Analyzing the way computer technologies are used is crucial for their development. Such analyses make it possible to evaluate these technologies and enhance their evolution. The present article presents some ideas drawn from the development of a cooperation platform for elementary school children (10–11 years old). On the basis of an obvious ergonomic requirement, we worked on two other dimensions: cultural aspects and the teaching scenario. The goal was to set up observation situations and analyze the conversations produced during those situations, in order to understand what using the platform meant to both the pupils and their teachers.

In volume rendering, it is very difficult to simultaneously visualize interior and exterior structures while preserving clear shape cues. Highly transparent transfer functions produce cluttered images with many overlapping structures, while clipping techniques completely remove possibly important context information. In this paper, we present a new model for volume rendering, inspired by techniques from illustration. It provides a means of interactively inspecting the interior of a volumetric data set in a feature-driven way which retains context information. The context-preserving volume rendering model uses a function of shading intensity, gradient magnitude, distance to the eye point, and previously accumulated opacity to selectively reduce the opacity in less important data regions. It is controlled by two user-specified parameters. This new method represents an alternative to conventional clipping techniques, sharing their easy and intuitive user control, but does not suffer from the drawback of missing context information 相似文献

Exploded views are an illustration technique where an object is partitioned into several segments. These segments are displaced to reveal otherwise hidden detail. In this paper we apply the concept of exploded views to volumetric data in order to solve the general problem of occlusion. In many cases an object of interest is occluded by other structures. While transparency or cutaways can be used to reveal a focus object, these techniques remove parts of the context information. Exploded views, on the other hand, do not suffer from this drawback. Our approach employs a force-based model: the volume is divided into a part configuration controlled by a number of forces and constraints. The focus object exerts an explosion force causing the parts to arrange according to the given constraints. We show that this novel and flexible approach allows for a wide variety of explosion-based visualizations including view-dependent explosions. Furthermore, we present a high-quality GPU-based volume ray casting algorithm for exploded views which allows rendering and interaction at several frames per second. 相似文献

The biomechanics of slips are an important component in the prevention of fall-related injuries. The purpose of this paper is to review the available literature on the biomechanics of gait relevant to slips. This knowledge can be used to develop slip resistance testing methodologies and to determine critical differences in human behaviour between slips leading to recovery and those resulting in falls. Ground reaction forces at the shoe-floor interface have been extensively studied and are probably the most critical biomechanical factor in slips. The ratio of the shear to normal foot forces generated during gait, known as the required coefficient of friction (RCOF) during normal locomotion on dry surfaces or 'friction used/achievable' during slips, has been one biomechanical variable most closely associated with the measured frictional properties of the shoe/floor interface (usually the coefficient of friction or COF). Other biomechanical factors that also play an important role are the kinematics of the foot at heel contact and human responses to slipping perturbations, often evident in the moments generated at the lower extremity joints and postural adaptations. In addition, it must be realized that the biomechanics are dependent upon the capabilities of the postural control system, the mental set of the individual, and the perception of the environment, particularly, the danger of slipping. The focus of this paper is to review what is known regarding the kinematics and kinetics of walking on surfaces under a variety of environmental conditions. Finally, we discuss future biomechanical research needs to help to improve walkway-friction measurements and safety. 相似文献

A number of human-centred methodologies--subjective, objective, and combined--are used for slipperiness measurement. They comprise a variety of approaches from biomechanically-oriented experiments to psychophysical tests and subjective evaluations. The objective of this paper is to review some of the research done in the field, including such topics as awareness and perception of slipperiness, postural and balance control, rating scales for balance, adaptation to slippery conditions, measurement of unexpected movements, kinematics of slipping, and protective movements during falling. The role of human factors in slips and falls will be discussed. Strengths and weaknesses of human-centred approaches in relation to mechanical slip test methodologies are considered. Current friction-based criteria and thresholds for walking without slipping are reviewed for a number of work tasks. These include activities such as walking on a level or an inclined surface, running, stopping and jumping, as well as stair ascent and descent, manual exertion (pushing and pulling, load carrying, lifting) and particular concerns of the elderly and mobility disabled persons. Some future directions for slipperiness measurement and research in the field of slips and falls are outlined. Human-centred approaches for slipperiness measurement do have many applications. First, they are utilized to develop research hypotheses and models to predict workplace risks caused by slipping. Second, they are important alternatives to apparatus-based friction measurements and are used to validate such methodologies. The oxidation behaviour of the intermetallic phase Ti-50 at% Al at 900 °C was studied. It was found that the oxidation behaviour strongly depends on the composition and distribution of the and 2-phases in the alloy microstructure. As this microstructure strongly depends on the alloy cooling rate, the oxidation behaviour of TiAl-based intermetallics is significantly affected by the casting procedure and subsequent heat treatment. Generating feature spaces for linear algorithms with regularized sparse kernel slow feature analysis

Without non-linear basis functions many problems can not be solved by linear algorithms. This article proposes a method to automatically construct such basis functions with slow feature analysis (SFA). Non-linear optimization of this unsupervised learning method generates an orthogonal basis on the unknown latent space for a given time series. In contrast to methods like PCA, SFA is thus well suited for techniques that make direct use of the latent space. Real-world time series can be complex, and current SFA algorithms are either not powerful enough or tend to over-fit. We make use of the kernel trick in combination with sparsification to develop a kernelized SFA algorithm which provides a powerful function class for large data sets. Sparsity is achieved by a novel matching pursuit approach that can be applied to other tasks as well. For small data sets, however, the kernel SFA approach leads to over-fitting and numerical instabilities. To enforce a stable solution, we introduce regularization to the SFA objective. We hypothesize that our algorithm generates a feature space that resembles a Fourier basis in the unknown space of latent variables underlying a given real-world time series. We evaluate this hypothesis at the example of a vowel classification task in comparison to sparse kernel PCA. Our results show excellent classification accuracy and demonstrate the superiority of kernel SFA over kernel PCA in encoding latent variables. 相似文献

We will in this paper address the problem of offline path planning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Our goal is to find paths that meet mission objectives, are safe with respect to collision and grounding, fuel efficient and satisfy criteria for communication. Due to the many nonconvex constraints of the problem, Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) will be used in finding the path. Approximate communication constraints and terrain avoidance constraints are used in the MILP formulation. To achieve more accurate prediction of the ability to communicate, the path is then analyzed in the radio propagation toolbox SPLAT!, and if the UAVs are not able to communicate according to design criteria for bandwidth, constraints are modified in the optimization problem in an iterative manner. The MICAST research program focuses on a systematic analysis of the effect of convection on the microstructure evolution in cast Al-alloys. The experiments within MICAST are carried out under well defined thermally and magnetically controlled, convective boundary conditions and analyzed using advanced diagnostics and theoretical modeling, involving phase field simulation, micro-modeling and global simulation of heat and mass transport. The MICAST team uses as a model material the Al-Si base alloys. Intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) can exist as polarized cells and are capable of secreting interleukin-6 (IL-6), yet it has not been determined if this IL-6 is secreted in a polarized fashion. Using the non-transformed rat IEC-6 intestinal epithelial cell line grown on microporous membrane inserts, we have determined that these cells were capable of secreting IL-6 preferentially to the basal surface when stimulated basally with IL-1 beta. In contrast, stimulation of the cells with TNF-alpha resulted in an equal level of IL-6 secretion to the apical and basal surfaces, regardless of whether the cells were stimulated by the apical or basal route. Experiments designed to test the permeability of the IEC-6 cell layer to apically added sodium fluorescein confirmed that neither IL-1 beta nor TNF-alpha altered the integrity of the cell layer after three days. These results suggest that IEC may have the capacity to secret IL-6 in different patterns depending upon the stimulation received. This would allow communication between the IEC and lamina propria cells via basal secretion and rapid communication between IEC via apical secretion. 相似文献
