Novel high performance semicrystalline polyimides, based on controlled molecular weight phthalic anhydride (PA) endcapped 1,4-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene (TPEQ diamine) and oxydiphthalic dianhydride (ODPA), were synthesized. They exhibited excellent thermal stability in nitrogen and air atmospheres as determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The glass transition temperatures (Tg) for these polymers ranged from 225°C for the 10,000 Mn (10K) polymer, to 238°C for the 30,000 (30K) Mn material. The observed melting temperatures for all the polymers were ∼420°C. The crystallization behavior of these polymers showed a strong molecular weight dependence, as illustrated by the observation that the 10K and 12.5K polymers crystallized with relative ease, whereas the 15K, 20K, and 30K polymers showed little or no ability to undergo thermal recrystallization. The thermal stability of these polymers above Tm was investigated by studying the effect of time and temperature in the melt on the cold crystallization and melting of these polymers. Increased time and temperature in the melt resulted in lower crystallinity because of melt state degradation, such as crosslinking and branching, as evidenced by an increase in melt viscosity, which was more prominent for the higher molecular weight polymers.  相似文献

Neurons are especially susceptible to oxidative damage, which is increasingly implicated in neurodegenerative disease. Certain N‐acylethanolamines (NAEs) have been shown to protect neurons from oxidative stress. Since glaucoma may be considered a neurodegenerative disorder and the survival of retinal neurons could also be influenced by N‐acylethanolamines, our goal was to quantify changes in certain N‐acylethanolamine species and their oxylipin derivatives in the retina of a mouse model for glaucoma. We also sought to identify relationships between these and parameters of glaucoma disease development, specifically intraocular pressure, visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity. Five N‐acylethanolamine species and three NAE oxylipin derivatives were quantified in retina from young and aged DBA/2Crl mice. N‐Acylethanolamines and NAE‐oxylipins in retinal extracts were quantified against deuterated standards by isotope dilution gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Levels (nmol/g dry weight) of N‐arachidonoylethanolamine (anandamide; NAE 20:4) were significantly (p = 0.008) decreased in aged (2.875 ± 0.6702) compared to young animals (5.175 ± 0.971). Conversely, the anandamide oxylipin, 15(S)‐HETE ethanolamide (15(S)‐HETE EA), was significantly (p = 0.042) increased in aged (0.063 ± 0.009) compared to young animals (0.039 ± 0.011). Enzymatic depletion of the anandamide pool by 15‐lipoxygenase and consequent accumulation of 15(S)‐HETE ethanolamine may contribute to decreased visual function in glaucomatous mice. Since N‐acylethanolamines effectively attenuate glaucoma pathogenesis and associated visual impairment, our data provides additional rationale and novel targets for glaucoma therapies.  相似文献

We present formal definitions of anonymity properties for voting protocols using the process algebra CSP. We analyse a number of anonymity definitions, and give formal definitions for strong and weak anonymity, highlighting the difference between these definitions. We show that the strong anonymity definition is too strong for practical purposes; the weak anonymity definition, however, turns out to be ideal for analysing voting systems. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the formal definitions: a conventional voting system, and Prêt à Voter, a paper-based, voter-verifiable scheme. In each case, we give a CSP model of the system, and analyse it against our anonymity definitions by specification checks using the Failures-Divergences Refinement (FDR2) model checker. We give a detailed discussion on the results from the analysis, emphasizing the assumptions that we made in our model as well as the challenges in modelling electronic voting systems using CSP.  相似文献

There is much concern regarding the genesis of acidic leachate by mine tailings and its potential impact on local water systems. Genesis of the leachate and its subsequent escape into the surrounding watershed is controlled by the primary distribution of facies within the tailings pond. Leachate generation and percolation is enhanced in high-sulphide coarse-grained sands, while percolation is restricted in fine-grained clays formed from bentonitic slimes. The Kidd Copper deposit, located on the South Range of the Sudbury Basin, was a typical offset dike nickel deposit, where mining took place between 1970 and 1990. Using a sequence of temporally separate aerial photographs dating from 1945 to 2002, it is possible to document the initial development of the mine, its closure and the subsequent degradation of the mine tailings waste that was produced during mining activity. Since the mine's closure, the resulting tailings deposit has progressively oxidized, generating acid-rich leachate. Leachate can escape from the tailings via surface run-off and subsurface flow. The spatial distribution of possible flow pathways was mapped using a combination of sub-centimetre-resolution real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS and individual, high-resolution, oriented photographs of subsurface pits. Lithologic mapping information of the Kidd Copper tailings deposit can provide an insight into the distribution of local aquifers and aquitards. Subsurface lithologic mapping was achieved using a combination of sub-centimetre-resolution RTK GPS and individual, high-resolution, oriented photographs of subsurface pits. The photograph of each pit provides lithologic information of a specific point in the tailings deposit, while the high-resolution GPS locates the individual photographs in three-dimensional (3D) geographic space. Combining these data allows us to identify continuous lithologic surfaces between pits, leading to the construction of a 3D model of the deposition of the tailings pond. Grain size and textural details extracted from the images of each lithology permit discrimination between aquifers and aquitards. The final geometric model could be used as input for estimating the hydrologic and chemical evolution of the tailings.  相似文献

This study compared ratings of family functioning between female African American suicide attempters (n?=?126) and nonattempters (n &≠?112) (aged 18-64 yrs). Attempters reported poorer family-of-creation (physical and nonphysical partner abuse, family strengths, and marital adjustment) and family-of-origin (physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and emotional neglect) functioning than did controls. In a multivariate logistic regression, only marital discord and childhood sexual abuse were risk factors for suicide attempts. A cumulative risk model was also tested and indicated that the presence of 4 or more of the risk factors increased a woman's likelihood of making a nonfatal suicide attempt more than threefold. This study offers one of the first investigations of the families of suicidal African American women and highlights the importance of focusing on family concerns when working with this population. The authors examined the links between mothers' work qualities and their individual well-being and marital quality, as well as adolescent daughters' and sons' gender-role attitudes, as a function of mothers' provider-role attitudes, in 134 dual-earner families. In home interviews, mothers described their work, provider-role attitudes, family relationships, and mental health; their offspring reported gender-role attitudes. Women's attitudes about breadwinning were coded into main-secondary, coprovider, and ambivalent coprovider groups. Mothers' provider-role attitudes moderated the links between status indicators and mothers' depression, marital conflict, and daughters' gender-role attitudes. For example, depression and marital conflict were negatively related to coprovider mothers' earnings and occupational prestige. The same was not true for main-secondary and ambivalent coprovider mothers. These findings underscore the importance of considering employed women's interpretation of their work roles when exploring work-family links. Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk for adverse outcomes such as substance abuse and criminality, particularly if they develop conduct problems. Little is known about early predictors of the developmental course of conduct problems among children with ADHD, however. Parental psychopathology and parenting were assessed in 108 children who first met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.) criteria for ADHD at 4-7 years old. When demographic variables and baseline ADHD and conduct problems were controlled, maternal depression predicted conduct problems 2-8 years following the initial assessment, whereas positive parenting during the structured parent- child interaction task predicted fewer future conduct problems. These findings suggest that maternal depression is a risk factor, whereas early positive parenting is a protective factor, for the developmental course of conduct problems among children with ADHD. A modification to the maximum likelihood algorithm was developed for classification of forest types in Sweden's part of the CORINE land cover mapping project. The new method, called the “calibrated maximum likelihood classification” involves an automated and iterative adjustment of prior weights until class frequency in the output corresponds to class frequency as calculated from objective (field-inventoried) estimates. This modification compensates for the maximum likelihood algorithm's tendency to over-represent dominant classes and under-represent less frequent ones. National forest inventory plot data measured from a five-year period are used to estimate relative frequency of class occurrence and to derive spectral signatures for each forest class. The classification method was implemented operationally within an automated production system which allowed rapid production of a country-wide forest type map from Landsat TM/ETM+ satellite data. The production system automated the retrieval and updating of forest inventory plots, a plot-to-image matching routine, illumination and haze correction of satellite imagery, and classification into forest classes using the calibrated maximum likelihood classification. This paper describes the details of the method and demonstrates the result of using an iterative adjustment of prior weights versus unadjusted prior weights. It shows that the calibrated maximum likelihood algorithm adjusts for the overclassification of classes that are well represented in the training data as well as for other classes, resulting in an output where class proportions are close to those as expected based on forest inventory data.  相似文献
