Nature shows many examples of surfaces with extraordinary wettability, which can often be associated with particular air-trapping surface patterns. Here, robust non-wetting surfaces have been created by femtosecond laser ablation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The laser-created surface structure resembles a forest of entangled fibers, which support structural superhydrophobicity even when the surface chemistry is changed by gold coating. SEM analysis showed that the degree of entanglement of hairs and the depth of the forest pattern correlates positively with accumulated laser fluence and can thus be influenced by altering various laser process parameters. The resulting fibrous surfaces exhibit a tremendous decrease in wettability compared to smooth PTFE surfaces; droplets impacting the virgin or gold coated PTFE forest do not wet the surface but bounce off. Exploratory bioadhesion experiments showed that the surfaces are truly air-trapping and do not support cell adhesion. Therewith, the created surfaces successfully mimic biological surfaces such as insect wings with robust anti-wetting behavior and potential for antiadhesive applications. In addition, the fabrication can be carried out in one process step, and our results clearly show the insensitivity of the resulting non-wetting behavior to variations in the process parameters, both of which make it a strong candidate for industrial applications.  相似文献

Layered and homogeneous gelatin gels with controlled rheological properties were compared for their sensory characteristics, specifically sweetness, hardness, breakdown behaviour and frothing. All gels and layers had a gelatin/water concentration of 5%. The total sugar concentration was 9% in the layered samples and 0, 9, 15 or 22.5% in the homogeneous samples. These concentrations corresponded to the concentrations in the single layers.A seven-layered sample with different sugar concentrations in the layers gave a higher early sweetness intensity than a homogeneous gel with the same mean total sugar concentration. All layered gels were similar in hardness, breakdown behaviour and frothing; for the homogenous samples, sensory hardness was decreased in samples with much sugar. These gels also fell into smaller pieces than the sugarless sample. This study shows that it is possible by controlling the sugar distribution within a sample to produce sweeter gels while the sugar content is maintained.  相似文献

The authors investigated whether intensive musical experience leads to enhancements in executive processing, as has been shown for bilingualism. Young adults who were bilinguals, musical performers (instrumentalists or vocalists), or neither completed 3 cognitive measures and 2 executive function tasks based on conflict. Both executive function tasks included control conditions that assessed performance in the absence of conflict. All participants performed equivalently for the cognitive measures and the control conditions of the executive function tasks, but performance diverged in the conflict conditions. In a version of the Simon task involving spatial conflict between a target cue and its position, bilinguals and musicians outperformed monolinguals, replicating earlier research with bilinguals. In a version of the Stroop task involving auditory and linguistic conflict between a word and its pitch, the musicians performed better than the other participants. Instrumentalists and vocalists did not differ on any measure. Results demonstrate that extended musical experience enhances executive control on a nonverbal spatial task, as previously shown for bilingualism, but also enhances control in a more specialized auditory task, although the effect of bilingualism did not extend to that domain. The passivation of copper anode in sulphuric acid industrial electrolyte at 65 °C was investigated by electrochemical noise (EN) technique using three imposed anodic currents 153, 180 and 210 mA cm−2 (galvanostatic or chronopotentiometric technique). The wavelet transforms and power spectral density (PSD) analyses have been employed to analyse the EN data. It has been found that during active dissolution the electrode surface is dominated by long time scale process and the change of the position of the maximum relative energy from D7 to D8 could be an indication of future passivation. This is associated in fast Fourier transform analyses by the disappearance of the low frequency plateau (white noise). During anodic dissolution the electrode surface was mainly undertaking general corrosion and the relative energy distribution was concentrated on large timescale crystals (D7-D8) with range of scale between 25.6 and 12.6 s. During passivation the electrode surface was dominated by short time scale process (D3), and during trans-passivation by medium (D4) followed by short time scale process (D2) with range of scale between 0.8 and 0.4 s, 1.6 and 0.8 s and 0.4 and 0.2 s, respectively. Crystals D2 and D3 could be related to metastable pitting and crystal D4 to localized corrosion.  相似文献

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) targeting either the 35S promoter or the Bt176 specific junction sequence were developed to screen for the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and specifically detect Bt176 maize in flours and starches. Two additional PCR-ELISA assays were developed to validate the results: one, based on the detection of the maize alcohol dehydrogenase 1 promoter specifically detected the presence of maize, and the other, based on the detection of a conserved sequence of plants ( 26S ribosomal RNA gene), validated the extracted DNA amplification. The PCR-ELISA assays developed here were highly specific and found to be as sensitive as the reference Southern hybridisation assay. The PCR-ELISA tests were at least 6 times more sensitive than gel electrophoresis and allowed 0.1% GMOs to be detected in Bt176, Bt11, Mon810 maize and Roundup Ready soybean. The PCR-ELISA tests are a method of choice for GMO screening and identifying Bt176 maize in flours and native starches. They may offer a cheaper alternative to the expensive real-time PCR assays and may be useful in laboratory GMO monitoring.  相似文献

Embedded devices using highly integrated chips must cope with conflicting constraints, while executing computationally demanding applications under limited energy storage. Automatic control and feedback loops appear to be an effective solution to simultaneously accommodate for performance uncertainties due to the tiny scale gates variability, varying and poorly predictable computing demands and limited energy storage constraints. This paper presents the example of an embedded video decoder controlled by several feedback loops to carry out the trade-off between decoding quality and energy consumption, exploiting the frequency and voltage scaling capabilities of the chip. The inner loop controls the dynamic voltage and frequency scaling through a fast predictive control strategy. The outer loop computes the scheduling set-points needed by the inner loop to process frames decoding. The feedback loops have been implemented on a stock PC and experimental results are provided.  相似文献

Using an in vivo manipulation, this study examined whether alcohol outcome expectancies (AOEs) vary across environmental settings. Two hundred twenty-one undergraduates were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 conditions in which environmental context (an on-campus bar vs. a laboratory) and instructed phase of intoxication ("just enough to begin to feel intoxicated" vs. "too much to drink") were manipulated. AOEs were assessed with a revised version of the Effects of Alcohol Scale (L. Southwick, C. Steele, A. Marlatt, & M. Lindell, 1981). Compared with participants tested in the laboratory, individuals exposed to the on-campus bar expected greater alcohol-related stimulation/perceived dominance and pleasurable disinhibition. Women expected more behavioral impairment during the latter stage of intoxication. These findings highlight the importance of ecologically valid research in this area, as well as cue-exposure assessment and treatment approaches. Juvenile court judges are often required to make distinctions as to whether certain adolescents should remain in the juvenile justice system or be transferred to adult courts. Typically, 3 broad factors weigh into juvenile court judges' decision making: (a) the level of danger the juvenile poses to the community, (b) the level of sophistication-maturity of the juvenile, and (c) the extent to which the juvenile is viewed as treatable. In an earlier study, knowledge of forensic and child psychologists was tapped to elucidate core characteristics related to the transfer process (R. T. Salekin et al, 2001). The current study augments that investigation. Judges provided (a) their perspective regarding the core criteria for dangerousness, sophistication-maturity, and amenability to treatment, and (b) data on the core characteristics of juveniles who were evaluated and subsequently judged to be appropriate for transfer to adult criminal courts. Policy implications for this increasingly critical interface between law and psychology are threefold: (a) Individualized assessments are key; (b) the adoption of a national standard for transfer to adult court is required; and (c) the development of treatment programs to improve the socialization of youth is necessary.
