive for HHV-8 by IFA for latency-associated nuclear antigens had HHV-8 detected in their semen. The only subject with any evidence for seminal HHV-8 DNA was seropositive for HHV-8 and had active KS. HHV-8 was detected in 10 (10.4%) of 96 peripheral blood mononuclear cell specimens. The prevalence of HHV-8 DNA by PCR in semen of HIV-infected MSM without KS is low.     

Head and eye movements in unrestrained pigeons (Columba livia).

Head and eye movements were simultaneously recorded during locomotory and pecking behavior of 4 pigeons, which were trained to traverse a conditioning chamber, with a pecking key and a food dispenser at each end. Each trial involved key pecking, walking, and feeding. Head movements were registered with a skull-mounted miniature accelerometer, and eye movements were recorded with implanted electrooculogram (EOG) electrodes. An almost perfect temporal coordination between head and eye movements was observed during both walking and feeding bouts. During walking, head movements primarily provide retinal image stability, and eye movements support visual scanning. During feeding, head movements mainly subserve the grasping of food items, and eye movements maintain visual fixation on them. Because the eyes are reflexively closed during the middle phase of pecks, the head and eye movements are then under ballistic control. Production of proteinase A by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a cell-recycling fermentation system: experiments and computer simulations

Overproduction of proteinase A by recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated by cultivations in a cell-recycling bioreactor. Membrane filtration was used to separate cells from the broth. Recycling ratios and dilution rates were varied and the effect on enzyme production was studied both experimentally and by computer simulations. Experiments and simulations showed that cell mass and product concentration were enhanced by high ratios of recycling. Additional simulations showed that the proteinase A concentration decreased drastically at high dilution rates and the optimal volumetric productivities were at high dilution rates just below washout and at high ratios of recycling. Cell-recycling fermentation gave much higher volumetric productivities and stable product concentrations in contrast to simple continuous fermentation.
