This research examines longitudinally associations between family risk factors and child and parent depression in 302 urban, low-income, African American adolescents (ages 9-15) and their parents across 2 waves of data collection. Diagnostic data revealed that 7.3% of parents and 3.0% of children at Time 1 and 5.4% of parents and 2.8% of children at Time 2 were clinically depressed. Regression analyses revealed that changes in family functioning were concurrently associated with changes in depression for both children and parents. Specifically, increases in conflict and decreases in parental monitoring were associated with increases in child depressive symptomatology, and increases in conflict and decreases in positive parenting were associated with increases in parental depressive symptomatology. Endothelial cell injury resulting in vascular leak syndrome (VLS) is one of the most widely noted phenomenons in a variety of clinical diseases. In the current study we used IL-2-induced VLS as a model to investigate the role of cytolytic lymphocytes in the cytotoxicity of endothelial cells. Administration of IL-2 (75,000 U/mouse, three times a day for 3 days) into BL/6 wild-type mice triggered significant VLS in the lungs, liver, and spleen. Interestingly, perforin-knockout (KO) mice exhibited a marked decrease in IL-2-induced VLS in all three organs tested. Also, Fas ligand-defective (gld) mice and Fas-deficient (lpr) mice exhibited decreased VLS in the liver and spleen, but not in the lungs. The decreased VLS seen in perforin-KO, gld, and lpr mice was not due to any defect in lymphocyte migration or homing to various organs because histopathologic studies in these mice demonstrated significant and often greater perivascular infiltration of lymphocytes compared with the IL-2-treated wild-type mice. Ultrastructural studies of the lungs demonstrated significant damage to the endothelial cells in IL-2-treated wild-type mice and decreased damage in perforin-KO mice. IL-2 administration caused up-regulation of CD44 in all strains of mice tested and triggered increased LAK activity against an endothelial cell line in wild-type and gld mice, but not in perforin-KO mice. The current study demonstrates for the first time that perforin and Fas ligand may actively participate in endothelial cell injury and induction of VLS in a variety of organs. 相似文献

A total of 641 randomly selected Australian veterans of the Vietnam War were interviewed about their use of health care in the previous two weeks to determine what factors contributed to health care consumption. Seventy-three variables were examined by univariate linear regression and then grouped into seven categories relating to age, physical and mental health, predisposition to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), deployment and repatriation experiences, and membership in veterans groups. PTSD was associated with an additional cost of $79 in health care for the two-week period. Each physical diagnosis was associated with an additional $28. Alcohol consumption was not related to health care costs. Other important variables contributing to costs were depression, educational status, the quality of the repatriation experience, and social support. 相似文献

Assessed the differential predictive utility of home-leaving status, family functioning, separation–individuation issues, cognitive constructions of the home-leaving process, and personality variables for adjustment during the 1st yr of college with a sample of 286 college freshmen (182 women and 104 men). Findings revealed that the separation–individuation, family relations, and personality variables were better predictors of adjustment than were the cognitive indicators or home-leaving status. Results also varied as a function of gender; less well-adjusted men were more disconnected from significant others, whereas less well-adjusted women exhibited higher levels of separation anxiety and enmeshment seeking. We describe a patient with Chlamydia pneumoniae infection who presented with cerebellar dysfunction, followed by respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. C. pneumoniae is an important respiratory pathogen, and other clinical manifestations, including neurological syndromes, are being increasingly recognized. Meningoencephalitis and other neurological complications have also been described in patients with infections due to Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia trachomatis. Objective: Based on social ecological theory, this study examined the joint relations among adolescents' family, peer, and school contexts and depressive symptoms in youth with spina bifida using cumulative, protective, and specific effects models. Method: Sixty families of adolescents with spina bifida and 65 comparison families reported on adolescents' positive experiences within these contexts and on depressive symptoms when youth were 14–15 and 16–17 years old. Results: Adolescents with spina bifida had fewer total positive contexts and less positive experience within peer and school contexts, as compared to typically developing adolescents. Greater total number of positive contexts and higher levels of positive experiences within family and school contexts were associated with fewer depressive symptoms for both groups; peer positive experiences were related to lower depressive symptoms for typically developing adolescents only. Conclusion: Adolescents with spina bifida have fewer positive contexts, which may place them at risk for higher levels of depressive symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To better understand nursing activities and working conditions. BACKGROUND: Nursing practice involves astute clinical decision making and the competent delivery of nursing care procedures. To complete nursing procedures, nurses must simultaneously organize and reorganize priorities and manage changing clinical information for multiple patients. Few researchers have examined the specific nature of nurses' activities and the effect of the environment on their work. METHODS: Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect data on 7 nurses engaged in nursing activities. Examples of methods include link analysis, subject matter expert, task analysis, cognitive pathway, and "stacking." Data collection focused on how nurses managed priorities, changing clinical information, and interruptions. RESULTS: The "cognitive pathway" graphically depicts the nature of nurses' work. Specifically, it reveals the shifting of the nurse's attention from patient to patient and the occurrence of interruptions. "Stacking" shows the number of tasks a nurse must balance at any one time. On average, nurses had 10 or more activities waiting to be performed and experienced 3.4 interruptions/hr. CONCLUSION: These methods provide unique insight into the dynamic nature of patient care and nursing work. APPLICATION: Extension of the methods demonstrated here may be useful in guiding efforts to change the work of nursing to better provide quality care and less stressful work environments. 相似文献

Two-photon polymerization (TPP) is widely used to create 3D micro- and nanoscale scaffolds for biological and mechanobiological studies, which often require the mechanical characterization of the TPP fabricated structures. To satisfy physiological requirements, most of the mechanical characterizations need to be conducted in liquid. However, previous characterizations of TPP fabricated structures are all conducted in air due to the limitation of conventional micro- and nanoscale mechanical testing methods. In this study, a new experimental method is reported for testing the mechanical properties of TPP-printed microfibers in liquid. The experiments show that the mechanical behaviors of the microfibers tested in liquid are significantly different from those tested in air. By controlling the TPP writing parameters, the mechanical properties of the microfibers can be tailored over a wide range to meet a variety of mechanobiology applications. In addition, it is found that, in water, the plasticly deformed microfibers can return to their predeformed shape after tensile strain is released. The shape recovery time is dependent on the size of microfibers. The experimental method represents a significant advancement in mechanical testing of TPP fabricated structures and may help release the full potential of TPP fabricated 3D tissue scaffolds for mechanobiological studies. 相似文献

Mercury cadmium telluride (HgCdTe, or MCT) with low n-type indium doping concentration offers a means for obtaining high performance infrared detectors. Characterizing carrier transport in materials with ultra low doping (ND?=?1014 cm?3 and lower), and multi-layer material structures designed for infrared detector devices, is particularly challenging using traditional methods. In this work, Hall effect measurements with a swept B-field were used in conjunction with a multi-carrier fitting procedure and Fourier-domain mobility spectrum analysis to analyze multi-layered MCT samples. Low temperature measurements (77 K) were able to identify multiple carrier species, including an epitaxial layer (x?=?0.2195) with n-type carrier concentration of n?=?1?×?1014 cm?3 and electron mobility of μ?=?280000 cm2/Vs. The extracted electron mobility matches or exceeds prior empirical models for MCT, illustrating the outstanding material quality achievable using current epitaxial growth methods, and motivating further study to revisit previously published material parameters for MCT carrier transport. The high material quality is further demonstrated via observation of the quantum Hall effect at low temperature (5 K and below). 相似文献
