AbstractProbiotics are defined as live microorganisms, which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host. Traditionally, probiotic food research has heavily focused on the genera Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, along with their benefits for gut health. Recently with the identification of new probiotic strains specifically intended for oral health applications, the development of probiotic foods for oral health benefits has garnered interest, with a renewed focus on identifying new food formats for delivering probiotics. The development of novel oral probiotic foods is highly complex, as the composition of a food matrix dictates: (1) bacterial viability during production and shelf life and (2) how bacteria partition with components within a food matrix and subsequently adhere to oral cavity surfaces. At present, virtually no information is available on oral probiotic strains such as Streptococcus salivarius; specifically, how orally-derived strains survive under different food parameters. Furthermore, limited information exists on the partition behavior of probiotics with food components, governed by physico-chemical interactions and adhesion phenomena. This review aspires to examine this framework by providing a foundation with existing literature related to the common probiotic genera, in order to inform and drive future attempts of designing new oral probiotic food formats. 相似文献

Bos indicus crossbred cattle (n=79) were fed vitamin D(3) (0 or 3 million IU/hd/d) for 5d. Afterwards, half of each group was slaughtered immediately, while half was fed, without supplementation, for 7d before processing. Serum calcium concentration was increased (P<0.05) in cattle after supplement removal, but not immediately following supplementation. This also was observed in the M. longissimus lumborum and M. triceps brachii, but not in the M. semitendinosus. Liver biopsy vitamin D(3) concentrations were higher (P<0.05) in supplemented cattle immediately following supplementation, but were not different from controls after supplement removal. Vitamin D(3) did not affect tenderness at supplement removal day 0, but increased the tenderness of the M. longissimus lumborum and M. semitendinosus at supplement removal day 7. Vitamin D(3) supplementation improves muscle tenderness and may be more effective when supplementation is ceased 7d before slaughter, with minimum food safety concerns. 相似文献

This study determined nickel (Ni) bioaccessibility in weathered smelter-contaminated soils, separately for particle-sized fractions using two in vitro methods: simulated gastrointestinal digestion (PBET) and PBET followed by absorption by Caco-2 cells. Relative bioavailability of Ni in soils was determined in vivo using rats, validating in vitro estimates; a mineralogical basis of variation in bioavailability/bioaccessibility among soils was explored. In vitro assays identified the same difference in bioaccessibility for Ni among particle size fractions. PBET estimates were more precise, thus likely to be more useful in discerning differences among soils. In vivo bioavailability for Ni was below limit of detection for the small soil particles, and 31% and 56% for the larger particles. The relative bioavailability calculated from this work suggests that risk from ingesting Ni-contaminated soils could be overestimated by between 2- and 50-fold if the estimates of exposure are not adjusted for the lower bioavailability of weathered Ni originating from smelter emissions. The overestimation that would occur by using total Ni is greatest for the particle size that is most likely to adhere to the hands of children, demonstrating the importance of particle-size separation of soils for bioavailability determination and risk assessment. 相似文献

Alternative brominated flame-retardants (BFRs), 2-ethylhexyl 2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (TBB), 2-ethylhexyl 2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate (TBPH), 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), are now being detected in the environment. However, contaminant bioavailability is influenced by the organisms' ecology (i.e., route of uptake) and in situ environmental factors. We observed that the filter-feeding bivalve (Corbicula fluminea) and grazing gastropod (Elimia proxima), collected downstream from a textile manufacturing outfall, exhibited TBB, TBPH, and BTBPE concentrations from 152 to 2230 ng g(-1) lipid weight (lw). These species also contained additional BFRs. Maximum levels of total hexabromocyclododecane diastereomers (∑HBCDs) in these species were 363,000 and 151,000 ng g(-1) lw, and those of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (∑PBDEs) were 64,900 and 47,200 ng g(-1) lw, respectively. These concentrations are among the highest reported to date worldwide. While BDE-209 was once thought to be nonbioavailable and resistant to degradation, it was the dominant BFR present and likely debromination products were detected. Contributions of α- and β-HBCD were higher in tissues than sediments, consistent with γ-HBCD bioisomerization. Mollusk bioaccumulation factors were similar between HBCD and PBDEs with 4 to 6 bromines, but factors for TBB, TBPH, and BTBPE were lower. We collected urban soil samples impacted by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from a sorbent-based remediation field trial to address concerns about unwanted side-effects of 2% powdered (PAC) or granular (GAC) activated carbon amendment on soil microbiology and pollutant biodegradation. After three years, total microbial cell counts and respiration rates were highest in the GAC amended soil. The predominant bacterial community structure derived from denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) shifted more strongly with time than in response to AC amendment. DGGE band sequencing revealed the presence of taxa with closest affiliations either to known PAH degraders, e.g. Rhodococcus jostii RHA-1, or taxa known to harbor PAH degraders, e.g. Rhodococcus erythropolis, in all soils. Quantification by real-time polymerase chain reaction yielded similar dioxygenases gene copy numbers in unamended, PAC-, or GAC-amended soil. PAH availability assessments in batch tests showed the greatest difference of 75% with and without biocide addition for unamended soil, while the lowest PAH availability overall was measured in PAC-amended, live soil. We conclude that AC had no detrimental effects on soil microbiology, AC-amended soils retained the potential to biodegrade PAHs, but the removal of available pollutants by biodegradation was most notable in unamended soil. 相似文献

Surface tension is one of the most important rheological parameters of nanoliquids. It influences the thermophysical and mass transfer properties of nanostructures. Accurate estimation of the surface tension from operating variables is critical for determining optimal production processes. However, the challenges of producing nanoparticles and measuring their properties introduce experimental errors in the data used for mathematical modelling. Crisp regression approaches provide adequate representation of the data, but they do not provide information about the experimental uncertainty. In this study, a fuzzy-hybrid approach is proposed for mathematical modelling of surface tension of carboxymethyl cellulose/chitosan-α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. Then, the proposed model is compared with a crisp model from a previous study. Error analysis is conducted to validate the constructed fuzzy model. It is observed that the fuzzy-hybrid modelling approach has yielded significantly lower error values (a 60%–90% improvement in all error metrics on average), and thus, it is superior to the crisp approach. This study contributes to the subject of modelling rheological properties. It is shown that the fuzzy-hybrid approach has impressive potential to be utilized for modelling the rheological properties of nanostructures. 相似文献

We report significant speed-up for seismic migration running in parallel on networkconnected IBM RISC/6000 workstations, A sustained performance of 15 MFLOP is obtained on a single-entry-level model 320, and speed-ups as high as 5 are obtained for six workstations connected by Ethernet or token ring. Our parallel software uses remote procedure calls provided by NCS (Network Computing System). We have run over a dozen workstations in parallel, but speed-ups become limited by network data rate. Fiber-optic communication should allow much greater speed-ups, and we describe our preliminary results with the fiberoptic serial link adapter of the RISC/6000. We also present a simple theoretical model that agrees well with our measurements and allows speed-up to be predicted from a knowledge of the ratio of computation to communication, which can be determined empirically before the program is parallellzed. We conclude with a brief discussion of alternative software approaches and programming models for network-connected parallel systems. In particular, our program was recently ported to PVM and Linda, and preliminary measurements yield speed-ups very close to those described here. 相似文献
