4*4 directional coupler switch matrix with an InGaAlAs/InAlAs multiquantum well structure

A 4*4 directional coupler switch matrix is developed which uses, for the first time, the quantum confined Stark effect of InGaAlAs/InAlAs multiquantum well structures. The rearrangeable nonblocking 4*4 network with six 2*2 switches is shown to be perfectly functional with switching voltages between 5 and 6 V and crosstalk below -17 dB in all the operation states.<>     

Reduction of noise figure in semiconductor laser amplifiers with Ga1-xInxAs/GaInAsP/InP strained quantum wellstructures

The noise characteristics of semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs) in the Ga_1-xIn_xAs/GaInAsP/InP strained quantum well (QW) system are theoretically calculated and analyzed using density-matrix theory and taking into account the effects of band mixing on both the valence subbands and the transition dipole moments. The numerical results show that a reduced noise figure can be obtained in both tensile and compressively strained QW structures due to the increase in differential gain and the decrease in transparent carrier density. From a comparison among compressively strained (x=0.70), unstrained (x=0.53), and tensile strained (x=0.40) QW SLAs at a fixed carrier density and optical confinement factor, it is found that the noise figure of the tensile strained QW reaches its lowest value of 3.4 dB at average input optical power of -20 dB     

Dietary α-Tocopheryl Acetate Enhances Beef Quality in Holstein and Beef Breed Steers

The effect of long-term feeding (252 days) of three supplemental levels of α-tocopheryl acetate (actual 0, 360 and 1290 IU/head/day) on meat quality was evaluated in Holstein and beef breed steers. Tissue vitamin E concentrations were increased by each increment of supplementation. The color display life of fresh beef under simulated retail conditions was extended 2 to 5 days by vitamin E and lipid oxidation was markedly reduced. Microbial population was not affected by level of supplementation. No deterioration in sensory quality occurred for steaks from supplemented steers that were displayed until the time steaks from unsupplemented steers discolored.     

Correlation between serum levels of alanine aminotransferase and ferritin in male blood donors with antibody to hepatitis C virus

Chronic hepatitis C has been demonstrated to be associated with hepatic iron overload, and the hypothesis that the disease activity of hepatitis C is associated with iron cytotoxicity was tested in male volunteer blood donors. Sera with either antibody to hepatitis C virus or hepatitis B surface antigen were selected for determination of ferritin concentration and alanine aminotransferase activity. A correlation between serum ferritin concentration (Y; microgram/l) and alanine aminotransferase activity (X; IU/l) was found in donors with antibody to hepatitis C (log Y = 0.65 x log X + 0.98, r = 0.53, and P < 0.01). The correlation was lower in donors with hepatitis B surface antigen (r = 0.37; P < 0.01). Hepatitis C virus infection probably induces time-dependent iron accumulation associated with the progression of disease activity, while hepatitis B virus infection results in a variety of iron loads with different clinical features. The high disease activity related to hyperferritinemia suggests the presence of iron-induced liver damage in donors with hepatitis C.     

Cervical lymph nodes metastases from a pituitary carcinoma

Ipratropium bromide is a synthetic derivative of atropine with little absorption when used in inhalation, and therefore little secondary effects. The authors review its pharmacological properties and therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of asthma in children. Combined nebulized inhalation of ipratropium bromide and beta 2 sympathomimetic results in a more efficient and more sustained bronchodilatation than beta 2 sympathicomimetic alone in the treatment of acute asthma in children. Ipratropium bromide should be usefully introduced in the therapeutic scheme of acute asthma in children. Further studies will be necessary in order to determine its efficacy and tolerance in infants.     

Chronic ocular ischemia associated with the Eisenmenger's syndrome

We studied the ocular findings of two adult patients with the Eisenmenger's syndrome who had atrial septal defects that were diagnosed before the age of 10 years but not operated on and pulmonary hypertension. Both eyes of these patients showed microaneurysms, multiple small blot hemorrhages, or capillary dilation in the temporal peripheral fundus. Multiple microaneurysms and retinal collaterals were confirmed by fluorescein angiography. One of the patients developed bilateral rubeosis iridis with slow progression. These retinal lesions and the rubeosis iridis are probably related to chronic ocular ischemia caused by chronic systemic hypoxia.     

Optoelectronic buses for high-performance computing

Modern computer buses are typically organized by the three functions of data transfer, addressing, and arbitration/control. In this paper we present a fiber-based bus design which provides optical solutions for each of these functions. The design includes an all-optical addressing system, based on coincident pulse addressing, which eliminates the latency contribution and bandwidth limitation associated with electronic address decoding. The control system uses time-of-flight relationships between a priority chain and a feedback waveguide to implement fully distributed asynchronous and self-timed bus arbitration     

Tuning-current splitting network for three-section DBR lasers

A simple current-splitting network for DBR-laser frequency tuning is proposed that distributes a single control current among two tuning sections and can adjust the current distribution without yielding impedance mismatching. The nonlinear characteristics of the tuning sections realise the non-proportional current splitting suitable for continuous tuning; 470 GHz (3.8 nm) tuning range is achieved     

10 Gbit/s optical soliton transmission over 7200 km by using amonolithically integrated MQW-DFB-LD/MQW-EA modulator light source

The authors demonstrate 10 Gbit/s optical soliton transmission in a recirculating loop through the use of a monolithically integrated MQW-DFB-LD/MQW-EA modulator light source. The timing jitter due to the Gordon-Haus effect is successfully reduced by the optical bandpass filters conventionally used in the cascaded EDFAs to avoid the accumulation of amplified spontaneous emission. The transmission distance of 7200 km is achieved at a bit error rate of 10^-9     

a-Si alloy three-stacked solar cells with high stabilized-efficiency

a-Si alloy three-stacked solar cells have been studied to improve the stabilized efficiency of a-Si: H based solar cells. Based on the analysis by the individual characterization method of the component cells in stacked type cells, the a-Si :H middle cell was replaced with an a-SiGe :H cell. Furthermore, the optical confinement technology was improved to obtain a high-output current with thin i-layer thickness in the a-SiGe :H bottom cell. By this device design, the initial conversion efficiency was improved up to 12.4% and more than a 10% stabilized efficiency was obtained in a-SiC :H/a-SiGe :H/a-SiGe :H three-stacked cells. These cell characteristics were confirmed by measurements at the JQA Organization (the former JMI Institute).
