Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) dispersed in N‐methylpyrrolidone (NMP) were functionalized by addition of polystyryl radicals from 2,2,6,6‐tetramethyl‐1‐piperidinyloxy‐ended polystyrene (SWCNT‐g‐PS). The amount of polystyrene grafted to the nanotubes was in the range 20‐25 wt% irrespective of polystyrene number‐average molecular weight ranging from 2270 to 49 500 g mol?1. In Raman spectra the ratios of D‐band to G‐band intensity were similar for all of the polystyrene‐grafted samples and for the starting SWCNTs. Numerous near‐infrared electronic transitions of the SWCNTs were retained after polymer grafting. Transmission electron microscopy images showed bundles of SWCNT‐g‐PS of various diameters with some of the polystyrene clumped on the bundle surfaces. Composites of SWCNT‐g‐PS in a commercial‐grade polystyrene were prepared by precipitation of mixtures of the components from NMP into water, i.e. the coagulation method of preparation. Electrical conductivities of the composites were about 10?15 S cm?1 and showed no percolation threshold with increasing SWCNT content. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composites increased at low filler loadings and remained constant with further nanotube addition irrespective of the length and number of grafted polystyrene chains. The change of heat capacity (ΔCp) at Tg decreased with increasing amount of SWCNT‐g‐PS of 2850 g mol?1, but ΔCp changed very little with the amount of SWCNT‐g‐PS of higher molecular weight. The expected monotonic decrease in ΔCp coupled with the plateau behavior of Tg suggests there is a limit to the amount that Tg of the matrix polymer can increase with increasing amount of nanotube filler. Oleic acid-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4) encapsulated within poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) particles were prepared by the w/o/w emulsion technique using poly(vinyl alcohol) as a dispersant. The concentration of PLGA in the oil phase was varied (5, 15, 30, 45, and 60?mg/ml) at constant magnetite concentration in the oil phase (5?mg/ml) to study the properties of composite Fe3O4–PLGA nanoparticles. Even though PLGA concentration varied widely in the oil phase, the weight percent of 7–16?nm diameter magnetite in the particles varied only from 56 to 62?% (23–28?vol.%). The obtained composite nanoparticles were essentially spherical with magnetite spatially uniformly dispersed in individual PLGA particles, as measured by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Also, the magnetite concentration in each particle did not vary widely as determined qualitatively via microscopy. Hydrodynamic diameters of the composite nanoparticles as measured by dynamic light scattering increased by approximately 10?% with added magnetite, with a smaller relative increase in diameter measured by TEM. The zeta potential of the particles was about ?26?mV, independent of Fe3O4 loading. Relatively high saturation magnetizations (36–45?emu/g) were measured for these highly loaded particles, with the latter value only 7?emu/g lower than the value measured for the oleic acid-coated particles alone.  相似文献

The effect of methyl acrylate content in ethylene–methyl acrylate–acrylic acid (E–MA–AA) terpolymers and acrylic acid content in ethylene–acrylic acid (E–AA) copolymers was investigated in blends of these two materials. The E–MA–AA terpolymer with 8 mol % methyl acrylate was not miscible with any E–AA material no matter what the AA content, whereas the terpolymer with only about 2 mol % methyl acrylate was miscible, at least to some extent, with the E–AA copolymer at high acrylic acid contents. Evidence supporting this conclusion derived from gloss, differential scanning calorimetry testing, and dynamic mechanical measurements. For the E–AA polymer material with the highest acid content, there was a synergistic effect for some properties at low added amounts of E–MA–AA copolymer; the tensile strength and hardness were 10% higher than values for the E–AA copolymer, even though the E–AA copolymer was much stiffer. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with aspect ratios (ARs) ranging from 94 to 474 were incorporated into polystyrene (PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) blends using solution mixing and melt mixing. Also, two functionalized MWCNTs were prepared from the nanotubes having AR 94: one was oxidized by nitric acid while the other was further modified with amine‐terminated PS attached to carboxyl groups to form amides. The two functionalized MWCNTs (1 wt %) were used to show that which phase the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were located in could be controlled with nanotube surface chemistry. When nanotubes were confined to the minor phase, the size of the minor domain first decreased with adding low AR CNT as expected due to the increased viscosity of the minor phase. However, at higher ARs, the size increased beyond the size for the minor domain with no nanotubes, and at high enough AR, the shape of the minor domain changed from spherical to an elongated irregular shape. © 2015 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 61: 3500–3510, 2015  相似文献

A real-time PCR assay was designed to detect a 162-bp fragment of the ssrA gene in Listeria monocytogenes. The specificity of the assay for L. monocytogenes was confirmed against a panel of 6 Listeria species and 26 other bacterial species. A detection limit of 1-10 genome equivalents was determined for the assay. Application of the assay in natural and artificially contaminated culture enriched foods, including soft cheese, meat, milk, vegetables and fish, enabled detection of 1-5 CFU L. monocytogenes per 25g/ml of food sample in 30h. The performance of the assay was compared with the Roche Diagnostics 'LightCycler foodproof Listeria monocytogenes Detection Kit'. Both methods detected L. monocytogenes in all artificially contaminated retail samples (n=27) and L. monocytogenes was not detected by either system in 27 natural retail food samples. The method developed in this study has the potential to enable the specific detection of L. monocytogenes in a variety of food types in a time-frame considerably faster than current standard methods. The potential of the ssrA gene as a nucleic acid diagnostic (NAD) target has been demonstrated in L. monocytogenes. We are currently developing NAD tests based on the ssrA gene for a range of common foodborne and clinically relevant bacterial pathogens.  相似文献

This paper reviews the literature relevant to the dynamics of microbial growth on soluble substrates and integrates the knowledge obtained into a unifying theory describing that growth. In the unifying theory cellular mass is divided into five constituents: a synthetic component, a structural component, precursor molecules for those components, enzymes catalyzing the synthesis of the precursors, and storage products. Reactions governing the levels of those constituents are hypothesized. The literature shows that the transient response of a culture is generally either a storage response or a growth response and that environmental factors govern which response is manifested. The unifying theory is developed in a way which allows it to be simplified to either of those responses by proper selection of the rate constants in the reactions governing the levels of the cellular constituents.  相似文献

Interest in Citizen Science has grown significantly over the last decade. Much of this interest can be traced to the provision of sophisticated platforms that enable seamless collaboration, cooperation and coordination between professional and amateur scientists. In terms of field research, smart-phones have been widely adopted, automating data collection and enriching observations with photographs, sound recordings and GPS coordinates using embedded sensors hosted on the device itself. Interaction with external sensor platforms such as those normally used in the environmental monitoring domain is practically null-existent. Remedying this deficiency would have positive ramifications for both the professional and citizen science communities. To illustrate the relevant issues, this paper considers a common problem, that of data collection in sparse sensor networks, and proposes a practical solution that would enable citizen scientists act as Human Relays thus facilitating the collection of data from such networks. Broader issues necessary for enabling intelligent sensing using common smart-phones and embedded sensing technologies are then discussed.  相似文献
